FFXI Ninja - Brady Games Guide!
Final Fantasy XI has had many guides written for it over the years, but none better than the Brady Games Guide of 2004! In this reading we explore Ninja.....perhaps the most misunderstood of all Brady's guides attempts!
New gaming videos every week! Nostalgic throwbacks, Top Tips, and just random hilarity fumbling my way through Final Fantasy XI, XIV, and a myriad of others. Released every Saturday.

I come here to snuggle into the warm embrace of nostalgia, since everyone here in the comments is in the same boat, gushing over our memories of this game and this guide. There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said - the outdated nature of this guide was part of its charm for me. It made me feel like I was reading something that was written long ago before there was knowledge and established metas for the game. Those are the times that I'm jealous of - a time so long ago that people were just guessing and experimenting. Funny story, when I first got into the game and found out that some friends in college also played, and I remember telling them about what I had planned on eventually becoming - a Dark Knight / Black Mage. Yes, I told them I was going for DRK/BLM. This was before I ever unlocked a subjob, ever had any knowledge of the game - I thought the subjobs were more flexible (the way the guide makes them sound) than they actually are - and I assumed that being DRK/BLM sounded like a legitimately effective combo of jobs. That "learning the new meta as you go" and "knowledge through experience" feeling will never be recaptured, and it's something I will always treasure about this game.

I played elvaan ninja tank as my main job for about 3-4 years during 75 era. I basically lived on it as NIN/DRK. It was pretty potent. i tanked everything under the sun -HNM, burn party mobs, etc... Some japanese players said i was the best on the server. I dunno, but i loved the job and i used to think i was good at it. I would spam elements when i leveld up to keep ninjutsu capped. I'd land enfeebles when other jobs couldn't. When you get the -Ni enfeebles, it made tanking SO easy. Such good times.

On my first play through, I completely abandoned WHM at 57 and became a NIN. I was absolutely amazed when a new friend helped me obtain a quest item. I barely had to heal him and when I cast Haste he turned into a fricken machine. He looked so cool in his Scorpion Harness and his O-Hat. I became really good at blink tanking and could often take hate from my friend who was a PLD and keep it. This also helped him learn how to tank better as a PLD because I used him as my off-tank before I got Utsusemi: Ni. I would often attempt to take his hate whenever possible to keep him on his toes. This was a time before Yonin/Innin so it was hard to get people to accept our team tanking method during the mid levels. Plenty of DD's were available to pt and no one wanted two tank jobs. So at some point I had to find a static THF to level with me to 75. But I can say it was such a fun and competitive time in our FFXI lives though. I will never forget how cool it felt when we learned how to get better at both jobs by competing in the same pt over hate.

Hey there! Great video, just started playing FF11 on a private server again with a good friend of mine! Its funny I came across this video as my buddy was leveling a ninja and I was leveling a monk. After seeing some of his abilities it reminded me of the Nija in FFtactics. I recall, the ninja having elemental balls they could throw at enemies. I gotta say, I love the shadow aspect or the shadow design the nija has. I think its pretty awesome that you can tank mobs and the mobs hit your shadows rather then yourself. I love when devs create classes that are unique! Meaning, they take a simple idea and make it creative and interesting! Love your videos man, you always inspire me to get back into FF11, keep it up!

Considering this guide was written right before NA launch and geared for 75 cap, what they wrote about Ninjas active and passive traits is 100% correct. Dual wield was the main selling point to use as a sub job when warriors and rangers started spamming rampage. The other point of Nin was always utsusemi. Ninja had no good traits except for dual wield and no abilities until the introduction of Yonin/Inin. Mijin Gakure was our only ability at the time.

I never forgot how the guide had a small box on the job page providing a brief summary of how well each race performed in said job (i.e. Mithra: high evasion + accuracy). For Hume Ninjas, it simply stated "Looks great in pajamas". I loved this guide to bits. The fact that the guide emphasizes that a Ninja can cover so many roles makes me wonder how certain jobs would have behaved throughout FFXI's lifespan if we didn't adhere so strictly to meta complacency.

Turned out to be one of the best parties I had during my whole time on the Game. Still had provoke, enfeebled the enemy myself, RDM and BRD with haste and atk up. No one missed really cause of def and eva down steps. After the first few fights never really used Animated Flourish at all though. Just ised “Provokga” AoE heal xD

I love that book. It sits out as I still look at it all the time. The job has changed soooo much over the years now. The guides on how to unlock the jobs in the guide were accompanied with arrows on the maps for each zone that said: "??? NIN Quest" with a black line to where it was on the map IIRC, so the limited info, paired with the maps in the guide, had enough info to do most of the quests listed such as job unlocks.

I don’t think there has existed a more vague game, in terms of what you needed to do, than FFXI. I want to replay just for the sheer amount of content that was never discovered due to you needing a full party practically to do a lvl 15 quest. No the guide was not perfect but it was the best thing out there for information at the time and I used it often.

As a main ninja. The biggest tease for me playing forever, even to i119... Jubaku: Ni Job quest was quite hard solo, at 30. Kurayami was great enmity+ while tanking. Hojo was godsend once you can stagger Utsu ichi/ni Blade: Retsu was very strong, with a paralyze effect, it's tops. Then you get Jin for high damage. Blade: Hi/Metsu endgame! I wish /rdm with enspells did more damage, I liked it because haste+double/triple strike. /DNC made it work though with haste and HP drain samba.

I remember the leech battle being very difficult... maybe we were underpowered... all I really remember was failing a few times before we tackled it. Until dnc, nin was almost the only sub job I used. Even as a rdm main, /nin made us one of the most battle-capable combos around. Maybe even the most sustainable combo. Some battles took a long time... most battles did... but it was awesome. And the challenge was fun across the board. To unlock it, to take on high level battles (prime fights) solo, and even getting some of the abilities was awesome. And having to do a BCNM to get uts-ni added an additional level of excitement, and a fun challenge. Ninja was awesome. The cost of tools was the only negative in my opinion.

I loved FFXI, and all of the memories that I have from it, and I honestly would love to play a game with the way Brady Games described the game, but the whole ninja thing always bothered me. EVERYONE wanted you to be "/NIN ONRY!" and refused to try anything different. Go as a SAM/War? Nah, you can't evade attacks like a /NIN!!!!. I honestly hated the Ninja job so much. It was such a huge sink of money, and inventory space, which at the time was so hard to come by. Needed 300k to get the Utsusmi: Ni Scroll, or be able to do the BCNM with just the right group. Never got it back then. Never could, and couldn't even afford to level it. I was one of those players that was always poor.

I get that they didn't plan for Ninja to tank but I never got why they didn't just help the other tanks so it wasn't so heavily skewed to ninja. For instance they could have given PLD a spell like blink. Blink isn't as good as Utsusemi but it would be balanced because PLD has better defense.

I hated playing NIN tank. It was so hard to hold agro. I remember getting invited to tank for a party. The WHM insisted I come as PLD. Reason? The WHM hated NIN tanks because of agro issues and they said it was boring because they rarely had anything to do. I can't remember how much utility NIN had in Dynamis. But I knew how I contributed as PLD. One thing about NIN was their ability to debuff and boost mage damage. Square Enix could have easily stopped NIN tank meta by changing casting of Utsusemi. But I'm sure the player base would have thrown a fit!

if you gear for it, NIN can hit cap damage with the damaging SAN spells when you MB. Given that you can create your own SC and MB off that NIN is very underrated. Its mostly just miss understood and played wrong at retail end game. It actually kinda sucks because people don't wanna play it just elemental wheeling even tho its the best DPS they can do. Like NIN in magic damage/ MAB gear just doesn't seem like it should be a thing. Please change how NIN works SE. We want Katana to be better then the Ambuscade Sword or Dagger. In short. Katana should be the main source of damage with the ninjitsu stuff being supplemental damage and debuffs.

The guide came out just before the launch here in the US and the cap was only 50 that’s why a lot of what they talk about in the guide seems really off and vague.

Yes back during the noob days you could use swords for further strength. Many didn't really care though, it was all blur as everyone exping out of the Dunes, Quifim and the Jungle so fast on their 2nd jobs lol (or at least tried haha). Literally NIN was used 99% of the time as tank. The other only real viable option was an even more expensive route such as NIN/RNG that could fill the role of the burst class in the party (BLM/RNG/SCH as Dark Arts). It was rare if you could get a party that way, because most didn't know NIN could swap from tank to mega burst damage like the blms and rngs normally filled in the party. You were almost NEVER going to get a slot in the party as a DPS since their damage was just too weak without a RNG sub. You could do decent with a THF sub, but the DPS was just so damn weak similar to a THF and their SATAs were nowhere near as strong as what the THF pulled off to make up for it. Your party would just be subpar ish if you went that route so it was just better to use them as tank. Their damage was miles better than a SMN though, that job was 100% healer in parties lol. Even at lvl 70 oh man that poopy damage in parties... Funny how they were OP with HNMs though haha. DIFFERENT TOPIC THOUGH!

I remember as a joke after flagging up looking for party as a level 60 NIN i came to the party as nin/blm. My party leader laughed then swore at me to cut the tomfoolery and sub WAR!

Feel like the guide should of had an opening line "So you've been saving up millions of gil and you want to go broke." Brady games should of highlighted /thf steal and mug just to soften the expense haha

I remember reading this guide when i first unlocked NIN and thinking it was the better route for my taru despite everyone I partied with telling me to sub WAR and tank. To make things worse, during this time I was on PS2 and didn't have a keyboard so i painstakingly wrote out macros saying i was a nuking NIN and not a tank, and even had backup reply macros depending on what people replied with just because it was so annoying and slow using the PS2 on screen keyboard to even type out the most basic of sentences...this strategy didn't last very long as it became quickly obvious that NIN/WAR was the way to go...but I still reflect on this from time to time and think about how embarrassing it was trying to convince my party that NIN/BLM was going to be better than NIN/WAR...I can't even begin to imagine what they were saying about me in their linkshell chats.

I could totally see nin getting healing spells, with bandages as tools, or some other salves or something, or even give it a reraise spell. Now that would totally increase the incentive of using mijin gakure, and increase survivability of nin even more. I mean, SE seems intent on not making nin a top tier DD, nor a tank, nor really a competent support role (we STILL don't have jubaku and dokumori Ni, and it wouldn't matter if we did anyway, cause they hardly stick on anything that matters). So, SE should just make Nin a completely self-reliant solo job. Either that, or make it so AoEs, any AoEs (spells, monster abilities, avatars 2 hours, anything), on Nin wipe out a maximum of 4 shadows at once. That alone would make it much more appealing to bring Nin on some tougher fights, like Kirin or HELMs. Or you know, just boost katana WS, like MNK got, so Nin can be on par with a Sam for damage. Remove the main-hand requirement for REMA weapons. We went through the troubles of building 2 katanas. Let us at least get the full benefits from them, ffs.

That guide had so many inaccuracies and I solely blame it for the playerbase refusing to allow Beastmasters into their parties due to the lie it spread about their pets making the party lose exp.

So look, I think there has seldom been a bigger waste of a tree than the printing of the FFXI Brady game guide. But in Brady's defense, if it was published in 2004, it might've had to be written before Rise of the Zilart was released in NA, with only some insight from the dev team to assist with the guide. And if one thing is certain, the dev team doesn't have a friggin' clue what the community is going to do and how the meta will shift prior to release. As evidenced by all those Samurai tanks.
