FFXI is one of the deepest games I've ever played, and even now I'm always looking for more information. In 2004 this wasn't as easy to come by....and thus enters the Brady Games Guide. But did this guide help more, or hurt?
New gaming videos every week! Nostalgic throwbacks, Top Tips, and just random hilarity fumbling my way through Final Fantasy XI, XIV, and a myriad of others. Released every Saturday.

OMG the Brady Guide. When I bought FFXI I’m November 03 I also bought the Brady Guide. Due to logistics I was unable to get internet service brought into my home until February 22/04. Due to this the Brady Guide became my best friend. I read it cover to cover multiple times setting up my plans for what race, gender, job, and Nation I’d even start in. Oh the memories, still gives my a warm feeling thinking back to those days. FFXI I think is a once in lifetime game. No other game I’ve ever played in my 40 years has ever filled me with the range on emotion that this game has. The adventures had, friends made and time spent on this game are some of the best of my life.

@@Huntin4GamesChannel have you ever thought about doing a video on all the places we never got to see? Was the Far East beyond Aht Urhgan where Gessho and Tenzen hailed from always meant to be mysterious land we never really see, other than Reisenjima eventually. What interesting stories are there to play through in the southern islands where the Mithra originate from? And what of the extreme north, hard lands full of Gigas, and Orcs. Don't you wish the developers got around to filling out more of the land rather than reusing the same maps as alternate dimensions?

Brady guide is pure nostalgia. I'll give it credit for a few things. In the sea of wrong/inaccurate data, there's good advice in there. The guide suggested setting up cure macros for white mages on a per party member basis using to . I set up my macros that way because of the guide and have largely kept it that way for my primary cures with some refinements for the past 17 or so years. It works and is much faster the using 1 cure macro and having to target before hitting cure.

I watched this entire video with baited breath, waiting for you to get to WAR/PLD and WAR/WHM advice. That subjob section was AMAZING. I still remember the first I heard of this game, watching a friend play it back in 2003 or 2004 "what job you gonna do?" *looks at guide* "I THINK I'M GONNA GO WITH THE THF/MNK COMBO." MEMORIES.
@Cyron757
@Cyron757 4 жыл бұрын
The guide! Oh my goodness. I still have my Fall 2003 copy which I got back around September 2003, and since the game was delayed until March 2004, I had plenty of time to devour it. Everything seemed so amazing back then. It covered jobs up to Lv 50, the first 4 levels for crafting, and up to Rank 4 missions. And yeah, the first pages with the Tarutaru doing all the different /emotes with a worm.... /welcome was always my favorite image there. The sections discussing "Your first 10 Levels", explaining the Auction House and personal Bazaars, "When things go bad", which was every other party... All the jobs seemed amazing on this thing. For the longest time I couldn't decide what job I would start off with since they all sounded great. I remember reading the Paladin page and how it stated that "Paladins made great party leaders", and feeling dejected at the thought that, unless I leveled Paladin myself, I wouldn't be able to be a party leader. Also, worst quote provided by the guide has to go to the Dark Knight's "ask for help" command. I believe it stated something like, "/p Enemy is attacking me. The pain is glorious!" No idea why they decided to make the Dark Knight sound like a masochist.... Read up on the Ninja sub jobs recommended. Nin/Rdm. Oh, how different the meta might have been if people followed the advice of this guide! So much more I could state, and I realize I'm just babbling at this point. There's just so much info in that guide, and so many months that were spent deciding how my time would be spent long before I ever set foot in Vana'diel. So much nostalgia. Last quote, taken from the "How far should I take role-play?" when discussing nation rivalries and how to handle them while role-playing. Tarutaru: "The people of Bastok are so dirty-wirty that they roll around in mud to get clean." Galka: "At least I can ride a Chocobo instead of a Rarab, stubby." I really hope we get to see more vids regarding the guide.

I didn't have a strategy guide for FFXI.. but this reminds me a lot of the strategy guide for FFVIII that I got along with the game. I also used to take the guide and flip the pages just to look at the great artwork of the characters and G.F.s. and maybe plan my next step on how to approach certain things... It was a mostly accurate and helpful guide other than that Brady Games Guide, apparently... Still got my FFVIII guide somewhere. It looks just as torn as the used copy you got there :)

I remember eating breakfast at ihop with my family, my sister, her husband (she hated ffxi and he loved it) and my wife. Well I wanted some of that sweet sweet lingonberry butter for my crepes.... If you haven’t already guessed it, I ordered rolanberry butter. My brother recognized the mistake instantly and just looked into my eyes like, no you didn’t bro, while my wife chuckled waiting for me to catch on to what I had done. I was totally lost, as was my sister, until finally it clicked and 3 of the 4 adults at the table chuckled about it for the rest of the meal. Ffxi changed gaming for me and legitimately took my gaming experience to a place I’m afraid I’ll never ever find again QQ. I’m really banking on the mobile release bringing it all back to me with a few minor quality of life changes and better graphics. That’s the only way I could get so immersed in a game again. Kinda all over the place with this comment but, tldr I miss 2007-2011 ffxi the most!!!

When I saw that Paladin in the Iron Musketeer set, I saw power, prestige... a noble calling that I had to have. I also was enticed by the Dark Knight description, and how edgy it was. Hurt yourself to deal damage to the enemy! I had never seen that in a game before! It was such a gem. I have the OG Fall 2003 edition, BEFORE Zilart was released. Info was so basic, yet the guide was still nearly 300 pages long. I heard that if you printed out all of FFXIclopedia it would be about 27,000 pages long.

Monk original end game use was Chi Blast with Kirin staff on Sky gods, you was never allowed to attack on any end game content. I always used weird combos I remember doing the Magian Stave trials on SMN/SAM back in Abby days, everyone looked at you strange, but these days a lot of people I seen use that combo

No one attacking anything in endgame was so dumb. "Oh the monster will get TP and kill us with a WS" Except anyone who unlocked BST knew monsters sat on 300 tp for minutes at a time because they WS on a timer, not when they get tp. But that's the way everyone else did it, so what no one's going to break tradition.

Thf/war was unironically amazing back in the day. I got to lvl 60, I think, as /war but kinda just stopped. That viking shield was some good stuff.

@@MrOvergryph Once they finally gave every one handed job (except BST for no reason) the dual wield they deserved, THF wasn't shackled to that /nin abomination anymore.

I'm surprised you didn't know some of those CTRL commands. Also, I think they took away CTRL-G as "call for help" many, many years ago. Too many players would accidentally press it, and got upset about it.

I owned the book was against using at the time(release) Wanted "blind" experience It seemed like every Linkshell had a Game Guide authority So to access him/her could take lengthy amounts of time through /tells Then it was "debated" if info was correct useful or accurate Wasnt till stopped playing(1st time) that I read outside Job pages~memories Happy Hunting^

I had that book and I also got the updated one from a year or so later. There's a lot of BS for sure but I also got a lot of use out of it because back then you couldn't Alt+tab out to check a website. I had skillchains and monster weaknesses at the ready.

Ah the good old Brady guide! Back when the game first came out and forums and such hadn't taken off for it people treated that thing like gospel. I was actually one of the very first level 75 non-JP WARs on my server. The entire time I was leveling people would ask me why I was leveling WAR and didn't swap to something "better", and that it was only useful as a subjob, etc. I actually tried the dreaded WAR/PLD for a bit at the suggestion of the Brady guide because nobody wanted a WAR as anything other than a tank. It was... somewhat functional for tanking exp, but not much more than that. Eventually I had a thought to try subbing NIN despite the Brady guide saying NIN is a bad subjob, because dual wielding is cool and WAR could use damaging 1h weapons in the form of axes and PLD swords. By this point I was doing a static with friends and they let me be DD since we had a PLD. I did good damage and was handy if we got an add, but once I got Rampage my damage went through the roof. This was before they nerfed TP gain on multihit WS, so just doing Rampage would give me back like 40 TP. The only thing better was a SAM spamming back to back Penta Thrusts endlessly, haha. Back then, Sushi didn't exist and ACC was the only stat anyone cared about (I spent weeks farming the Stroper Chyme for a Haubergeon and Sniper Rings), so Aggressor was absolutely HUGE and a boost nobody but WAR got since it was a level 45 ability. Whenever we had pickup people, they were always surprised at how fast our group tore through mobs. Once I got 75 I got my hands on a Joyeuse for offhand, and then eventually a Ridill. By this point WAR/NIN was a meme and everyone bandwagoned onto it to the point that everyone got sick of looking at them, but it was funny at first seeing one of the most damaging jobs in the game at the time be pigeonholed almost out of existance by the Brady guide because it was "better as a subjob". Anyway, can't wait to see more videos on this, some of the other job sections are absolutely hilarious and completely off the mark.

The question I have is who in the world would part with such a gem for a few bucks?! Do they have no soul? Yay for you I guess though! I still have my original cardboard FFXI game box from 2004 with like 7 CDs to instal and a thick game manual with all sorts of helpful and inane informations about the game and I want to take it with me beyond the grave! I love that thing.

The only thing I can think with the whole WAR IS TANK mantra is that when I first started playing, nearly all dunes parties required a WAR/MNK since a lot of people didn't seem to have advanced jobs unlocked. I remember not understanding the SJ well and trying to find parties as WAR/RDM, and people just laughed at me aha.
