Hilarie and I do a little fence building, then it's time to lead those bellyaching cattle to new pasture. I explain a potential alternative grazing system to our usual mob grazing. Then it's time to check on our fly control experiment; I have early results to share!
-We do not offer farm tours or accept visitors
-We do not sell from the farm
-We do not ship our farm's products

I just love how Patty and the other cows groan and talk to you when they want something. I think it's hilarious! I could watch and listen to that all day long and it would never get old. My Grandfather ran a big dairy farm and it was the same with their cows when it came to food. They weren't as vocal as yours though.

Hi Pete! Interesting to hear you may want to experiment with "rotational mowing" in addition to rotational grazing. In the Netherlands this is called "mowing in service of grazing". Meaning that mowing the grass is performed to yield the perfect quality of grass at the right time, so that the cows can graze the best quality of grass at all times... typicaly when a field is grazed several times, quality goes down after some time. This field can become refreshed after mowing. While telling you this, I notice how silly this must sound, because you are probably well aware of this practice... Anyways, common practice here is a ratio of 2 times grazing versus 1 times mowing, this being repeated during the season. This cycle is planned in a schedule for all fields. Grow state and speed of the different fields can be controlled with applience of fertilizer and manure anywhere between february 15th and september 1st...
@glenkoopman7347
@glenkoopman7347 2 жыл бұрын
In New Zealand we call that topping. Mowing pasture that's getting a bit too far gone or too much seed head for grazing mow before or after cows go in. If there's just too much growth and you can't keep up skip a few paddocks and mow them for hay or silage
@henrieassinck
@henrieassinck 2 жыл бұрын
@@glenkoopman7347 Okay! But are you planning the growth of gras also? This is done in Netherlands by applying various amounts of nitrogen fertilizer and slurry. E.g. in early spring, some paddocks are applied more nitrogen, so growth of gras is more rapidly than on paddocks with less nitrogen. Thus creating a variety of growth state over all paddocks, such that cows always have an optimal feed, when they are moved from one paddock to the next.
@glenkoopman7347
@glenkoopman7347 2 жыл бұрын
@@henrieassinck I am in New Zealand we graze everyday of the year and yes fertilizer mowing and grazing all work together to try get optimal quality for cows
@raybornclark8617
@raybornclark8617 2 жыл бұрын
@@glenkoopman7347 do yall have any reservation of haying a field after grazing???? after the cows move thru the fields and leave manure pats in them, how long do you wait in order to not have manure in you hay bales?? i really dont like the idea of having manure in my hay bales....thoughts??? thanks
@henrieassinck
@henrieassinck 2 жыл бұрын
@@raybornclark8617 it depends on what type of machines you use an how you use them. Myself I mow after extensive grazing in some plots. Sometimes after a few weeks allready, depending on the weather. The manure of the cows stays untouched if the mower is set to not cut the grass too short. Then set tedders and rakes in such a way that they do not touch the manure with the teeth... it might take more time to complete the job, but it is doable.

I have been using the fly traps for about 5 years along with sticky paper in our chicken pen. The earlier they are installed really helps late season fly numbers duue to eliminating the breeding population. At least that is my thought process. Have a great day. We are about 1 mounth ahead of you in seasonal fly development in NW Alabama, my numbers are not bad now due to using the traps and sticky paper traps.

Also four days of dry sunny weather, once in early June, another in mid to late July, and again in late September, to get the hay baled. No work on Sunday, of course. But it will cost you. Thanks, Pete! VERY instructional and relevant as we are gonna be helping a farmer friend with his grazing management this summer. One little guy at school is enamored by clocks and his gifted brain is enabling and encouraging him to build and repair clocks. I spent 30 minutes the other day signing yearbooks with one hand while he got my watch calendar straightened out. You never know with these precious ones, but I do know your clock videos are on his summertime agenda. His Dad was SO excited to learn about you and your mechanically oriented videos. His dream? It's amazing how fast the ground dry's out, but then again also how fast it muds up and holds water after a good gully washer. I just mowed the lawn (got gud 1.8 acres to mow around the house. ) and it was dry/hard enough that I didn't sink in with the mower, normally really wet all around here. but we had 1.7 inches last night and there is standing water on my side hill lawn (50deg incline) so I agree with your assessment on how it drys and comes back fast. and I love your grassing fencing of your pastures I think that's reall a great thought out process. kudos Pete! and a big Kudo for Hillary also you both work good together as a team. thanks for sharing.
