Just finished re-assembling the engine and tractor after a complete (engine only) stripdown. Replaced pistons, liners, big end and little end bearings, all valves and springs, new clutch plate, clutch release and spigot bearings, new seals to crankshaft and gearbox input shaft.
It would not start to begin with, but after scratching my head for a couple of days realised that I had managed to time the fuel injection pump on the wrong cycle (spill cutoff should be 32 degrees BTDC, on cylinder No:1 compression cycle).

I remember way back in 1960 I was working on a Farm in West Scotland and I was given a TEF-20 for plowing while all other Farm boys had Masseys with 3 cyl DI Perkins engines and they would start at half a turn of the engine and without any starting aids.....the TEF-20 procedure if I remember correctly was first to Press the excess fuel button on the fuel injection pump, then climb on board and pump the Ki-Gas, then heater plug, then decompress the engine, then push in the start button on the side of the Gearbox with your inner right knee and then push the gear lever to engage the start solenoid and once you got enough speed up on the engine through the De-compressor lever and a quick prayer to the Good Lord that it will start....many times the prayer was never answer resulting in a Massey pull starting me and the thing that made me most angry was that on a pull start the engine would fire up straight away...but once she was running she was a great little tractor and did everything on the Farm but plowing was when she was at her happiest and the plow she pulled depending on the soil was a 04 furrow plow.

Comunque se scaldi candeletta,spruzzi King Gas e usi il decompressore Qui in Italia parte benissimo . Indistruttibile Altri trattori anche più recenti sono Ferraccio

Nice sounding engine! That’s great you got it back together :) what year is it? What’s this about a road way going through your woods? I don’t like the sound of that.

@@doctorvox Had a farmer friend many years ago that rebuilt his dads diesel 20 for shows, can't remember much but it always seemed to start well and it had an extra gearbox that made it creep along very slowly.

Nice tractor and well done rebuilding, I just bought a 1959 TEF it has no wiring loom, no dynamo like yours, but it does have an alternator, but as I said not wired, it runs but the engine race's, I am told this is a diaphragm problem in the pump, collecting it Saturday if you have any tips I would love to here from you.Cheers.Jimmy

Thanks Jimmy. The wiring loom is an easy replacement, I did mine too. The K-iGass makes it easy to start, so worth doing if you have it. My governor piston (housing on the end of the pump) was seized solid, but it still used to tickover OK ! Good luck with yours.....

Sorry the year of my tractor is 1950, just took the filter off its filthy with dirt and its horrible looking, probably not been service in a very long time.

Hi There .I recently restored my ferguson tef 20 and there is oil coming out of the exhaust elbow joint when the engine is running .I did not have this problem before the restoration and the tractor starts very easily . The tractor has not been worked for a long time .Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Great job. I want to fit a temperature gauge to mine . Where is your water temperature gauge attached to the engine? Thanks

Thanks, I dont have a temperature gauge! But it should be easy to fit, probably on the thermostat housing? Maybe check the manual for clues.

@Outdoorsman Good evening. I was wondering if you might be able to help... I’ve just rebuilt a TEF engine and come to fire it up this weekend, with no joy.. No attempt to fire at all, even with easy start... just white smoke. I’ve double checked the timing and spill timing and all looks good to me. I was curious of your video as you mentioned timing your engine out of phase. Can you elaborate on this please? Do you mean that the 1/4 inch hole in the flywheel where you lock it for spill timing could mean the engine might be on compression or possibly exhaust stroke? 🤔

Yes Lawrence, try rotating the engine one more revolution then insert the flywheel pin, unless you have the rocker box off and are certain that both valves are closed on Number 1 cylinder. I made up an adaptor for No.1 injector to check that I was on compression stroke, (pressure gauge) but easier if you can see the valves.

Can I ask your advice? I'm trying to get the crankshaft out of my TEF but it won't budge. I was told to suspend the engine block in the air, hanging from the crank, and that the weight of the block would pull itself off the crank. It's been like this for a week but still isn't moving.Can you offer any insight? Thanks

Hi Michael, I answered this on my other video (see above), it can only be held by the gasket 'goo' IF you have removed ALL the bolts, particularly check the one in the centre bearing. Have you got the flywheel off? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNaVqMJ9lbzQk4k.html

@@doctorvox Thanks for the response. Yeah all bolts removed, flywheel removed, it's just stuck fast. What do you mean by "gasket goo"?

@@mikefoxo If you have the engine out and flywheel off and all the 03 main bearing blocks off the 04 big end bearings off the con rods then the Crankshaft will lift out easily, sometimes the Main bearing blocks can be hard to move but gentle taps with a brass hammer will shift them.

@@michaelmacluskie6089 There are no bearing blocks on this engine, it's all one solid piece of iron. The only way the crank can come out is by sliding out the back of the block, where the clutch fits on. I have made a video showing my problem kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z593jaWKmdTTnKc.html

Hello, I'm currently rebuilding an ferguson TEF-20 myself. And i can't seem to figure out how to take the pistons out of the block? It seems that the piston will not go through the engine without taking the piston liners with them? Did you have this problem?

Yes ....! that's the main problem working on this engine, the big end will not pass through the cylinder. You can push it far enough through to remove the piston gudgeon pins. You also need the crankshaft out to refit etc.
