Fiberglass Kayak Restoration - Part 1

5 жыл бұрынIn this 2-part series I try my hand at fiberglass repair. I am by no means an expert at any of this. This video chronicles the story of why I had to do fiberglass repair through preparation for paint. Enjoy.
Materials Used:
Bondo Fiberglass Cloth
Bondo Stage 2 Fiberglass Resin
Bondo Stage 3 Body Filler
Interlux Pre-Kote Primer (White)
Interlux Special Thinner Solvent 216
Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Paint (Sapphire Blue)
Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Paint (Black)

Beautiful job. Curious if you could update us on how well the paint has held up. Also, can you provide a tool and supplies list, specifically the brands and specifics for the sprayer, primer, and paint.

The paint has scratched fairly easily. When I do it again I’ll go with a gel coat instead.

Auto body repair tech here, I would have put a sheet on the inside first and let it dry so you'd have something to back the outside against for support.

Awesome! I just purchased a buggered sea kayak for £50 - it's my first as well. It's going to be my lockdown project. Thank you for the instructional first half! I do have some existing fibreglass repairs on the kayak that I need to remove. Would that just be a case of sanding it all down and starting over? They weren't done well at all.

Glad you enjoyed it. Hope it helps. As to the existing patches if the fiberglass is dry (didn’t have good resin infiltration) I would remove it and start over. If it looks solid you could sand and add to it. Enjoy your project!

Much different than a marine epoxy approach.

Do you know how this repair lasted? I'd love to try polyester resin and bondo for kayak and canoe repairs but in most caes I've been told to avoid it and use epoxy to avoid it cracking later. Polyester and bondo would save a lot of time.

The repair has held up flawlessly to this point. The paint job was not very durable and has scratched a bit on the bottom. I’d recommend a different paint like a gel coat. Good luck.

Troy Stobert thanks for adding the list of materials. That was really helpful. Quick follow up question, how has the paint stood up? Unlike a boat which rarely scrapes on a beach etc a kayak does when you get in or out if you don’t launch from a pontoon. I would expect paint to scrape off. I’m really interested as I am about to restore my sea kayak. Thanks. Iain

Iain Thomson I have scraped some paint off the bottom. Mostly on rocky exits. It has held up well with sand. Gel coat would definitely be more durable.
