In this video I'll be making a fence upgrade for a Dewalt DW745 Table saw.
The Dewalt DW745 contractors table saw is a very capable machine, and one of my most used tools in the workshop. My only complaint about it is the length of the fence. I have always wanted more infeed and outfeed, especially when cutting longer lengths of timber and sheet materials. I designed this fence to be removable in just a couple of seconds, and also built a new double pointer that indicates the width of cut both with the original fence, as well as the upgraded one.
You can build this project mostly from scraps and offcuts. I used 18mm MDF as it's what I had on hand, but you could use plywood or melamine with a similar outcome. It measures 1m long, adding 200mm to the front and back of the original fence, and 120mm high, adding 40mm in hight. This will also add more stability to any jigs that need to run along the fence, such as tenon or spline jigs.
I built this one mostly as a prototype to test the idea, so I'll use it for a few months and see if I need to make any changes before I build a final version.

Hi Stephen, It's definitely worth doing. I'm calling this one a prototype for now. I'm going to use it for a few months and see how it performs. You could easily swap out the whole thing for half inch material instead of 1/4 to slim it down a bit, and in a pinch you could just move the 2 locating bolts that the fence sits over so you can still get the full width of cut. I'm glad you liked the video!

Hi Mark, I haven't fully finished the design yet. The biggest change will be the msterials. I used mdf for this one but I'll probably use melamine for the next one, atleast for the face. Maybe a dedicated space for push sticks etc. There's one other bigger change but I haven't worked out if I can do it yet so you'll just have to wait and see on that one.

@carterscustomrods
@carterscustomrods 4 ай бұрын
It most definitely will. The Rack & Pinion flexes under its own weight, so adding 10-15lbs of 3/4" MDF is really gonna cause issues if the fence is not supported throughout it's entire range of movement.

Given the new fence fits over the old fence, have you checked the new fence for alignment and horizontal runout with a dial indicator?
@OldTownFabricationDesign
@OldTownFabricationDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Not with a dial indicator, because I don't have one. I generally use two long straight edges to check my fence alignment. one against the fence and one against the blade, then measure the distance between the two at either end. The long straight edges will compound any error. I checked it this way and its well within tollerence. I'll be making an updated version of this fence soon so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss it.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the upgrade was. You did a good job with the build, I'm just not sure why you modified the original fence. I've got the same saw and don't have any issues with the fence. It's reversible, so I can add a router on the end and use the same fence for it.
@aturboford1
@aturboford1 2 жыл бұрын
It’s much easier to run tenoning jigs and other attachments on an auxiliary fence than the stock dewalt. Plus the added length is great for stabilizing long cuts. The Dewalt stock fence is probably the best contractor fence out there, but it’s still a job site fence.

I am not getting something about this design. The internal MDF boards are slightly taller the fence, correct? So when you connect the top to the fence (the first glue-up), it's slightly raised above the fence. So that tells me that the whole fence must rest on the table itself. But on 03:22, I see that you push the fence to the right, and although it's not supported, it doesn't fall below to the level of the table to the rails. What am I missing. Great design, by the way. I want to try it on my Dewalt. That's why I ask..
@OldTownFabricationDesign
@OldTownFabricationDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does rest on the table and not on the fence itself. It's a tight enough fit that it doesn't drop down when the fence is extended beyond the table. By having the fence sit on the table it makes sure it is exactly 90 degrees to the table.

I was hoping this was going to replace the existing fence, but it is built around the dw745 fence. Still I think this should allow one to make a tenoning jig that can easily slide over the fence. The original dw745 fence will not allow you to build such a jig.
