Sweat fermentation (I deleted the first comment I made saying that cause I hadn’t actually looked it up). Suint* is the dried chemicals from the sweat that mixes with the salts in the dirt. It’s the oils that mix with salts, which is how soap is made; oils from fat mixed with salts from lye or potash. Thanks for the video. I hope to get to do this one day.

I currently have a suint bucket going with some teeswater in it. Been a week of rain, so I think I will leave it a few more days. Thanks for sharing!

I’m getting ready to try this myself! Super excited. Did you use the liquid a second time? I heard it will go faster the 2nd time in the old water. Thanks for the video.

Hi Amanda. Awesome, have fun. No I haven't used the water a 2nd time yet, but it's sitting out there ready to go. I'm still working with the fiber that I cleaned in the Suint and I keep thinking about how cool the process was. Happy cleaning fiber! ~Shiree

Yes, you can just keep using the same water repeatedly, it works better each time you use it.

I’m wondering if I have to wash then after the suint method or could I simply rinse? I’m interested in the difference in the feel of the wool without using harsh soap and I’m excited about not heating it. Btw I make kombucha and anyone that home brews beer will love this method because it’s all about good bacteria. Really fun! Thank you!!!!!

Can this be used for llama or alpaca?
@rehashfiber
@rehashfiber 10 ай бұрын
No because it doesn't have the same properties as the suint, which is the natural grease in sheeps wool. I wash llama and alpaca with shampoo in a wash tub. Thanks for watching. ~Shiree

Do we have to wash with a soap or can we simply rinse? I’d like to avoid the scour. I do though understand that the bacteria growth or whatever is happening is just like soap.

I like to spin with fiber as clean as possible so I wash in Unicorn Power Scour after the suint bath. When you take your fleece out of the suint, rinse it, but then you can make your own decission on if you want to stop there or do further cleaning. With a good rinsing I find the yucky smell goes away after the fleece is dry. Good luck. ~Shiree

Watch "Hands - Wool Spinning"... The process they use is fascinating. It's an old documentary about ancient processes and traditions still carried on in Ireland. The women who clean their fleeces do not use soap, and their fleeces look incredible. Not only that, but they actually return oils (using vegetable oil or canola oil) into their fleeces during the carding process.

Can you clean alpaca this way as well please?
@rehashfiber

No, only do this with wool because of the lanolin. Alpaca can be washed with human shampoo. Thanks for watching. ~Shiree

I washed one fleece this way and it worked very well. But I did another one with the same water and the fleece has a bunch of little white worms in it! I think they’re too small for maggots… Anybody else had this happen? I thought the microbes would kill something like worms?

I've never expierences worms. Do you suppose something laid eggs in the fleece prior to washing? Do you want to keep the fleece? Let it dry outside. Then pick through it carefully, and check it's quality. Put it in a plastic bag tied tight and put it in a garage freezer, if you have one, for 24 hours. Then wash in hot water with Unicorn Power Scour and then go from there. Good Luck. ~Shiree

@@rehashfiber not sure if the eggs were laid beforehand but I’ve never found eggs or worms or hatched bugs in my fleeces before and I skirt maybe 60 per year… so I wanna say the fermentation somehow attracted the thing that laid them? When I dried it in the sun the worms disappeared-or I guess shriveled up and died…but the fleece is not as clean as the first I did with the suint method. I’d throw it in the suint again but I’m afraid those worms will eat the wool or something so yeah I guess I’ll have to buckle down and wash it the conventional way :-/ thanks for the advice!!

If the lid is not tight fitting while in the suint container, flies can get in and lay eggs (maggots). If washed off they will die and won't be harmful. It might also help if the wool is totally immersed. I use rocks to hold down the wool under the water.

@@intuitknit you’re totally right it was because the tub I was using had little holes under the handles for some reason, after that I used one of those litter tubs that seal tight and worked like a charm
