Here is a video showing signal tracing of the Fender Princeton model AA1164. To simplify the process, I marked up a layout diagram with test points (TP). Note: This video is simply tracing the main audio signal, No gains are being measured, The Tremolo & Reverb sections are not tested. Many radio & amp techs use a signal tracer rather than an oscilloscope, since operation is much easier. You do not have to use the Heathkit units I showed. There are many audio generators and signal tracers on the used market to choose from. I like to use this series of Heathkits, because they are powered by 2 internal 9VDC batteries. So, the test gear is fully isolated from AC line and ground. Adds another layer of safety. I hope this information is useful when you are troubleshooting these old tube amps. If you would like a .jpg of the test point diagram, e-mail me. More detailed information will be posted on my Patreon acct. / dlab_electronics

I built those exact pieces of Heathkit test equipment in 1983 when I was still in High School. Those and a Radio Shack clam shell type of analog multimeter were my only pieces of test equipment back then. Also, a homemade transistor tester. A couple years later, I found an old CONAR oscilloscope at a flea market. Limited equipment, but that forced me to get better and make do with what I had. But anyhow, that signal generator and signal tracer absolutely EATS batteries. A couple years ago, I found an unbuilt power supply kit for these. I built it and use it now if I happen to use these two pieces of equipment. Not totally isolated from the mains, but the 120 volts goes directly to a very small step down transformer, so it is still reasonably safe.

I love these simple but methodical breakdowns of tracing a signal through these vintage fender amps. Helps me understand the schematic. My only issue is being color blind hinders or frustrates me to the point where my wife thinks I’m dangerous. Thanks for the upload.

You need to test for DC leakage at each of the test points BEFORE using the signal tracer. I don't think he mentioned this.

Great video. How do you determine the audio signal/test points?

I reference the schematic, then place the TP's in the signal path

Terry - I have an off-video-topic question, though still related. Have you heard of "small punch" and large punch" tubes, and if so, do you know the difference? All I could find online was a seller with each for sale, but no specifics on the differences. Some friends on a forum have asked and we're all pretty much at a loss.

There is little info on the web. I believe they are talking about the diameter of the plate cap

@@d-labelectronics only thing I found was a link to tube world express, and the photos they had showed actual punched holes in the screen - one tube small holes, one tube large(r) holes. Kind of like the difference between washing machine basket holes and the holes on a vegetable sieve.
