Ferdinand Ries - Piano Concerto no 4 in C minor, Op. 115
Christopher Hinterhuber(piano), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Uwe Grodd (conductor)
“Ferdinand Ries was a fine pianist and prolific composer, leaving nearly 180 works, including piano concertos, symphonies, operas, oratorios, chamber music and solo piano pieces.
The fourteen works for piano and orchestra of Ferdinand Ries stand alongside those of Hummel as the most important of their kind from the early decades of the 19th Century.
As one of Beethoven's closest associates, his views on the composer - collated in a book he published with Franz Wegeler in 1838 - are hugely reliable, indeed invaluable.”

I'm greatly enjoying my exploration of the Ries Concerti! I wouldn't have thought how closely they approached the excellence and inspiration of the Beethoven five. And it sounds as if Schumann made good use of this one, having used the phrase introduced at 14:32 to begin his Concerto. My grateful thanks to the artists and all who worked to bring these fine performances to cd's.

Thank you very much! I'm so glad you appreciate the music of Ries, my favorite composer! Unfortunately, I've never listened to his music in a concert hall and I don't understand why this music isn't performed more often.

Ries, the devoted friend and secretary of Beethoven. It is admirable his growth like composer, we can check in this beautiful concert. On 22.35, the oboe "solo", alludes to Beethoven's Creatures of Prometheus.

This is the third piano concerto of Reis that I've heard for the first time. I can only say that not only was he certainly more than a secretary to Beethoven, his piano concertos anticipate Chopin with all the flourishes, arpeggios, cadenzas, unexpected triplets, and particularly sudden changes in modulations. Perhaps I'm an all wet amateur, but traditionally aren't the main themes of the piano concerto announced by the orchestra in the first movement and developed by the piano. But Reis seems to go farther; as if the piano ignores if not fights against and buries these orchestral themes developing new, almost radical, innovations if not new themes. "Fortunately", the orchestra usually returns to the main themes the piece started with so the listener can catch his breath. But it's as if Reis' redesigning the basic structure of the piano concerto. Hell, I hear Moscheles at times. But did Mendelssohn ever hear any of Reis' output? Perhaps not. Otherwise he would probably have had his fatal stroke earlier.

He even looked like Beethoven and people said he even played like Beethoven, tempestuous, with power and vision. He was also one of few who was Beethoven's lifelong friend and seemed to know how to handle Beethoven's quirkiness and eccentricities. Ries never lost touch with Beethoven and had a role in the London publications of many works of Beethoven after the peace of 1815, including the 1822 commission from the Philharmonic Society that resulted in the Choral Symphony. Ries was def. not just a side note in history but an important link between Beethoven and the world.

Brillantissime ce 4 e de Ries ! Là on ne peut plus parler d’élève ni de secrétaire de Beethoven mais d’un maître lui-même authentique que les programmateurs de concerts auraient intérêt à se pencher dessus !

Thank you very much! I consider that the two great composers, Ries and Beethoven, influenced each other. Only those who have not listened to all the music composed by Ries and have not read the book "DÉTAILS BIOGRAPHIQUES sur BEETHOVEN D'APRÈS WEGELER ET RIES" will say that he did not have his own musical personality. (I accept that I can be subjective because Ries is my favorite composer).

Although Ferdinand Ries, piano concertos have a marked Beethoven influence, which is not surprising given their proximity to him, they are nevertheless distinguished by less formal and snippets of less melancholy They present moments of true joy and joviality that you rarely find in Beethoven. His works are of undeniable value and are subtle and admirable in harmony. It should, as I have already mentioned, have a prominent place among composers in the classical romantic period, due to the magnificent works he composed. This fourth concerto has moments of great musical strength, interspersed with heights of subtle and admirable lyricism. Viva the excellent music of Ries. The orchestra, the pianist and the direction are magnificent.

I heard this concerto last night on the radio. Had never heard it -- or of Ferdinand Ries -- until now. How many more great composers - and great compositions - are out there to discover?

É um concerto de piano magistral ! Ferdinand Ries was the best pupil of Beethoven and wrote 9 or 10 Piano concerts. Like a good pupil, he wanted to please the Master, and it is to suppose that however Beethoven was delighted with the work of Ries, but nevertheless He became a competitor of Beethoven, and probably this was the main reason why Beethoven designated Ries as his secretary. Anyway, it is a pitty that these masterpieces came to us so late.

Harmonically Ries is not as groundbreaking as Beethoven, but his music abounds in melodic invention, and the bravura in the piano is Chopinesque
