Probably the MOST ASKED QUESTION related to growing cacti and other succulent plants is: WHEN and HOW SHOULD I WATER MY CACTI and SUCCULENTS? In this video, please join me to watch how I personally go about watering MY cactus and succulent plant collection: how I water? when I water? how frequently? and a lot of other useful tips and tricks related to this all-important topic of WATERING CACTI & SUCCULENTS! At the same time, I hope that after watching this video, you will also understand that there is no single "BEST" way of doing this - however, you will better understand the factors that will help YOU to find the BEST way of watering in your own circumstances, for your own collection!
I prefer watering my collection of plants with rain water, at the end of a day and preferably during a warm but not hot weather spell. And I water all my plants from the top (albeit not necessarily onto/into the central growth axis of the more sensitive plants), as this comes closest to a natural rain shower in their habitats! And this method allows me to control the amount of water best, as well as check up on the well-being of all my plants individually!
It is a myth that there is a golden rule about when and how often to water cacti, as there are always several factors and variable involved! The most important factors driving the frequency of watering are: (1) your local climate, (2) the location of the plants (full sunny, half shade, etc.), (3) the type of plants (desert cactus, epiphytic rainforest cactus, etc.), (4) the type of cactus potting substrate/soil (fully mineral and inorganic, fully soil and organic, etc.), (5) the material of your pots (terracota, plastic, glazed ceramic, etc.) and (6) the size of the pots (small, large, shallow, deep)!
The video has the following chapters:
0:44 My water source and some basic tools
4:49 Watering my cacti in the raised rock bed
7:07 What time of the day I prefer to water
11:53 Moving on to the plants in pots
20:06 How often should I water my cacti?
25:39 Granitic rock chips as top dressing
28:23 Hanging baskets & larger planters
31:30 Watering my "other succulents"
33:00 How long it takes & how much water?
Come along and join me for a round of watering in my cactus & succulent collection!
Cheers,
Joe

Brilliant to hear that you both enjoyed watching the video about watering my plants, and also interesting to hear that you too prefer watering at the end of the day. Yeah, that gentle water spray does help with the watering and as you say, also keeps the dust and other particles off the plants. So happy that you enjoyed seeing my plant family, haha! Hope you are having a wonderful week, sending you and Hans very best cactus greetings across to the beautiful Emerald Isle, take care and happy growing!

I really like your pump system and the nozzle you use!! Very cool!! Great system for collecting water!!! It's funny, my wife was asking for a friend " how often should she water her cactus. I said when they dry out. She got mad at me cause I couldn't tell her how many days in-between waterings! Hahaha!! I always use the stick method. I use a thin bamboo skewer to test the soil. Thanks for sharing your system with us Joe!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, have a wonderful week ahead!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌴🌷🍀💐🪴🌻🌿🌹🌳🌸🌾🌱😃👍

Hahaha, Clyde, I love your comment about the "how many days in between waterings?" question, it is indeed a bit of a myth that people can stick to a specific "every x days" schedule! Unless of course the weather is very stable and unchanged for a long period of time, i suppose it could work for that period. I'm glad that you liked the pump system and watering nozzle that I use - I can definitely recommend this type of setup, or similar, as it does save me a fair amount of time! I really like your bamboo skewer stick method to test the soil! Thanks so much for watching, my friend, and sending you very best cactus greetings to Morris Park in the Ozarks, USA!!

Thanks so much, Daz, for watching and for your wonderful comments and feedback as always! Yep, I have exactly the same problem, the water from the tap is very calcareous here too, which is why I collect and use the rain water. When it rains after longer sunny and dry periods, there is also quite a lot of chemical 'junk' collected on the roofs, which is why it is ideally worth waiting 10-15 minutes after the rain has started before collecting the rain water in the tanks - that also keeps the pump and filters cleaner, as there will also be a fair amount of coarser dirt coming off the roof in the first wash-off, haha! Sending you and Edith very best cactus greetings and hope you are both having a wonderful week! Take care and happy growing of course!

Good to see your rainwater set up Joe 😎 We've got a 4,000 litre collection set up here now after nearly running out of rainwater in last year's drought. Our tap water is so calcareous you could mine it from the kettle 😮 Not good for a lot of the cacti. Have a lovely evening my friend 😊😊🌵🌵

Hi Ziggy, thanks a lot for watching and for your interesting comments! Yep, I have the same here too, very hard, calcareous water which is why I am using rain water - or, should I have run out of rain water I will fill the tank with tap water and treat it with some diluted citric acid or similar, but always checking the pH before watering! Your 4000 litre collection tank sounds BRILLIANT to have, much better than mine! Hope you are having a wonderful week, my friend, best wishes take care and happy growing!

Hi Joe! New subscriber! Found your channel through Lyn. These are excellent tips on watering cacti. I live in Southern California, and it’s exceedingly hot here at the moment. I’ve been having to water my cacti roughly every few days, as all my plants live in terra cotta pots. I have most of them potted in a mix of a good cactus and succulent mix I buy locally, and some gritty bonsai soil, to ensure my plants dry out quickly. I tell people the same thing; water when the soil is dry. I have a moisture meter that I use with my indoor plants, and it hasn’t steered me wrong. You have a spectacular collection of plants!!

Hello Cheryl! haha, thanks so much, I had to laugh when I read your brilliant comment - and yes indeed, hopefully it helps to get your collection into flowering mode faster! A lot of people are always suprised to see how much water cacti can actually be given - however only in the main growth period of course! The most important thing really is to water them thoroughly, but then to allow them to completely dry off and have the substrate fully dried up again for a few days too, before watering again! Hope your watering session went well, the other day, and wishing you a terrific Thursday and rest of the week too! Thanks for watching and for your wonderful support, best wishes!

@cactusjoe 10 ай бұрын
Hi Claude! Yeah, the weather has unfortunately been a rollercoaster for most of us this summer, I think! Indeed, that is the biggest challenge, which I always dread getting, when the plants have been watered and then the weather turns cool and humid - just what our cacti really do not need! But excellent that you have a dehumidifier for that, I do the same! And running a few fans/oscillating ventilators is usually a good idea too, as this helps dry things a bit faster too. Plus, it avoids stagnant humid air, which can be a party for fungi and all kinds of other nasties. Hope all goes well, best wishes!

Yeah, sorry to hear that, Dave, indeed the weather has just been so unpredictable all of this summer! And I know what you mean, I have been doing that very same shuffle a few times this year too, mainly with plants out of, then back again into the greenhouse. Also, the amount of times I have fitted the dark net shading (whenever we got the 35+C Sahara heat blast treatment)... then taken it back down again just a few days later (when we suddenly got the 18C constant rain downpourings treatment)... I bet you were having some of the same too! Anyways, hope the weather finally stabilises a bit, for a pleasant and sunny autumn period for us all! Thanks so much, James, brilliant that you liked the watering system and also the collection! This year we have been having an exceptionally rainy and cool summer, so my 300 litre water tank in front of the greenhouse was sufficient, as it kept being re-filled. Last year's summer was quite the opposite, super hot and almost 8 weeks without proper rain. So, despite having two additional 500 ltr tanks in the garden I had to revert to tap water which I treated prior to watering my plants. Cactus greetings to Northern California, hopefully the weather cools down a bit for you soon!

Nice job, Joe. I am using basically the same delivery system, but my tank and pump are portable. I do not collect rain water, but use natural spring water which has basically no additives. I do pH control and any type of chemical additive required within my storage tank and apply during the watering process. I like your water distribution as a spray, but I use just a single stream for distribution. This allows me to put the water directly on the top dressing. As you know, I grow under lights, so I rotate my plants once a week. This lets me put my hands on them to do a little inspection. Thank you for taking the time to post your video. I only have 200 plants, but our programs are pretty similar.
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 10 ай бұрын
Thanks Bill, indeed from everything I know about your setup (which I think is fantastic!!) and your process I agree that our work flows are pretty similar. And it sounds like also your watering setup is pretty advanced, especially with you managing the water pH and quality so rigorously too! One of the points I really wanted to get across in the video was that at the end of the day, every setup is unique but as long as we know the parameters and understand these, we can all experiment and find an "ideal" process and setup that works for ourselves - horses for courses, as the saying goes! Thanks for all your support, Bill, really appreciated! Happy growing and have a wonderful rest of the week!

Thanks joe such an interesting video on cacti and succulents. I live on a tropical island where I get lots of sun and sometimes lots of rain as well and I find that some plants are very difficult to grow for me. For example the echinocactus barrel always turns brown all over the body and it's not working because it starts from young. Also my astrophytums does the same. How often should I ferterlize my cacti.
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 10 ай бұрын
Many thanks, Marlene, brilliant to hear that you found the video interesting and useful! Also, really interesting for me to hear about some of the challenges that you face, growing these weird and wonderful desert plants! Are you able to grow your cacti, like the Golden Barrels, with some overhead protection from the rain outside? Or is it not just rain, but simply the high humidity that turns them brownish? Perhaps if you tried keeping them in a very sandy/gritty substrate and also under a bit of a rain protection if possible? Regarding fertilising, I do that twice a year only, in early Summer and about 6 weeeks later in late Summer. And it is really important to use a special Cactus Fertlizer (low in Nitrogen (N), and relatively high in Potassium (K) and Phospor (P) ) - avoid normal plant fertilizers, as these will 'bloat' and actually weaken cacti! I will put out a video on fertilising cacti in the near/medium future too! Enjoy your weekend, best wishes and happy growing!

Aww thanks so much Duncan, really happy to read that you are enjoying the videos, much appreciated!! Regarding your question: i would say that more than 90% of my plants are botanical species and only a small minority are hybrids of some sort. From a plant species conservation and protection point of view i personally am very keen to preserve the original botanical species in my collection as much as possible and therfore am also less interested in cross-pollinating and experimenting with all kinds of hybridisations. But that's just me and of course i also do appreciate the wonderful blooms that some hybrids have. Very best cactus greetings to you in Alberta, Canada, and have a wonderful week ahead! your pots stand in water after you water your cacti, does it vaporize over time? i don't know what your climate is or your climate inside the greenhouse, i'm just curious how long it takes until its gone since cacti hate wet feet. interesting :) btw how do you water your ariocarpus? i never ever water them from the top because i love it when all the fluffy white turns to a bone dry grey over the years (decades haha) if it never gets wet :D
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 2 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your questions: the pots will be standing in the (ca. 1cm high) surplus water of the drip trays normally just a very short time, as the substrate, the terracotta pots and also the plants themselves will soak it all up within hours. And the evaporation of the water starts up quickly too in the greenhouse with open windows and fans. So no problem with the surplus water. And in the rare case that there is more than 1-2 cm of water, I just drain it out with a short plastic hose. I grow my Ariocarpus quite "hard", and water them in the same way as they receive water in their natural habitats, with a gentle water shower from above. They dry quite quickly and I am quite happy with their natural look, even after 25+ years of growing from seeds. Hope this answers your questions, have a wonderful day and wishing you happy growing of course!!👍🙏☺️🌵🌵🪴🪴🌿🌿🌸🌺🌼🌺💚😎☀️

Joe what do you do about the water collected in the black trays after showering the potted specimens?
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 10 ай бұрын
Hi there! Yep, that is an excellent question (...which I wanted to, but at the end forgot to mention in the video, haha!). Normally, if it is only about 1-1.5 cm high, I just leave it and the water quickly gets absorbed by the substrate in the pots, plus it quickly evaporates in warm weather. However, only if it is higher than that, I use a thin water hose (the thin, transparent air pump hoses for aquariums are ideal) to drain that excess water - but I only do that if the weather suddenly turns cool and humid, so that the plants don't stand around in wet substrate for too long! Wishing you a relaxing Saturday evening and Sunday ahead!

Hi Ann, have you tried on Amazon or eBay? That is where I always order my bubble wrap, and it is offered in various widths up to 4m or approx. 12ft. there by a few sellers. Thanks for watching and commenting/connecting, best regards and happy growing wishes out to you in Alabama, USA!! 🙏🙏🙌👍😊🌵🌵🪴💚😎☀️
