When he was prince he helped karna a commoner ( secretly a god child) and made him a king and ash was his teachers son.

Also, while he's the "evil" antagonist of Mahabharata, he quite close with his subjects, Karna is one of his best buddy too.

He is Karna's closest confidant and childhood friend of Ash, along with also being their "boss" as the highest Kaurava. He brought Karna up from poverty and gave him his own kingdom simply because his skills impressed him, but he is also the main antagonist of the entire myth. The simplest way I can think of to describe Duryodhana to a westener is that he is Indian Jason, a very morally flawed man who nonetheless has some incredibly compelling characteristics that makes him very good at garnering the loyalty of people much stronger than him.

if you know who his master in this ordeal actually is, the reveal will hit you like a brick.
