I’m 41. I can still remember my DI’s names. Ssgt Walker , Sgt Harrison and Cpl Rodriguez. I was 17 when I joined. These men made an everlasting impression on my life, and I thank them for it. I’ll pass there teachings to my son.

Going through Parris Island in 1969 was the most transformative experience of my life. I was the platoon guide and was very proud to have made PFC at graduation. It may sound like a cliché but Staff Sargent Flood made a boy into a man and I have been forever grateful.

I miss running with my platoon. Now I run alone and it's boring.

I'm ex Navy from a Search and Rescue squadron so I spent a lot of time with the Marines during my cruises on LHA Helicopter Carriers. I always give Marines a hard time, but that's the standard relationship between the Marines and Navy. Regardless of that I have nothing but respect for anyone who goes through what they go through to become a Marine. You are the top tier, and nobody can ever take that away from you. All Marines earn the right to have that confidence in themselves, and the knowledge of knowing they went through hell to earn the title of Marine. Nothing but respect guys, our country is always safer because of you.

My nephew went to Parris Island for his training eight years ago. This past week he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sargeant (E-6).

My dad served Vietnam and retired as E-6 Staff Sargent. My Uncle Retired from Vietnam and Deasert Storm has E-8 Master Sargent. My Cousin was in the Air Force still alive and he wore his father boats to war. My Great Aunt Rachel Served world War 2. My Grandfather served. I was married in the army twice. 2 of my X- brother inlaw were in the Marines. Still alive. I have a strong military back ground and I am proud.

First off I am a Marine, and watching this like puts me in like a trance. I don't know what it is, well yea I do know what is it but it's a feeling not spoken. Something other Marine's I hope can relate with. I long to be in the pits with rounds snapping over my head and the smell of the hot parade deck. Standing in line at the chow hall, Senior drill instructor time. Some things you can and never will relive and you only have the moment. But the memories of those moments can be so pride inspiring and emotional. God damn Semper Fidelis my brothers. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Big thing to remember is that the vast majority of Drill Instructors really do care. I was in the Army, not Marines, but I still remember running into one of my Drill Sergeants seven years later on the line. I'd fast-tracked promotions and was a Staff Sergeant by then. I remember he saw my rank and just started smiling ear-to-ear, like a proud father who saw his son graduate. We had a chance to catch up for an hour or so before our convoys had to roll (we ran into each other at FOB Hammer). He grabbed a quick picture to share with my other Drill Sergeants and within a week I'd been emailed by bother of them wanting to congratulate me and catch up on my career. Not all Drills are like this, but a lot of them are. As a former NCO, I get it. When I look at my two guys that have stayed in the military and are now well past where I was in rank (one is now a SFC and the other a MSG), I feel so much pride. Not in myself so much, but in them and everything they've done in the Army. I remember them as scared privates, newly arrived to their first unit and fresh out of Basic. Now they are senior NCO's, confidently running a platoon and the operations section for a cavalry squadron. It's as close to being a father as you can get without actually having a kid.

As a non military man, I have to say I've seen DI's in a whole different light. Most of you get emotionally attached to your recruits and due to that you take a HEART INTEREST not just a "it's my job" interest in making them the best they can be. I don't like the whole idea of stressing that you are making "killing machines" which I've heard frequently. The part of an American soldier that makes him/her stand out is not that they are a killing machine. But that they are SOLDIERS. Living, breathing, feeling human beings that choose to do what can be the worst thing in the world to protect their brothers and their countrymen. I don't know what it is. I've never had an inclination to be a soldier (in man's army anyway) but it's like somebody has been cutting onions when I think about our soldiers. I got a heart for you guys. I love you guys. I'm tearing as I'm typing. Damn it. To the DI's that care about their recruits and aren't just sadistic bastards who couldn't care less and just get their rocks off being mean; which there have been in the past and I hope ONLY the past; thank you. Thank you. From my heart. Yeah you got a job to do but I see your heart.

So much respect for these men and women and the transformation they've gone through. Thank you to everyone that's ever served, is serving, and our future military personnel. Your sacrifices will forever be honored.

When my father joined in '69, he said he HATED having to run before he went in. By the end of basic, he said that even though him and his team had the option to ride in vehicles to get somewhere, they CHOSE to run instead. The Corps makes men out of kids.

I spent a 24 hour duty with that Sgt Morales, now GySgt Morales. Really solid, commanding, yet hilarious and chill staff NCO. I just randomly stumbled on this video and that hoarse, hispanic-accent popped right out. Told me all the stories of his time in the drill field and also on deployment. Guy is super motivated, calls marines "warfighter" and "killer", but pulls it off. Solid marine.

Definitely changed since i was there. When you moved to slow shit went flying.

It was so nice to see my oldest son graduate from our Country's Basic Training a week and 1/2 ago. He was so proud of his accomplishments and I was even prouder that he followed in my footsteps and went into a life with the Military. It is such an amazing feeling to mold a young soldier and see them progress and excel in their careers.

I'm 45 now, married with two young sons. I wish I could say "if I knew then what I know now I would have joined the service" but then I likely wouldn't have met my wife and had my two boys. But you get where I'm going. That being said my sons are 17 months and 10 years. I would be incredibly proud of them if they chose a life in the service. Thank you to all that have served and that will serve. I love my country and I get emotional watching these videos, especially the graduation day parts. I am extremely proud of these people. Well done folks....well done! Now a quick question, the one DI mentions age ranges from 17 to 35. What is the oldest recruit that actually made it? I know by 35 I was way out of shape, hell now at 45 I would be dead the first hour. LOL.

That was my Senior DI SSGT Bragg. When i was in Quebec Co 3rd Batallion PLT3052 we were the first of Qeubec Co for Afghanistan war.. Quebec Co was not used since Vietnam War until we came in and it was brought back in 2008

Best choice one of my nephews ever made; go to a juvie school, or get in shape and do early enlistment at 17. Grandpa got him a personal trainer, a Marine veteran, and the deal was he shows every morning, on time, leaves his attitude that got him into trouble on the shelf, and gives it his all. (Late or bad attitude even once, Grandpa calls the court and he goes to juvie.) He made it every day, joined Marines on a waiver, turned 18 a week after graduation. Did two tours in Iraq, got business degree, owns five gyms with his wife, has six kids who won’t be falling into their Dad’s mistakes. (And if any do, it’ll be nipped in the bud immediately!)

Joined the Marine Corps 19 years ago. Senior was SSgt Bryant, kill hats were Sgt. Longoria, Sgt Leon, and Sgt Flores. Ran into both Leon and Flores in Camp Fallujah, they were stoked I had become an 0321. I was surprised they remembered me, that was almost 2 years after I graduated boot camp. Even talked to my recruiter in Fallujah, after he went back to the fleet, was cool to have a normal conversation with all of those guys.

I had pneumonia on swim qual day. It was hard as hell to complete, but I did it. Followed up with a 103.2 temp and trip to the ER with two full IV bags. Now at 37, I sneeze and it’s 3 days of bed rest.

I went to Parris Island in October ,1966. Back then we were beaten and it was always back at the barracks so civilians couldn't witness this. Training was very tough. Went to Vietnamin April 1967, got 2 purple hearts and served at Hoi an, Quang Tri Province, con thien , Hue city during TET., Operation Pegasus with the 1st battalion, 1st marines. Boot camp prepared us for combat. Compared to real combat, boot camp was not so bad. The tough bootcamp training is the reason I survived 13 months in Vietnam. Once a Marine always a Marine
