Fertilising Your Bonsai

A short video on fertilising your bonsai using slow-release fertilisers, my personal preferred method for feeding a bonsai collection.
Using a slow-release fertiliser ensures that your trees have a continual supply of nutrients for faster and more vigorous growth and can be considered the backbone of your own feeding regime, over which additional, higher strength liquid feeds can be applied.
I apply a fresh batch of pellets every 6-8 weeks throughout the growing season for the fastest development.
There are a wide number of suitable slow-release fertiliser products on the market, unfortunately Bonsai Master is no longer available, however my personal preference is for a newer, better product known as Oceana fertiliser, available from the Bonsai4me.com/shop to those of you in Europe.

Thanks a lot Harry, you and Peter "sphagnum moss " Chan from Heron have ruined me. I cant drive anywhere now without almost going off the road because I'm hard on the yamadori scouting.

Can you recommend how frequently do you fertilise bonsai trees using liquid fertiliser it's so inconsistent on the internet so much confusion and so much contradiction some say once a week some say every two weeks some say every month in the growing season can you give any advice ?? Thanks

I hear you. The manufacturers of soluble fertilisers will have tested and tested their fertilisers to be able advise the best possible dosage and timing possible for maximum growth/yield. It’s totally at their best interest to be able to do that. So follow their advice. Amateur ‘experts’ won’t have been able to conduct these tests…… However, I would advocate using organic solid fertilisers (at the manufacturers dosage) because its healthier, cleaner and produces more useful growth (short internodes that don’t need to be removed).

nice 👍🏻 i use chemical granuals i just hate how it leaves the white residue so i use biogold but man slow realeasing ferts are expensive

Harry, what are your thoughts on chicken fertilizer pellets, any good? Nice informative video especially Pine needles

Brian Kavanagh chicken pellets work, but (apparently) they aren’t a consistent strength and more importantly, clog up the soil too much, even for deciduous trees. That said, on field-growing trees or healthy/vigorous deciduous trees in large containers they do help.
