In this short video the sheer beauty of vowel sounds have been made visible on the CymaScope, demonstrating that when we speak or sing we bathe all those around us in such beauty. CymaScope team member, Vera Gadman, sings vowel sounds, revealing some extraordinarily complex, symmetrical forms. In some areas of the video notice that geometry is unable to develop; this is due to a slight overdrive of the water during those moments. The CymaScope's visualising cell requires sonic energy within narrow limits and when exceeded, lack of coherency results in the imagery. Recent techniques have allowed us to capture the geometry of complete words, opening the way for more advanced phonology studies in future. Look out for postings on these more advanced experiments in the next few weeks.
