Colour coding of insulated ferrules can be confusing. Watch this video to understand the difference between the French (Telemecanique), German (Weidmuller) and German (DIN46228) ferrule color codes.
Ferrule sizes are standardised to cable conductor cross-sections from 0.14mm2 through to 50mm2 and beyond. However the colour of the insulated shoulder changes depending upon the ferrule system. This can lead to errors, for example, a red ferrule is 1.00mm2 in the French colour code and 1.5mm2 in the German Weidmuller system.
Download a printable ferrule colour code - useful for the workshop or your ferrule storage box.

It would be interesting to know the underlying rationale behind these colour schemes. I'd have thought they could just repeat the resistor colour code across the range, or use transparent collars with the size(in square millimetres) printed or embossed on them. The latter option would be my preference to avoid colour clashes and ambiguity.

Thanks for mentioning me in your video! 👍 Here in Germany the DIN standard is the most commonly used one. Many years ago every wholesaler had another the system or sometimes more then one. Now a days the DIN system is commonly used and the other systems have to be ordered from central stock or from the manufacturer. But in a nearby city we have a ferrule manufacturer and there all colour codes are available 😀

German DIN Standard is the most used system in the Netherlands. I do however (due to availability) use some French colors (0.75mm2 and 6mm2) if I have no other option. But it's German Din 99% of the time and crimps made.

To complete the information I have given above: I checked several of my Dutch and German suppliers and none seems to support the Weidmuller-system. It's mostly the Din Standard with some Dutch suppliers offering the French standard as a substitute or completion of their Din offering.

@zapl80 2 жыл бұрын
What's a phase color? Our wiring is yellow/green for earth, blue for neutral and brown, black or gray for 3 phase AC if that's what you mean. There's no red for example (at least since the 1970s). And they all come in different sizes so you couldn't use a blue ferrule for neutral unless it's 2.5 mm²

@morkthebuilder9943 > yes.... There used in power boards/MCB fuse boxes/home power supplies etc. The uninsulated type ( no plastic) are great for butt splicing (joining two wires together) or just cleaning up a loose conduct wire end before you put them in the main connection. If you have more than one wire going into one entry up the size & crimp it down, twin types ain't needed often.

So is there a US American Ferrule standard? Any idea if they're actually required in the US, or the UK for that matter? They seem to be used a lot here in the US for industry, but not sure if they are actually required. I have much less experience with home wiring, but I don't think they're used in that environment much.

Knipex do ferrule crimp pliers, I think they are better and easier to use than the ratchets but you might struggle with larger ones. And I don't agree using the sleeved/insulated ferrules in terminal blocks or PCB headers, they tend to bend and crack too easily

6:05 That's actually very doable. If you repeat 3 colours in the same order it would be very simple. The difference between the same coloured diameters is big enough so you won't accidentally use a wrong one. For example, RED 0.14, 0.50, 1.50, 6.00, 25.00 WHITE 0.25, 0.75, 2.50, 10.00, 35.00 BLUE 0.34, 1.00, 4.00, 16.00, 50.00

The "Deutsche Institut für Normung" or new "Deutsche Industrie Norm" give out many norm document but they let press it outside. So do you must/should buy a book for money if do you want have DIN xxxx. Sometimes change the DIN norm or go into an EU-norm. Or the DIN xxxx gone for ever e.g. DIN for steam locomotive boiler.

First the idiot knocked over the box of letters and numbers as he realised my slight annoyance he stepped backwards on to the edge of the ferrule box catapulting all the contents up into the air all over us both. You can tell the csa of a cable without a ferrule by just looking, right? So what difference does the colour of the ferrule make? Why not just consider it a convenience for you at the point of installation so you can easily tell which one to use... Would have even better to use the colours to mark the cable function - all of the sizes in all of the colours. But that horse has already bolted.
@efixx
@efixx 4 жыл бұрын
Most cables have the csa of the cores marked on the insulation jacket. The colour code does not match the function of the cable, In control cabinets you can have multiple voltages and functions -e.g signal cables. Better to use cable markers to identify functions.
