The government has decided to fence the India-Myanmar border, announced Home Minister Ami Shah during a recent visit to Guwahati. The border that’s about 1650 km long passes through four Indian states-Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. If a fence were to come up, the free movement regime, which allows people of one side to travel up to 16 km into the other side, would come to an end. States like Mizoram and Nagaland are opposed to the idea, citing ethnic ties between people living across the border areas. On the other hand, Manipur wants a fence to stop ethnic violence that it has seen for over a year now. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains why the issue is so prickly.
