This little detail is tempting me to maybe get into Kill Team, I haven't played since... Jesus, 40k 4th ed when i was a teenager. But kitbashing some femme Custodes could be super fun.

Don't be knocking Salute. It's a bit of an odd show being so short, but it's the best place to find most of the smaller miniatures companies who make really good, often niche, stuff. Lots of terrain and historicals too. I only went once, about 6 years ago, but I had a great day. Got a couple of games in too, including some homebrew thing that could only be described as "what if mario cart but Minions : the war game", which was a blast. This year was the 51st so they're doing something right.

Just to weigh in on a couple of things: 1:17:00 You can only do so much for these people, and I think a good way to go about it is to point out the logical fallacies in their rhetoric, and highlight the ways in which their behaviour is harmful; that way at least viewers who may be leaning towards those ideologies might catch themselves and stop from falling into the muck. I reckon you're already doing a good job of this, by the by, so keep on keepin' on~ 1:20:11 I forget where I first heard this, but there's a saying that goes "satire only works when you're already in on the joke" and since 40k has its roots in being a satire of fascism and bigotry, it also attracts people for whom that stuff is appealing (not helped by GW toning down the overtly comical nature over the years.) That's how Space Marines (and the wider Imperium) can be so appealing to entrenched military people, despite basically being a indictment of oppressive military powers being wielded wantonly by the state. More to the podcast production: Not sure what you're budgeting for this new endeavour yet in terms of time or money, but more visuals for people watching would be nice, even if it's just setting up a screen capture while y'all are recording so you can pull up stuff live. And this one's maybe a stylistic choice, but if you're willing to put time into editing down a longer recording, I think that'll yield a more concise final product for podcast listeners. It'll also let you guys record a bit more leisurely and structure the discussions a bit easier, since it's decided that you'll be trimming the fat later on. Alternatively, if you're confident just running it off-the-cuff, why not lean into that and just make it a livestream discussion so chat can join in. You can edit it down afterwards if really necessary, and also get some YT Short material from the highlights.

Being led by the hand through changed or new fluff is an American thing. No idea why but it's how GW have to operate if they want to have north America as their primary market. Not just the game but all the stuff around the game too seemed to start moving in that direction around 4th ed. Which is roughly when GW really started to push in north America. Not that that is a bad thing. But it does mean that GW had to gear their 40k output for north American minds instead of western European as part of that push. Things being so old that the truth is lost to time and then mythologised isn't as relatable to the north American schema as it is to Europeans

Don’t get me wrong I’m happy about this change, there should be both sexes represented, this hobby is for everyone. lore wise though I always thought it was about the fact that females have a much larger transplant rejection rate than males IRL, so they’d more often die in the augmentation process and lead to wasted resource for the imperium more often. But that’s data from now, this is the year 40,000, there’s absolutely paths for this to work logistically. Just what I always thought when I’d ask myself why there weren’t any represented. Loved this ep, well said and loved the references from Dembski.

I’ve been collecting, painting, and playing for 30 years. Back then we just called the storyline “fluff” as it was the bit that kinda fleshed out the codex or army book. Lore makes it sound so serious, but it all started to sell models. And it has changed and been rewritten so many times. I like the direction with this bit of fluff. And congratulations on the new podcast, I love it!

Don't worry about the pipeline stuff. Like I spent years with some people who were flirting with the internet right wing for ages and I was always patient with them explaining about bigotry and why people are valid why X isn't pandering etc etc and then yeah found out they had been secretly watching Andrew Tate but didn't want to tell me because they knew I'd be dissapointed in them. So obviously the being civil and patient method doesn't always work either.

I don't really understand what the issue with having Female Custodes or Space Marines even lore wise it make sense why would you not want a bigger pool of bodies to throw at the enemies. Need some female chaos space marines/death guard

Female Custodes are better at Hide and Seek than the 2nd and 11th Legions.

Just glosses over how this is incredibly dumb. I'll admit there isn't a lore reason that would prevent the process working on a female BUT every single person that is fine with this ignores a very glaring omission. The Imperium of Man is incredibly dogmatic and hyper traditional. All of the previous lore says it was an all male faction, so the ham-fisted BS pulled by the twitter account is already enough to sink this ship. But even if that tweet didn't exist and she's supposed to be one of if not the first female custodes then it still fails. Why in the heck would a hyper traditional and heavily dogmatic empire suddenly be like, "y'know what, let's shake things up this week." This is an empire that had deified the emperor and every little thing he did is considered sacred. If the emperor made an all male army to protect him then why would whoever is in charge even think of deviating from that because their default would have been, "the emperor did it this way and he most have done it for a reason so I'll just keep doing what he did."

Yeah, there's a long discussion that can be made about how and why there's such a large circle of 40k fans who are mad about this kinda stuff. It's a much larger social topic of those kind of mindsets being seeded overall, as well as how the 40k setting has changed over the years such as (somewhat) pushing away from it's more blatently satirical roots into a more "dark and realistic" tone. It's also hilarious to see people claiming that "nobody would buy female models" when some 40k fans literally go out of their way to make fem models for everything from Necrons to Marines (and thankfully not all of them are designed for sex appeal.) Not to mention in literally every other medium, mixed genders in a cast of characters is just considered normal, as IMO it should be. Even in the wargaming scene, games like Infinity usually just mix male and female models by default in the same squad from the same box. 40k is really one of the only hobbies I've personally seen seen that doesn't just do it naturally.

Salute was awesome, but I also wish it was a 2-dayer. The club that puts it on have said that they'll never go 2 day, they could go much bigger than the show is now, but they've chosen not to as it is just a gaming club doing it all, with volunteer club members. They feel that 2 days would be more work than they're up for, which is all fine and their choice. Hotel next door was £105 for twin room 2 adults so split between mates it's not too bad.

I've been a fan of your stuff for awhile and I was originally a little worried when I saw the thumbnail. I'm glad I was wrong to be worried. I've seen a lot of vitriol in various online spaces. I'm a woman and I play custodes and this two page story was enough for me to be reinvigorated with experimenting and trying lists from the new codex even if the rules aren't the best right now.

At the end of the day why change it ? 40K was very inclusive and every army practically had females in it apart from space marines and custodies but then on the other side you had sisters of silence and sisters of battle so changing one of the male only army’s to female as well kinda messes with the status quo and isn’t really fair

I was serving in the United States Navy Submarine force in 2003 (only males are allowed to serve on Submarines) & I asked when women were going to be intergraded & was informed, "Women couldn't handle the extreme working conditions demanded of the crew who spend a *CENSORED* amount of time underwater." I don't play Warhammer, but enjoy your content & totally thought about the story of Muxus, Goblin Grandee when you talked about the Lt Goblin bannerholder who was constantly replacing himself to seem lucky/immortal to the head orc. Muxus is the combination of the goblins in the card art. Every morning, they choose one of themselves to be the the Grandee for that day.

It is not your responsibility to make people be better, and more importantly it's really not possible. Coming from a person who got caught in the original gamergate pipeline, the only person who can get someone out of that pipeline is themselves. The best and only thing anyone else can do is listen and show up for them if and when they realize they are on a path they don't want to walk anymore.

Let’s be honest, nobody that knows about this is going to stop buying minis over it. If you say you are, I just don’t believe you.

I like the idea of female custodes, not just because since they're essentially designer superhumans, there isn't really a "reason" that women couldn't also be elevated through bespoke genecraft versus the space marines where something something gene alterations are incompatible with females (Ignoring that Cawl has already canonically upgraded space marine geneseed and could be a lore reason why suddenly there can be female space marines). But the bigger win is, by having female custodes you create a very real, very tangible difference between custodes and space marines other than them being bigger, better and more gold. Bricky's intro really does hammer home that, while the deep lore says otherwise, to a newcomer, spacemarines look like super-soldiers, Grey Knights are (super-soldiers)^2 and Custodes are (super-soldiers)^3. This is a way to point out that while space marines are humans genetically altered SPECIFICALLY for war, custodes are what happens if you take the human genome and mastercraft it per individual, and that process is sex-agnostic.

I am avarage enjoyer of warhammer lore, and I do understand your point. But I disagree with you that media culture should reflect and represent modern age contex. In terms of lord of the rings, it was written in the context of pre ww2 England by a guy who fought in ww1. And it is enjoyable without modern age context and not requiring adaptation to fit modern age. Similarly, for example,I do enjoy Macbeth play , which was written in early 17th century. Without knowing whole cultural context, because I am not british, but still i can relate and love the that play. Therefore if setting is written right, it can be enjoyed without corrections or adaptation for centuries.

Its really sad because some people will get caught up in the "well they're right this wasnt great handling of how the lore was changed they could have done more!" But really what the fuck does it matter? Saying Women have always been in the custodes is a simple way of saying "this shouldnt be a big deal because it isnt because of fucking course they would be custodes" lol i can see how lore heads can get sucked in with the excuse if they dont stop and think for a second.

Loved the discussion, subscribing on itunes. I find it interesting that all these people who want to take politics out of things keep putting their politics into things. The pipeline y'all were talking about is such a real thing, and if you couple that with the algorithm on all these sites use skewing right, it takes an effort to correct. I think you should engage when someone brings that up in play Vince.

I'd typed out a huge essay, then condensed it to 2 points: 1.) Female Custodes are great. Makes sense in lore, and players can include/exclude them in armies as they wish. More players have choices and representation. 2.) The way GW has handled this is poor. Should this have been an issue? Obviously no. But should they have known this would bring out all the chuds obfuscating their sexism with every copium argument under the Sun? Yes.
