Lowes doesn't carry these anymore but can be found in hardware stores, lumber yard stores, and eBay. All are not Dixon but are still the same thing. I picked one up at my local Ace Hardware today. Last one in the store, for future use of my Uberleben Kraftig 8". Fits easily on the rod and stores without a problem in the ziplock style Uberleben packaging.

Thanks James. I have been looking for a handle option and appreciate you sharing your hack. It looks like a comfortable and stable handle. How well does it hold the rod when you have it extended to a longer, more usable length? It would be a waste to only strike the 2.5-3” that extend from the handle with the rod inside the handle.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 2 жыл бұрын
It's fairly stable. Plus, it preserves the other half of your Ferro rod and the more experienced you get with it the better off you are at using the only bottom couple of inches anyway to start your fire. Thanks for watching and for your question!
@dwaynerobertson383
@dwaynerobertson383 Жыл бұрын
Yes, what James just said! If you regularly use your striker on most of the length of your ferro rod to start fires you are really using up a lot of that magnesium alloy quickly. I admit, is looks really cool to throw a shower of sparks. I've seen ferro rods nubbed to a point that looked like a pencil, because just the edge is being flaked off, and then a good solid strike lights up that wee pile of magnesium flakes. That white hot pile of flakes will light a fire no problem, and the wind doesn't have any say in the matter. Probably get about 10,000 or 20,000 fires off of one of those 6 inch rods, but even still. It's actually a waste to use 5" instead of 2" or 2.5"

thank you! been looking for something easy like this none of the 6+ inch ones have handles.how well does it work when you have the road almost all the way out though'? i don't want to lose all the striking length.,
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 3 жыл бұрын
It works pretty well, although if you extend it all the way out it can feel a little bit loose. If you keep an inch to inch and a half inside the handle, when you tighten the nut it seems to work a little better. Still, plenty of ferro rod for a great shower of sparks. Thank you for watching and for your question!

To me, the best hack is to get an oversized spark wheel build a housing using tub steel or plastic that has a slightly bigger diameter than the rode get a spring and a cap. thread the tubing and find a cap that fits at a hardware store.. stick that ferro rode inside tubing than spring screw on the cap..now you have an oversized lighter striker in the shape of your ferro rode, and it's only requires your tump to strike. Why nobody thought of this is beyond me they do make tiny ones, but why not one for bigger ferro rod. You could drill holes into the tub steel, copper,or whatever to make it lighter or to see how much ferro rode you have left🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
