Does nobody here realize that physically and biologically, men are built to be able to do more with their muscle. We are designed differently, hence, there are different standards for male and female. While all females should strive for the male PT standards, the standards set for us are equally as challenging. They take into account the biological differences and push us to the same limits that they push the men to. Marines, male or female, are marines. The people on here saying that female marines are less than the men because they can't meet the men PT standards are probably bored civilians who have nothing better to do than to criticize the people who devote their lives to protecting our country so that ignorant people can sit on their asses and harass female marines. Simple as that

True, but as you said, men are better suited for combat in general, so no disrespect meant what so ever, but I think that it should be the males doing the rough shit.

Men are stronger than women but I believe women can do it to maybe not as good as the men but they can do it some of their training is not even similar to the men because the men are stronger in the upper and also if you were a woman they will give you birth control so you get your period

In 1967 i was a young kid in College attending Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, VA. It's a long story but I decided to join the Marine Corps rather than be drafted into the Army. I was in excellent shape. I could run 5 miles without breathing hard. i could do 60 pushups, etc. I figured I could breeze through the physical fitness and academics of OCS. Boy was I wrong. I wasn't prepared for the constant mental and physical stresses the Marine Corps demanded. I learned to dig down deep to where I didn't think I could go any further and did. Running 5 miles in running shoes isn't like running 5 miles in boots and combat gear. Doing 60 push ups while fresh isn't like trying to do 40 when exhausted. My OCS class began with 50 candidates and we graduated with less than 25. And this was at the height of the Vietnam War where the Marine Corps needed every officer possible. OCS was a lot like Boot Camp back then except the criteria for graduating was very different. Not only did we have the same physical fitness and harassment as the enlisted in Boot Camp, but our Drill Instructors (DI) were not encouraged to try to graduate as many as possible. Instead, the primary criteria in addition to making it through the physical and mental harassment was whether or not they wanted us to lead them into combat. If not, you were dropped from the program. If they felt they would follow you in combat, then you graduated as long as you made it through the physical and mental stress as well. The primary emphasis was on our ability to lead under extreme pressure. As an example when I went through OCS, there was an exercise called the Speed March Reaction Course. The idea is that one of the OCS candidates was to lead a 4 man team over a course through the woods and terrain with full combat equipment at a run to an opening where there was a challenge we had to complete within 10 minutes. I remember the first challenge was a large ditch filled with water with a telephone pole on either side. There was 100 feet of rope and five 55 gallon drums. The challenge was to get all 4 members of the team across the ditch without getting wet. We failed. Another member of the team was designated the leader to the next challenge. Every time we failed, our DI was yell how we were disgracing him with the other DI's because we were so inept. We failed every challenge and we felt like total crap for failing and the DI let us know we were total crap. It wasn't until graduation that we were told that no one had ever completed any of the challenges on the Speed March Reaction Course because it was designed to be impossible to succeed. It's purpose was to determine how aggressive each team leader was in trying to complete the impossible. It was a lesson I've never forgotten. No matter what obstacles I faced in the future, I was driven to never give up solving the problems. While I served in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer for 21 years with 3 years in combat, I never felt there was a time where I would have to give up. I was given what I felt were impossible assignments and completed them, two with the highest non-combat awards for superior service. I arrived at OCS, Quantico VA as a naive college kid and graduated as a confident Marine that served me well in Vietnam 1969 as a Marine platoon commander. Marine OCS and Boot Camp today are more difficult than when I went through in 1967 which is the way it should be because combat is more challenging that any training you will ever receive and the more intense the training, the better your chances of survival will be in combat, but no amount of training with being in the wrong place at the wrong time will save you. It's just how war is. Bullets don't care how well trained your are. I'm not a fan of females being in combat units, but Israel has made it work so there is hope that our services will find a way to make it work as well.

My younger brother graduated from basic just four days ago. He was a distinguished graduate as he achieved the high shooter award. Best score out of 340+ new Marines. I can't express the overwhelming pride that overtook me to see him in his newfound confidence and strength. I personally was getting ready to ship off to the Navy about four years ago but family issues persuaded me to drop out before going to basic. However I'm consumed with the thought of following in my younger brother's footsteps and my male cousins into the Semper Fi legacy.

The fact that most of these girls have sacrificed 4 years of their early adult lives to serve our country, no matter the politics of it all, is amazing. We should be more than proud that they’ve endured all of this for 4 years if not more! i personally couldn’t last 5 minutes! Thank you marines (and all military) for the sacrifice you’ve made, the time you have given this country, the life you set aside to do this and the blood sweat and tears the military cost you. Thank you for paying a price you didn’t have to pay. Thank you for the goodbyes you didn’t have to say. I hope that if nothing else, you always feel appreciated. God bless you.

I think the defensive guys in these comments are directing their spite at the female marines literally dying for our freedom rather than the people who direct the Marine Corps. If you have a problem with the quota for women, take it up to them, instead of being butt hurt and attacking female marines. If anything, female sergeants are way stricter than male sergeants. Female marines have to measure up and are expected to surpass their male counterparts in terms discipline and respect. You can say whatever you want, it’s your freedom of speech. Just try not to look like a complete jack off in the comments.

Retired 0369MSgt here (1964-85). I really enjoyed watching these Marine Recruits and their Drill Instructors. Why? Because I remember how it was before anyone of them were born. My point is our Marine Corps has come a damn long way since I trained women Marines at NCO School and OCS at Quantico (1976-77). As a 0369 with 14 years in the Fleet I saw these changes coming, and I encourage most of it. After Nam, I encouraged more Close Combat training. Our 8 hours back then was ok until we hit the sh+t in Nam and it went bayonets, E-Tools, helmets, rocks, etc. We have to fight to survive!! I still carry a 3 inch surprise today. I love the Marine Corps infantry! Our female battle buddies roll with "hard ankles" today in combat. We go out as One, we return as One. No one is left behind. This video shows how that "accordion formation" has to stay closed up. I would challenge any key pad pounders talking bs to get on the "mat" with any of these hard chargers. In 1970, I met a WM with a Vietnam Service ribbon. One of my SSgt on Recruiting had a daughter who rolled with the Seals in Iraq. Her "favorite weapon" was a SAW. Semper Fidelis Marines!

My husband is a former recon Marine, 2000-2007. He said that technically some of the best marksmen and sharpshooters he encountered in the Corps were women. Of course this was on a range and not in combat. Do women possess the fortitude to kill or does our maternal biology prevent us from being effective in combat? My husband argues that even his fellow Marines with wives and kids seemed less willing to jump the gun, hesitated and got themselves hurt or killed because their heads were elsewhere. I think all humans have the fortitude to navigate the rage of war and tap into their most primal instincts, I've seen women who were/are Marine Corps material. I'm sure amongst this bunch there are warriors.

Gender may be neutral? WTF are you talking about? Biological sex is not neutral, men cannot bleed 90 days out of the year & survive, gestate a baby using their body as a resource or, give birth. Pretending like men & women can ever be equal biologically is retarded.

I think that the fitness standard for women was fine. Obviously women aren't built like them, so you make the standards according to their body. But now that women can be in combat roles, I think future females should have to meet the males' standards. And I'm planning on enlisting in the Corps.

What I am curious to know, is given that a typical bergen (or pack you might call it in the USA) weighs about 60lbs then you add to that a rifle and ammunition and you're talking almost a typical females bodyweight in gear alone. More for specialised roles. How does that work exactly? Does anyone have a serious answer? I cant see how anyone could be expected to march long distance, let alone run about in combat with their own bodyweight equivalent on their person, it would be impossible, surely?

the ruck they carry puts the majority of the weight on the back. while it is heavy and females have less upper body strength, their legs can for the most part still carry the weight. every female marine must go through the crucible which includes a 9 mile hike with about 100 pounds of equipment to carry

Although it is true that the strongest female will never be as strong as the strongest male. it does not mean that a female who’s fit and has the motivation, determination, and dedication can’t thrive and go above and beyond her male counterparts, unless every male marine who can pass the basic levels of fitness are automatically superior. Yes I get that the fitness standards are different but any self respecting women should strive to, and exceed the “basic” standards of the male cadets. In the videos I’ve seen of female recruits I am appalled at the lack of motivation of the female recruits and the drill instructors... change this shit

@JesusChrist-tw2sv
@JesusChrist-tw2sv 7 жыл бұрын
Sofiya Bae anyone entering any of the 5 branches of the military will all have to go through meps which does a full physical head to toe and goes over your medical history. almost everybody who is honest about their medical history will need a couple waivers flr past injuries and illnesses which are not difficult to get but more serious injuries or history of psychological problems can take much longer to get waivers for and some branches differ on what is and isn't waiverable (for example self harm is waiverable in the army, navy and marine corps but it is non-waiverable in the air force and coast guard) after meps each branch has their own physical standards for men and women to meet in order to go to boot camp. for the Marines it is a mile and a half run in 12:30 for males or 13:30 for females, 55 crunches and either 3 pull-ups or 45 pushups for males and 1 pull-up or 20 pushups for females. you'd have to speak to a recruiter from each branch to get more details.

I don't think I saw one trainee or one instructor smile in the whole video. Training is meant to be fun as well as hard. The weapon handling seemed good and firing positions fine also the rifle 'hold' and shot release during firing seemed confident. However there seemed to be no competition between recruits in what they did? I don't know but, feel that the whole events were toned down? maybe so, maybe not? I only know that as a male recruit (British Infantry) we went ' Hell for leather' and were pushed to the very ultimate limit, and were certainly better soldiers for it. I enjoyed this video and only wish I was that age again so I could do it all again: definitely! but not as a female of course:)

The training methods of the USMC are just bizarre. How many times a day do recruits robotically shout out 'aye, aye sir!' and 'yes, sir!' ? The UK Royal Marines produce a far superior Marine without the drama and from instructors who don't try to be smartasses. Check out 'Commando on the front line', particularly episode 1.

This amount of "screaming, sorry... instructing" is just fucking unnecessary. I have never understood USMC training methods/rituals. It's like: "Follow orders, follow orders!!!" Well that is all well, if you have a competent CO (backed by good NCO's), meaning: competent leaders are people to be taken serious. But don't you want a soldier thinking for themselves? A certain amount of drill is always important and necessary for a soldier. But the USMC overdoes it hardcore in basic training.

Remember these are going to be lowest of the low enlisted people 'read' bullet catchers. They are supposed to be automatons. The E-5 above become more of a junior leader and get special training where they have already been weaned off being an automaton but an NCO well always be Enlisted no matter how much the E-9 swears he is above the 1st lieutenant. Enlisted are like garbage men, Officers are the brains behind it all. Anyone can pull a trigger and take a bullet, not everyone can structure a training schedule, logistics chain etc.

No doubt you are right, and although I respect Marines and the discipline and corps d'esprit they develop and espouse, I must say that the overbearing screaming in training is ineffectual and has been detrimental for the USMC. Bottom line is that for the most part, U.S ARMY Officers are just more professional and better trained at the USMA; especially when it comes to ground warfare, techniques, training and leadership. The Marines have been known to have incompetent leadership at the top, which was manifest in the Marines slow advance to Baghdad in the Iraq War, and their lack of proper protocol, which unnecessarily reignited conflict in Fallujah, which then required ARMY Infantry units coming back in to correct the folly incurred. I'm not going to blame the average fighting Marine, but there is no compensation to be had for weak or incompetent leadership.
