Super high quality video! Very well done. I don’t think this is a super fair comparison. You would need to dial in each coffee for best flavour for a 15g dose or something. Fines production, and adjusting pours would adjust the final taste of the cup even apart from how fine you grind. Also the gen 1s can grind finer than what you tested here in the video?

I feel you on the FOMO!!! In this video I was brewing a coffee called Bacchus from my friends Mythical Coffee here in Arizona. It’s a 72 hour fermentation Colombia Caldas from Juan Felipe Aristizábal, flavor notes are chocolate mousse, mango, and strawberry. I don’t get much of the mango from it but definitely the chocolate mousse and strawberry! It’s a really good coffee, most of their coffees are. If you eve have a chance to check them out I recommend them. Also another great Arizona shop is Pair Cupworks. I brew a lot of their coffees and the owner/roaster is a good friend of mine. He actually lets me borrow tons of coffee gear all the time to check out and play with for videos! Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the kind words and support!!! 😊☕️🤘

“Fellow coffee nerds” 😂 Nice play. Good video, nice explanation. I’ve had mine in for about 2weeks now, and I do think they do achieve the need for grinding finer. I did pull some shots with these burrs (in my 64mm espresso grinder) they seem to work well for medium roasts. I haven’t tried this with a light roast, and they may be just in turbo or spro over land.

@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
I didn’t go finer for this test cause I was comparing them based on fellows recommended grind settings. Before I upgraded my burrs I had my Ode with the original burrs set at chirp at setting 1 and that’s where I had it set for over a year! So yes I probably could’ve got the grind sizes a little closer, however I would have gone finer with the Gen 2 burrs as well.

I have had my installed for about a week. My take is... yes. I was on setting 1 (the finest) with the v1.1 burrs for almost every single bag of high quality beens for a V60. Now I'm usually between setting 3 and 4. There is much more sweetness in the cup, but it's also more full bodied - as in, the taste is richer, but more singular. I feel like there is less flavor separation with the v2 burrs, but the tradeoffs are worth it to me.
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
That’s just it! You can’t quite go fine enough with the original or Gen 1 burrs to get a good enough extraction when single cup brewing, unless maybe you’re immersion brewing, but even then a little finer would be better. Burrs that grind finer and offer a more consistent grind particle size expose more of the beans surface area to water for better extraction, so it’s hard to go wrong with any burr set that offers those benefits… but for the money the Gen 2 are a strong contender against other more expensive burrs. When you get into higher performance burrs that have different burr geometry and change certain aspects of the coffee flavor profile then it all becomes subjective to your taste. If you like more clarity and a thinner more tea like body then the SSP MP might be better, if you like better body and don’t mind a little less clarity then these or the Gorilla Gear burrs are really nice. The Gorilla Gears are a bit pricey but with the black diamond coating and pre seasoning they’re a really, really nice burr, I love mine. I’m glad you’re enjoying the G2’s and getting better coffee, that’s what it’s all about! Thanks for commenting and checking out my videos! 😊
@dylanbeschoner
@dylanbeschoner Жыл бұрын
It's simply not true that you can't go fine enough for single cups. I brew single cups every day. 12 to 200 usually. You just have to pulse pour or use higher agitation. This is something that people constantly repeat but it's really overblown unless you insist on doing a Hoffman style brew in a cone shaped brewer
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
@@dylanbeschoner I don't disagree with you, I've brewed some pretty good cups with the Gen 1's. I guess my goal with this video was to help people understand the differences between these two burr sets and what they can expect when doing a standard pour over and dose. A lot of people don't understand or know the pulse pour techniques and are just casual coffee drinkers looking for something that will increase the flavor of their cup without drastically changing their brewing methods or recipes. You can't deny that a better burr that can grinder finer and more uniformly is better 😉

With the original (gen 1) burrs I was always on setting 1, as far as the gen 2 I’m actually finding now I’m between 4-5 for faster flowing brewers like the Orea, and 5-7 for more normal flowing brewers like the Stagg, Kalita, V60 etc. But it also depend on the coffee. Hey man, loved the video. Ive got a question about my Ode though. I just got it the other day and finally got to play around with it. Im astonished at how bad the grind is. Even at 1 or 2 im getting these big flakes of beans mixed with all fines. Does this sound more excessive than what other people have experienced using this? I got it for a hundred bucks off so even if i get the gen 2 burs im still under my original budget. Will it fix the issue?

The Gen 1 burrs are not know for having great particle distribution, that’s why the Gen 2 burrs were such a welcome and anticipated update. I had the thought but it’s not just the power of the motor that matter for espresso, it’s also how fine the burr can grind. In the case of the Gen 2 burrs since they’re designed for filter they don’t go fine enough regardless of the grinder you put them in!

Hello, I installed Gorilla Burrs into the Fellow Ode grinder, which produces fabulous grind size consistency, but find that the size selector switch binds while moving after a grind. Turn on the motor and carefully rotate toward 0 and it frees up. Have you noticed this?
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 7 ай бұрын
Sounds like you there might be some coffee particles getting stuck between the burrs. Make sure all the coffee is ground and you’ve used the knocker to get everything out. I know the Ode will shut off when it doesn’t sense anymore resistance and it thinks there are no beans left, but if there are small particles present that stay in between the burrs that can happen. I recommend turning the grinder back on again for a few seconds and using the knocker again after it stops grinding the first time. This will help get out anything left, this is what I do with mine when I use it. If that doesn’t help there may be something else going on and you may have to take it apart and examine it to see.
@Asphere-Ghart

@@coffeenerdaaron thanks Aaron. I turn the motor on, rotate the dial (motor resists but clears out where no resistance resides). It never happened with original burrs. I’m just reporting it to you. @coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
That’s a tough question man! They all perform so well so I guess it depends on what you want from your coffee. In my experience the Gorillas offer great clarity, good sweetness, and good body. The SSP offer really great clarity, great sweetness, but a thinner body. And the Gen 2 offer a good all around experience of clarity, sweetness, and body. One interesting thing about the Gen 2 is that it seems to be pretty consistent that the brightness gets more intense as the cup cools which is a unique characteristic, so if you like good brightness and/or acidity then the Gen 2 may be the way to go. I think the Gen 2 are hard to beat right now when it comes to performance and taste for the money, but the SSP MP are hard to beat in the clarity department! So at the end of the day it really boils down to what you want out of your coffee, what you want to spend, and what your willing to sacrifice to gain in another area. I personally really like the cups I get with the Gorilla burrs because I like a little more body than the SSP MP provide and the overall balance of the flavor notes and sweetness is fantastic, the downside is they’re more expensive. I hope this helps in some way! 😊
