This fiber artist shows you how to go from dirty fleece to beautiful yarn using the suint fermentation method of cleaning fleece. Watch her take the filthiest wool and let it ferment in water making its own soap to melt the filth away. She will then take you into her home to show you what to do after the fleece is cleaned and dried outside and turn it into a beautiful skein of yarn.

Wow. Thats a truck load of fleece. I had no idea you worked with so much of it. I'm so glad to learn all the steps you do to get such gorgeous yarn you knit with. And you knit some beautiful items.

I have heard of this cleaning method but I had never seen it before. It was great. Your shed holds a lot of treasures. I felt like getting more fleece... danger Will Robinson.... thank you for sharing.

LOLOL! That is funny. I always feel that way when I watch your videos! I will be picking up more polypay from a local farmer next week if you want some of that action. It is a beautiful fleece and the yarn is soooooo soft. Let me know! You could use the fermentation method on it before the winter comes…it will need to be cleaned that way, I’m sure. When does the heat leave Canada for the year?

That's temptation, mainly because I have not worked with Polypay yet, but I need to put a dent on my fibre stash before I get more. Right now I have 4 spinning projects on the go. But maybe next year I will take on your offer...🙂

I have wanted to try this method for a long time as it’s so much cheaper to ship the wool to the fiber mill plus cheaper since the starting weight does not have all the dirt and lanolin Everything in my head is screaming that it’s going to felt going from hot to cold and that’s with terrifies me lol I generally wash in the lock but it’s very time consuming going to have to try this this summer Thank you for the video very informative, SenkoFarms

You are very welcome. I have never had any fleece felt on me and I have washed around 20 different breeds so far. Going from the cold soak to a scalding hot wash doesn’t even felt them because there is no real agitation and soap. Aside from those conditions not being met, after you start washing, the temperature of the water will remain hot so there is no real temperature change to worry about. Give it a try on a small amount of fleece in the sink. It wouldn’t be suint but washing from a cold soak to a hot wash and hot rinses, you will be able to see that the wool won’t felt as easily as you are thinking it will. 😊 I can’t wait to see your results. It is a whole lot lighter with all that lanolin and dirt removed. Good luck.

I would like to know what temperture the suint got to? I tried this last year and was sucessful with one fleece in the Greenhouse and the 2nd useing the same bath but we don't really have a brilliant climate for heat thats why I used the greenhouse. 3rd fleece really didn't work but by then we had lost the sun. We live in Wales in the UK. Thank you for this video it was very helpful for my suint experiment P

Thanks so much for sharing The Whole Process. I learned a lot, and really love your skein samples - i need to do that! I keep a log on ravelry, but feeling the skein is the best.

That was a great as to process but I am confused as I thought the whole reason for doing the suint method was to remove all the lanolin and that washing with soap was not necessary.

You put the nasty wool in the Garden? What does it do there and where does it go? Deep bedding?
