Are you using the right setting on your fertilizer spreader? In this video I'll show you an easy process so you can find out for sure by calibrating the fertilizer spreader you are using. It's always best to use a fertilizer like milorganite or something similar where we can make an application and not worry about burning the lawn if we over apply by a little bit. Once you have this process down you should be able to check the settings on the back of the bag you are using and dial in your rate according to your tests with your specific spreader.

Hey Ryan, I always add an extra pound of fert in the hopper. This ensures I have enough to actually spread evenly over a 1000sf. Then I measure the contents left over and adjust my hopper settings from there. Like you, my walking speed is pretty much set.

I bought the Scott's Mini and put out Scott's DiseaseEX for greyspot. I measured out 4lbs (the curative rate per 1000 sq ft) did an edge pass and two straight passes, all gone. I used the curative rate per the bag and it took the entire bag of product to a little over 1200 sq ft. I thought it would have been a little more accurate than that!

What is most important is uniform coverage, and most broadcast spreaders do not throw the material uniformly (less material is delivered per square foot the further away it is thrown). Because of this fact, it is better to use a crosshatch pattern when spreading, which suggests using a lower setting on the spreader than the bag recommends as you will be walking nearly twice as far. You are right ... it is trial and error, but once you lock in a setting for a given material and spreader combo, write it down, and you won't need to measure out this material in the future before applying - just fill-up and go.
@mrscorpio007ify

The last part of your statement was what I like. Shouldn't all bags of Milargornite come with 3 settings for a Scott's spreader. 1 each for light, medium and heavy. And the only thing that you have to measure is how many bags you will need. Just dump it in and walk at a normal pace. All of this calibrating and calculating in mind boggling.

Remember, when you have the left side deflector down, you end up putting down a very high quantity of the material you are spreading (in Ryan's case, Milorganite) in a small strip just to the right of the left wheel. That is because the side deflector does not reduce the amount of material being released by the rotary disk. Rather, the side deflector just directs all of the material that would have been spread to the left of the spreader to just a small strip next to the wheel.

I’m a Ryan Knorr disciple! I bought myself the same Scott’s spreader and put down an application of turf builder. It worked great, where I walked. Now my yard has dark streaks showing the path I walked. Have you ever seen that? Was I walking too slow? It’s been about a week, so would it be too early to put more down and try to fill in the rest of the lawn?
@lancetickner8209
@lancetickner8209 Жыл бұрын
See Tommy Tester's note above (and Ed K. above that). You want to set your spreader to put out the material at 1/2 the rate and do a cross-hatch pattern. Do the outside loop first maybe at 3/4 suggested setting for full coverage (to reduce over-loading material at the deflector edge). Then do the inside the loop area at 1/2 setting going north to south and then east to west. This should help get rid of "streaking" in your lawn.

We are looking at the percentage of nitrogen inside of the bag so that would be out of a total of 100 percent. If you have a 21-0-0 then 21% of that bag is nitrogen and 100/21 would easily give you how many pounds of that product you would need to put down 1 pound of Nitrogen onto the ground

With my logic, the hopper does not know how much lbs you put in. All it knows is what it's calibrated at to throw the appropriate amount. So with the right calibration, walking speed, etc... would you not naturally put down the correct amount of lbs on the ground regardless of how much was in the hopper assuming there was enough to walk the entire lawn? Worst case you have left over product in the hopper that you would re-bag.

Nice video but how do you know where to set a Scott’s edgeguard? Numbers don’t match up to the spreader you were using or a higher end spreader.
