Does a cactus need nutrients and fertilizing? Which type of cactus fertilizer? How do I fertilize my cacti and other succulent plants? When and how often do I fertilize my cactus plant collection? These are all important and very frequently asked questions...so this video will shed light on all of these aspects, and show you in some detail how I go about this very important topic! After all, if you would like to encourage your cacti to bloom, you will need to provide them with a dormancy period in the winter months, AND you will need to feed them the appropriate nutrients at the correct time of the year!!! See which one and when! The main topics and chapters in this video are:
1:34 Hints from their natural habitats
7:14 Three primary elements (N-P-K) of a cactus fertilizer
8:09 Nitrogen (N) and it's benefits
9:16 Phosphorous (P) and it's benefits
10:13 Potassium (K) and it's benefits
10:50 Vital secondary (trace) elements
13:28 How cactus fertilizers differ from others
16:15 The ideal cactus fertilizer
18:01 Solid, liquid or granular?
18:39 Are these fertilizers expensive?
19:31 What if I use an organic-type plant fertilizer?
21:10 What about Epicacti and other succulent plants?
23:33 When and how often do I fertilize my cacti?
28:41 What if I over-feed my cacti?
30:31 Summary and wrap-up
I hope you find this video useful and that it addresses the main questions that you have around fertilizing and feeding cacti and other succulent plants with nutrients.
Cheers,
Joe

This was a VERY useful video for me. Learned a lot and realised I need to maybe find a more appropriate fertiliser. Halfway through I paused and checked the fertilisers I have been using. Because a few cacti channels are using a liquid tomato fertiliser I have done the same. Mine has a NPK of 14.0 : 1.4 : 8.0. and has no trace elements. This seems to high in N and too low in P maybe. The only cacti specific fertiliser I have found so far is a pelletised one and has NPK of 11.9 : 1.8 : 8.0 and has trace elements. Impressed by your watering set from your previous video. The watering and fertiliser frequencies you mentioned was very useful. I suspect that I will need to adapt to my climatic conditions with our very hot summers and cool frosty winters. Joe, thank you so much for sharing. Much appreciated.

Hey Ted, really good and motivating to read that you found the video and infos useful and hopefully helpfull! I totally agree with your comment about having to adjust and 'custom tailor' to your own local climate and growing circumstances - there is no silver bullet solution for watering, fertilizing, etc. Just too many variables! But of course knowing the main parameters that are worth keeping in mind is what I hope to make folks aware of with my video, haha! Yeah, I also agree with you on the tomato fertilizer, would not be my favourite choice for most cacti either, at least in my climate and my mineral substrate. Sending you lot's of cactus greetings for a wonderful rest of the week ahead! Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated! Happy growing!!

Hi joe this is a lot of information to process. Your collection looks soooo healthy I can see they are enjoying the care you're giving them. I have seen some people talk about amonia sulphate and it helps the cacti to grow as well as lower the PH of the water.
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 10 ай бұрын
Aww, thanks so much Marlene, that's very kind of you to say! Glad you like the plants shown! Ammoniasulphate does indeed lower the pH of soil a little, but it is quite rich in Nitrogen (has a NPK of 21:0:0) and in my view not too suitable on it's own for most cacti, for the reasons explained in the video (they will tend to flower less and also start to bloat and become less healthy over time). Hope this info helps. Best wishes and have a wonderful weekend ahead!! 🙏🙌👍😊🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎🌞

@solarwinds- 5 ай бұрын
Great information Joe. Correct me if I'm wrong. Another danger from fertilizing too much is etiolation (stretching). Lack of sunlight is not the only thing that causes etiolation. It can be caused by fertilizing too much or fertilizing in the wrong part of the season. If it is too hot, the fertilizer will cause an explosion of growth but it will be long, stretched out, unhealthy growth. Feed your cacti in early to mid-spring for happy prickles.
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 5 ай бұрын
Yes indeed, that is very true! All the points you are making are excellent ones and spot on! Also, fertilizing in too high concentrations, especially during warm weather can lead to cacti suddenly splitting open...and these open wounds can then easily be infected by fungi, bacteria and viruses. Thanks for watching & commenting and for sharing your experiences! Have a great day and happy growing of course! 🙌👍🙏😊🌵🪴🌵🌿🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️

Thank you for another great and informative video! 👍🏻 I personally use a fertilizer from Seramis at the moment - it's in liquid form - which I hope is quite fitting. It has a 3-4-5 NPK ratio which I hope is ok, because Nitrogen has at least the lowest portion. I fertilize round about every six weeks (so approximately with every 3rd or 4th watering) which I think works quite well. It was very interesting to get to know that the soil in arid areas mainly gets its nitrogen from lightning strikes, thank you for this 'fun fact' 😄 Have a great remainder of the weekend and until next time! :)

Hallo Jacob! Thanks for watching and for your very informative feedback and comments, which i always love reading! Yep, indeed, your fertilizer - and also your frequency - sound perfect! I have not tried the one from Seramis yet, does it have trace elements added too? Will give it a go one day too, as I like changing around my brands every now and then - as i don't think that any single one is "perfect" for all my plants! Hope you have a wonderful Monday afternoon and also rest of the week ahead! Kakteengrüße nach Kassel! 🙏🙏🙌👍🌵🌺🌵🌼💚😎☀️😊

Yes, it indeed has trace elements in it, to be precise B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn. Additionally, it also contains Ethylendiamintetraacetat (EDTA) as a complexing agent. By the way, regarding future videos: As you now already covered very many topics of plant care and also your own greenhouse composition, it may be a great idea to do a kind of video series on the most "prominent" cactus species, I would definitely love to watch videos of that kind. Wishing you a great Monday too! :)

A big source of fertilizer in deserts are bats, birds, mice and spiders. Spiders on smaller plants are a big help, because the carcass of insects is a big source of nutrients. When you have night blooming plants, bats and moths are big pollinators.

In the playlist on Cactus Care 101 you will find a few videos on staging and potting/repotting of cacti, with references to and recipe of my substrate. Try this link e.g.: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d82IZ7Kdl769Zok.html At approx16 :20 in that video I have some details listed for you, regarding ingredients. Hope this helps, best wishes and have a great day, happy growing!!

Thank you Joe, very interesting video! And great t-shirt! I usually buy always the same succulent fertilizer at the supermarket, I checked the ratio after watching you video and it's strange: 4-6-8. I usually fertilize my cacti only once a year because I am afraid they get bloated, as you say in the video. Have a great weekend!

@Vera Vera thank you so much, super that you found the video interesting and also liked the cactus t-shirt, haha! The ratio of your fertilizer is fine! As long as the N is lower than P and K, that's great! And if once a year works for you then that's great! I have an almost 100% mineral substrate, so I need a bit more fertilizer for mine! Thanks so much for watching and you have a wonderful weekend too!! 🙏🙏👍😉🌵🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️

Thanks for a very informative video. I've been feeding my young Trichocereus plants maybe every 2-3 weeks over the growing season and they don't seem to have come to any harm. However most of my desert cacti have received far less, and in a couple of cases don't seem to have grown at all. I've only really had one adult cactus loss, which I now put down to the wrong growth medium. I'm now trying to figure out which ones can stay outside over winter, which ones will come indoors and which ones will go into the basement which is cool and dark.

Thanks, brilliant that you found the video informative, thanks for watching and for your feedback, also with lot's of interesting infos! Yeah, Trichos typically do need and can manage a few "meals" more than many other desert cacti! They can be real fertilizer guzzlers, haha! I actually give a few of my columnar cacti an extra fertilizer dose too, bit only weather permitting. This year the summer here had quite a lot of rain, so I got in less watering opportunities than "normal". Good luck with all your pre-dormancy period activities, always a really busy time of the cactus year!! Best wishes and happy growing!🙌🙏🙏👍🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎☀️😊

@cactusjoe 10 ай бұрын
Hi Slava, thank you very much, super that you liked the video and found it informative! Thanks for watching!! Yes indeed, the relatively high humidity in our climate can be a real problem, especially during the winter months in the greenhouse. I try and keep it rel. low (below 70%) by having an electtric dehumidifier running, but also by keeping my plants and their substrate completely dry during this dormancy period. Another thing that helps is to have at least 1-2 electric fans running, to ensure air movement, circulation and drying. Hope this helps? Kind regards and thank you once again!🙏🙏👍🙌😊🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎

Hey Joe, what causes a Trichocereus to drop her buds. Are they difficult bloomers? Are they fussy to any changes? Seems like that would be a problem for recruitment of the species - predisposed to extinction. May be a good idea for a video!
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 2 ай бұрын
Hey @solarwinds thanks for watching and for your good questions. Sorry to read about your Trichocereus dropping it's buds. Unfortunately that can actually happen with quite a lot of cacti in cultivation, often linked to sudden changes in their immediate environment (temperature, substrate wetness or dryness, etc.) or growing location (brightness, direction towards sunlight, etc.). So this is a phenomenon not just linked to Trichocereus specifically. Wishing you a relaxing Sunday and hope you get plenty of other blooms from your cacti! Kind regards and happy growing!!🙏👍😉🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚😎☀️

Hi Joe. I am a little late seeing your current video. I water every 2 weeks, and I add a fertilizer called Cactus Juice. The manufacturer request a dosage of 5 ml per gallon at every watering. It is 1-7-6 and has a light additive of Calcium. I do not use any water additive for the first and last watering of the season. On the second watering in the spring and next to last in the fall, I also add insecticidal concentrate of Azadirachtin/Pyrethrin at 4 ml per gallon. Why do you not use pH control for your watering. All you would need to do is take a meter reading in the tank that has your water stored in it, add pH down as required and water. After a little practice, I am able to make every gallon be at 5.8 or 5.9 pH. You can pick any range that you want to allow. Send me a note if you need help. This is another very informative video. Thank you again for all your help with understanding this wonderful hobby. By the way, your wife should be proud of her wonderful art work she is letting you use as a backdrop in the video!

❤ hey Joe, this is Pauline I buy plants at Home Depot. I don’t have the luxury of getting plants from big places on Internet but when I get the plants they are so dried out I tried to soak them first and then let them dry and then plant them and I want to do this how should I handle it?
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 6 ай бұрын
Hey Pauline! Thanks for watching and for your comments and great question! By the way, for a very long time I got most of my cacti and other succulent plants from places like Home Depot and similar places too! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! What counts is that people enjoy their plants and treat them well, get them to grow and flower if possible, not where they get them from (as long as they are not taken and poached from their natural habitats of course!!) - I am a firm believer in that. If you get new plants from a shop or supermarket then they will often not be in very suitable soil or substrate, as these are often not well draining and tend to be soggy and wet far too long. Not something that most cacti & succulents like. So before soaking them in their old pot and substrate, you might want to take them out of the original pot, carefully remove the old soil from their roots, then repot them into a well-draining, gritty cactus soil and keep for about a week in the shade, without watering. This allows any injuries on the roots to heal and callus over. Only then start watering a little bit, allow to dry again before repeating and gradually get the plant re-rooted and growing in it's new substrate and pot perhaps. Best to do this in spring or summer, not the winter months. Hope this helps answer your question. Take care and happy growing!

Informative video! I'm wondering if you water your cacti at all from November to March. I live in Canada and afraid to not giving abit of water may shrivel them in size. I've already noticed this in one of my barrel cactus. Your thoughts please. Thanks!
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 8 ай бұрын
Hi Annette, first of all thank you so much for watching and very happy that you found the video informative! Regarding your question, yes indeed I keep my cacti completely dry from November to March, and also at temperatures around 6 to 10C. And indeed, they will almost all show shrivelling and shrinking, but they do that in nature too where they will be able to go without water for very lengthy periods too. As long as they are standing cool, they will be fine! They are "designed" to fill themselves with water and "de-shrivel" again during Spring. Only if you are keeping your cacti in heated rooms during winter, above 15C, will you need to give them a little drink, very occasionally. But that will usually not be a dormancy and so blooms will unlikely develop in the following year. Hope this answers your question! Happy growing!👍🙏🙌😊🌵🪴🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️

@@cactusjoe Thanks for your response. I keep my cactus indoors, so the temps would be over 15 degrees and have grow lights...so are you saying water very infrequently during the fall and winter, or still no water at all? Thx for your invaluable information.
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 8 ай бұрын
@@annettenoga6182 no problem, Annette, happy to help if I can. Yeah, given your cacti are standing warmer than 15C I would say just a very small amount of water every few weeks - hard to say without knowing the exact setup your end, but generally in winter: the cooler and drier the better. If that is not possible then just a small amount of water, very infrequently - and just monitor how the plants are responding. You don't want them to develop root rot, so avoid water logged substrate in the pots. And you also don't want them to continue growing through the winter - perhaps your lights are sufficient, but if not, then the plants run the risk of growing in the insufficent, weak winter lighting, which results in so-called etiolated shapes, i.e. much thinner and light-green-colored towards the top of the plants than at their base. Hope this helps, best wishes!

Hey, thanks for watching, I'm glad you found the infos in the video useful and thanks also for your comments and questions. First of all, well done for saving that cactus of your's from the trash!🏆🏅🎉 It sounds like you have either a Parodia/Notocactus (new/old names for these) or a Golden Barrel Cactus (depending on how far over on my right shoulder, haha)...the latter can indeed grow to pretty large sizes, depending on your climate. In their natural surroundings of Mexico they will grow to 2-3 ft in diameter. Less likely in a greenhouse or on a window sill within a lifetime 😉 If it is a Parodia, then it will remain about the size of the one in my video - you could google, to find out which one of the two yours resembles more👍 In either case, giving it a good feeding 2 to max 3 times a year will be appreciated by the plant! Hope this info helps a bit, take care and happy growing!!🙏😊🌵🪴🌸🌺🌼💚😎☀️👍
