I made the mistake of painting all of my fences ( with the same paint you are going to use). I'm a time served decorator so give them the full and proper treatment, but despite that, they still need re-painting every couple of years! I would suggest just leaving them to age naturally, and save yourself a lot of time and money!

With the world's ecomony as it is, maybe you could try garden and house projects that come be done on a budget. My wife and I bought a house last year and we need to do a lot of yard work and some house work. Lol but we also need gutters which will be pricey, so we wanna get as much done as we can afford.

Another excellent video Stuart. After my fence posts rotted through one by one over the years I have now switched to concrete posts & "hit & miss" fencing which allows high winds to pass through the fence instead of catching it like a sail. I have also used a relatively cheap Ferm electric spray gun to paint fence panels. Far quicker than using a brush. I did find that the spray gun drippled a bit so don't use it anywhere near paving or anything else you don't want stained. I laid my fence panels flat on the grass in the back garden to paint them before I put them up. There was some brown overspray on the grass but that disappeared after I cut the grass a week or so later. I too have loads of jobs to do in our garden this year so looking forward to see what you.

Regarding using a sprayer to apply finish to a fence, I've had good luck using an HVLP (high volume, low pressure) sprayer. I've even applied a sealer to both my deck & fence that the manufacturer recommends not applying with a sprayer. (The reason the manufacturer makes this recommendation is that the product needs to be worked in to the pores of the wood with a brush.) I found that if I applied a fairly heavy coat with the sprayer then back brushed it with a wide brush the product adhered well. In effect, I simply used the sprayer to get the product on the surfaces and used the brush to work it into the wood without having to continuously dip the brush. It sure made the job a lot quicker!

I always leave any new wood in the garden untreated for a few months so it can properly dry out, any excess preservative can wash off (which can stain lighter coloured paints) and it can weather a bit too so the treatment will soak in better. I did some fencing work in my garden back in Autumn last year and will treat it during a warm dry spell this Spring/Summer...

I have tried those garden paint sprayers that you pump up by hand to pressurise them, load of rubbish. Tried the gravity fed spray gun that came with my small compressor, massive difference and made spraying a garden bench or 2 really easy. As others have said, watch out for over spray !

I used a wagoner sprayer a few years ago when I did my fences. I did all 3 sides of my garden in about 3 hours. Must be 70 linear meters of 6ft fence. The sprayer paid for its self that day. Was about £80 from toolstation. No special paint or thinning required. Just some cardboard masking and a calm day.

Just finished this similar job yesterday. (On my fence, not yours🤣) not the post mine are concrete. I made a spacer from offcuts as well, such an easy way to get aligned. I have spayed fencing before and you will meed a brush just to get rid of runs if you get them and tidy up edges. (Keep the air pumped in if using the vacuume type, unless yours is electric/air) a little tip, Cover things you dont want to mark, just in case of overspray. 👍👍

As usual I love these videos and have learned a great deal from you, Stuart, thank you. Fence repair is just a bit vital and I had to do it myself for the first time last year. I picked up such a lot from this video and have a question. You mentioned the distance between the posts before you could work out how to make the 107mm jig. I bet my post distances are different to yours and for an experiment I tried to work out how I would make the same kind of jig but couldn't quite get my head round it so, at the risk of a bit of flack from the folks out there who do know, how do you work it out? What's the maths? Congratulations on the 100,000 views, well deserved, I'm amazed at how quickly it added up...Brilliant!

Thank you. Simple really, I had 42 boards to put back into a space of 4495mm. So 4495÷42=107. If you are planning a new fence and using say 125mm wide boards, maybe aim for around 25mm overlap leaving 100mm exposed.

What's your thoughts on attaching a new fence to a neighbours existing concrete post, create a new slot with timber slats to accept concrete gravel board and panel, or just go timber posts and gravel boards and maybe step back a foot and dig new hole and allow cross members to run past post your thoughts please. Also I ain't see you use concrete post or boards any reason why?

Please try and have a little wild area in the garden. Like a native flower meadow with native grasses. Wilding parts of gardens for the benefit of insects would benefit them as they are in decline, especially butterflies and native solitary bees. Have a look at wild your garden with Joel Ashton on KZfaq. Wildlife pond would be great in one of the corners in your garden.

I thought you weren't meant to seal the bottom of the post, because if you do water gathers inside it and rots it? The water enters the post at the top and sides, and so must drain out of the bottom. Better to seal the whole post than just the bottom.

Painted a large decking with fence panels during the summer, used it on bone dry timber posts, gates etc. Washed away. I bought a house with around 200m of wooden post fence. I don't really want to replace the odd rotten post with a concrete one - not going to look right!

I do enjoy your many great videos, but when you make a mistake, like at 5.28 in this one, where you attach the gravel board directly to the post without a spacer of the same width as the cant rail above. It would be good if you either highlight this or not show the mistake, or show the correction that you have clearly made by the end. If a competent DIYer like yourself can do this, it would be great if instructional videos presumably aimed at helping the less experienced, did not gloss over the problem. But otherwise, I love your content, and appreciate the time and effort you put in to make it.

Another good video but I'm upset as you have ruined my Fridays! (I'm not talking about my manservant either)
