Aim: To estimate the Fermi energy of a conductor (copper wire).
Apparatus: conductor (copper wire coil), beaker, constant current source, milli ammeter, milli volt meter, thermometer, etc.
Formula: Fermi energy of conductor (Cu),
E_F=1.35 × 〖10〗^(-15) √((ρ A)/L (R/T) ) eV
where, ρ is the density of copper (kg / m3).
A is the area of cross section of copper wire (m2).
R is the resistance of copper wire at temperature T (in K)
L is the length of the copper coil (m)
Procedure:
The circuit connection is made as shown in the circuit diagram using the proper polarities of the milliammeter and voltmeter.
The given metallic coil is immersed in hot water along with the thermometer.
The constant current is passed through the metallic coil & measures the corresponding voltage drop across the coil.
Calculate the resistance of the coil using the formula
Similarly, find the resistance of the metallic coil for different temperature by cooling the water in step of 3 degrees.
A graph of R v/s T is plotted. The slope (AB/BC = (R/T)) is determined from the graph.
The Fermi energy EF of the conductor is calculated using given formula.
