Wish I had a few hundred more thumbs to give this !!!! I always loved Curtis Mayfield -. Thought he was fantastic back in the early 1970’s. Too bad he got injured the way he did…. Always thought Jimi Hendrix was good but a show boat …. But Mayfield - he was the real thing. RIP Curtis …. You only really die when people forget you … obviously musicians everywhere keep him alive !!! 👍🙏

Best episode yet. Aside from the fun Curtis content and performances of the trio at the end, Pete Griffin is the best host I've seen yet in the series. Bring him back.

My friend Craig McMullen, whom I saw last September in Beverly Hills (at a Motown Records alumni event), also played guitar in Curtis Mayfield's band, and I think the reason he fit in so well with the band is because he had a similar, sweet, smooth, beautiful rhythm n harmony sound. It was really more a rhythm/harmony accompaniment sound than a guitar featured sound like in rock music. Also, too, even though the music was very colorful and soulful and funky, the bands that did all the session recordings for all the classic soul and r n b singers were there to support and give room to those legendary vocalists, so it was harmonically subtle in many ways. Which also suits Curtis' beautiful soft tenor voice.

You'd be wrong listen to the entire album of axis bold as love. Little wing, Castles made of sand, wait till tomorrow, then you move on to cry of love and listen to drifting, electric ladyland listen to have you ever been to electric ladyland, first album listen to The wind cries Mary, Hendriz is a student of Curtis's music. Although the first album are you experienced is mostly distorted guitar and pyrotechnics, but axis electric ladyland and cry of love all have many beautiful clean guitar parts. Hendrix's rhythm playing, in my opinion, is far more impressive than his lead work. Like Curtis had a great ability to take pieces of cords and use triads as well as full chords breaking the corded do several parts like a piano player. Curtis Mayfield is awesome and irreplaceable but Jimi is an absolute genius at what he does and I don't think there's ever been even more unique interpretation of Curtis's work then Jimi's. the thing that I always irritates me is people that think they know everything about Hendrix who don't realize Curtis's influence, and the Curtis whodon't hear any of Curtis in Hendrix' music and if that's the case they're just listening to the wrong tracks because while Jimi does it his own way, he pays homage to his idol, by applying his techniques to a totally new approach to playing. I find it a lot of blues purists and soul purists, here's some sloppy performance of purple Haze or foxy lady, and they think that that sums up Hendrix that he was just a fad. that's not true at all and he was in fact one of those once-in-a-generation we were lucky enough to experience

In fact expound upon that point when hendrix's rhythm style is taught, many great players like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson go out of their way to credit hendrix's rhythm style with what he learned from Curtis Mayfield. Hendrix's first gig and professional level was playing with the Isley Brothers, so in addition to Chicago blues, delta blues as well as some Texas blues, what he learned in Greenwich village from Dylan and the hippies and what he learned in London playing with the British blues rock, cats like Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Paul kossoff, The rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, there was already a heavy Albert King, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Howlin Wolf, Elmore James, BB King, Muddy Waters, lightnin Hopkins, T-Bone Walker,Freddie King, of course Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, huddie ledbetter or Leadbelly, elements in his blues style. And of course last night forget guys like Chuck Berry who really showed Hendrix showmanship as did Little Richard. He also love the early rock and roll like Elvis Presley,

ok if you say so. - Hendrix are very much like Mayfield in a lot of ways. His basic "hendrix technique" comes from Mayfield.
