In this fiddle lesson I look at the kickoffs and intros across a wide variety of genres including bluegrass, country, Cajun, barndance, Scottish ceilidh, jazz and pop. I look at the purpose of an intro and how it can be structured. I stress how important it is for a fiddler to be able to confidently lead into a tune in such a way that both audience and band are very clear as to what is happening. A free pdf of the sheet music used is available to subscribers (see below). There are many more free video lessons on fiddle tunes and techniques elsewhere on The Fiddle Channel.

Chris, when did you start playing? You have so much musical knowledge just at your finger tips, you don't seem to really think about it. It reminds me of Glen Campbell when he was a session player, someone could name a song and he could, seemingly without thought, play it backwards. It must feel so good to, after the kickoff and a couple notes, see people's faces when they recognize the song, smile or laugh while grabbing a partner and heading for the dance floor, or having people laughing and singing while they are dancing to music you are playing. You found a tune for me, "Put Your Little Foot". You said it was similar to "Shoe the Donkey". I happened to stumble upon a video I believe was called "Learn Irish Dancing". The song was "Shoe the Donkey" and while the tunes are a bit different, something I wouldn't have noticed by just listening but comparing the actual music it becomes clear. Thank you for that effort, my whole family loved yoour video and I used it to teach my grandchildren to dance this. Anyway, the Irish video, music slightly different, the dance is exactly the same. It's really a bit amazing because one tune played since my grandmother was a girl in a Texas German dancehall, Anhalt, to a small civic hall in Ireland and being danced by couples young and old dancing, all the distance and time that's past, it's still the same. I love it.

Hi Amy. Thanks for your kind comments. I started playing when I was 7, and I've been doing it full time since my early 20's. It's great to think of your grandchildren dancing to my video!

My new claim to fame is that I communicate with the musician who played the fiddle on an almost hit single song by Steps! 😂🤣😂

Good video, as I'm seeing is typical from this channel. I played violin in orchestra during school, but never got experience with fiddle tunes or bluegrass, despite always loving it. Bit of a sidenote, but have you ever heard "Candy" by The Blasting Company? It's not even the style of song played in this video, but I guess exploring your channel has got me thinking about more that I'd like to play.
