This is what people dont understand. When you cheat on your significant, remember they couldve too. Theyre not loyal because they're dumb in love with you, or head over heels because that type of attraction wears off after a while...its because they're you're wife/girlfriend/Boyfriend/Husband. And they kept trying to see something in you after it was clearly gone. They respected you. They fought off the temptation for you. So that makes you Selfish and the weakest link good day.

Denzel’s reaction when Viola mentions that she also fantasizes about other men and laying up somewhere with someone else almost as if he’s offended that she entertains such a thought as his wife. It’s so telling and accurate for some people who cheat on their spouses. They too would get offended and absolutely hate the thought of their spouses doing the same thing to them. Hypocrites.

From a woman’s perspective it means she realized that no matter how much she gave or how perfectly she tried to fit his every want and need, he was never going to reciprocate. He was never going to soften to her and fulfill her needs for emotional intimacy and companionship. He wasn’t going to be a real partner. She tried to be grateful to have the basics of food and shelter covered. To at least have someone to walk through life with, but being with a man like that is a helluva lot lonelier than being single. It’s a palpable kind of loneliness and hopelessness that sours into despair and resentment. The soil she tried to plant her hopes and dreams for love and companionship in was barren and rock-hard.

Honestly that part where he chose to misinterpret one sentence of her entire rant and completely miss the point is so realistic. I can't even count how many arguments with my dad went like this. Sometimes I even state things in the beginning (you are a good person, you gave a lot for this family... etc) so he doesn't take sentences the wrong way, but he still does. You can't talk to someone who doesn't want to listen.

It's a tragedy, and both are correct to themselves throughout the movie. The same pride that keeps the family fed and safe is the be same pride at work here. Troy isn't tempering it, which is his flaw. He doesn't understand love, only duty. Viola's character is tragic as well, but more but virtue of her situation than her temperament. Perhaps her tragic flaw is her capacity for hope, that she did not strike out on her own earlier with someone else. Perhaps that would have been better for everyone, perhaps not. They built a life together with what they had and using their strengths. It became tangled and messy and awful, but always a family, incredibly.

When you eliminate the complexities in terms of the experiences of each individual as explained in this scene, you’re left with one simple truth which is the obvious lesson here: humans are imperfect. We break down, we make mistakes we let each other down, despite our best intentions. Troy, a family man who’d given everything for his family. Out on his own at a young age, went to prison, became a changed man, and has made an honest living for his family and has always been there for them. Rose, a woman who’s been there for the family too, providing love and care at all times. The piece that holds the family together. Same time period, 18 solid years. Then one of them folds. Troy sees a nice girl who makes him feels something slightly different and he cheats. He’s not sorry. Could have been Rose as well, wouldn’t make a difference. They’ve both been strong for too long. Lesson 1: People are imperfect, and mistakes are in our nature. Or alternatively, Lesson 2: Monogamy is against human nature. You choose, love.

The subtleties in their acting are staggering. Viola speaks her truth. Denzel stops listening and starts ruminating on her disclosures about wanting to be with other men. You can almost see the light turn on in his mind… “oh, she’s a human being”. Amazing stuff.

*HAHAHA* Mate please, they sacrifice _nothing_ . Where do you think most women would end up if they were 'free' from marriage? female Einsteins? Da Vincis? Elon Musk or Bill Gates? No, they would just end up chasing d**k, getting useless degrees and debt, rampant promiscuity, single motherhood and debt. This delusion that they "sacrificed" their life for some "dream", what dream? Females chase a small number of men, choose poorly, mate poorly, blame men, then expect good men to pick up their trash. *_That_* is reality. Husbands/fathers were doing just fine, females live in _delusion_

That is pretty deep. Very real life scenario. She wanted to live a life of her own, had dreams and hopes, possibly had it all planned out. She wanted to mingle with other men before laying with one for life. But she gave up everything she wanted, her ambitions and goals, her own life just so Troy could better himself and grow into a better person who could improve their situation on all levels. That is true love, but a very painful one..

My mom said she had a hard time watching this movie. Then I realized why.. my Grandfather was very similar to Denzel’s character. Was very common in the 60’s for men to think and believe this way. That just because they work for their family but no love, no affirmations, no teachable moments, just aggression and discipline and even sometimes emotional abuse... that they’re still doing a decent job as a parent. Very twisted. This day in age our society is getting out of that rut and showing men what real, good true fatherhood looks like. For a long time we were praising or even excusing toxic masculinity/parenting-or “providing.”
