When I was a kid I used to remember and play air guitar to loads of Brian May. This in turn made me want to learn to play guitar, but I was no musician at the start. I will say learning guitar gives me more of an appreciation for solos but at the same time, if the solo is shredding aimlessly, it does not make for a memorable solo for non musicians most of the time.

I don’t think this is much a feud, honestly Kirk is partially right that non-musicians won’t appreciate solos in general as much because they’re more into how cool they think something looks or sounds cool instead of how they’re structured in terms of the theory. Non-musicians don’t understand music theory hence why musician favorites like Polyphia or Jacob Collier don’t get as much attention as Bruno Mars or Slash. The latter wrote music that are easier for a larger portion of the world to enjoy(aka non-musicians) whilst the first set wrote songs that are honestly catering to music nerds like me who are honestly not that many compared to the rest of the world. This is where I’d argue Kirk knows more than a thing or two about this topic, One is probably one of the best examples, can you hum the tapping section? Maybe not but where it shines is how cool it sounds especially when you haven’t heard anything like it. Another example that may not be Kirk is Bohemian Rhapsody, the solo is a masterpiece, is it the most difficult solo? No, but can you hum it and understand the melody as a non musician? Yes. This is not take away credit from complicated music because they have their place in the music world, but the main thing that should be remembered is that Music is not a competition of difficulty, it’s an expression and a medium of feeling and expression, an expression enjoyed most by non-musicians if they can understand and join in even without learning an instrument.
