Christopher Hinterhuber (piano), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Uwe Grodd (conductor)
“The grand opening tutti of the D Major Concerto Pastoral could be by Beethoven; there are even a few brief melodic hints of Beethoven’s “Pastoral” and Ninth symphonies , but as soon as the piano enters, the romantic keyboard style takes over.
Ries includes solo horn passages in both the second and third movements, the first of which functions as a link between the movements. These solos-in reality they are horn calls-employ the type of yodelling motives that are an important element of the pastoral style.
The lovely second movement Andantino is also remarkable for its orchestration: Ries omits the violins and instead employs a seductive, dark-hued combination of solo horn, solo cello, two bassoons, divisi violas, cellos and basses.
Like all Ries’s concerto finales, this movement exhibits an intriguing mix of brilliant virtuoso display, delicate lyricism and gruff, powerful orchestral outbursts.”

Fantastique.. 🎶💓🎶✨

Should be very challenging to be so creative under the protective shadow of a master like Beethoven

The Beethoven influence is remarkable. Even so there are cadence, harmony and constructive structure that substantially differentiates the two composers. Specifically the emotional nature and the formality of musical construction. Ries is not as “classical “ as Beethoven, his musical fluidity is more free. The second movement is of unparalleled beauty and elegance, it takes us to transcendent levels of incredible delight and pleasure. Ries is really a outstanding and amazing composer. His music is magnificent and magic because touches us in the depths of our soul. A composer who achieves this goal is magnificent and deserves our admiration. Viva Ries and his incomparable music. The pianist, the orchestra and the direction have a superb performance.

It seems that all of Ries' Piano Concerti are pure delight! I've heard #s 5 thru 8 so far, and all have been inventive and uplifting. The extended passage beginning at 18:12, an expansion of a horn call in Beethoven's "Pastorale"(?) shows Ries' genius; in fact, the whole Concerto is marvelous.

The maestri Grodd and Hinterhuber deserve praise for championing this composer who deserves so much than just a footnote in a Beethoven biography. His music has all the lyricism and life-affirming spirituality of the early Romantic giants.

Yeah, I'm glad you did it! I have almost all his music and nothing of this music has ever bored me! (I honestly admit that Beethoven's chamber music, for example, sometimes bored me). Unfortunately youtube recently blocked Symphony no.7 in A Minor op.181 (which was not posted on youtube) and the piano concerto in G minor no.9 op.177. But I'm glad you can listen to this music at home.

Remarkable - I have to admit Rie´s kingdom was also subject to HRM the piano, as much as Beethoven. But Beethoven real "imperial" ground is the symphony and there, Ries merely "piétine"- But I´be to be fair - I need to hear to Rie´s piano sonatas and chamber music. A traditional way to get a more common picture of a composer.

Dear Sibarit101, some 11 months ago you wrote:, quote '..... I bought all 8 his piano concertos, all his violin sonatas, a few piano sonatas and a piano quartet etc. ...' unquote. Trough your uploads I became fascinated and very interested in Ries. Pleas, where did you buy or order these recordings?

I'm glad you're interested in Ries' music. I usually buy music online, through the "download" option (the album or only tracks at my choice), especially from PrestoClassical, but there are many other sites that sell by the same method.

cpo (from osnabrück germany) have also a fine amount of ries recordings.. i recommend this label for their wide range of lesser known composers, a lot of world premiere recordings from top orchestras/conductors. Also the records are at a fair price..(usually € 7.99 per CD). this should not be an advertising i just want to share my love for this label. Enjoy
