As a German speaker, I'm blown away by how much I understand. I did this show in HS as Motel. One of the best experiences of my life.

Yiddish is mostly made up from German, much like Ladino being mostly Spanish with a dash or two of Hebrew, that's how diaspora languages are born.

Would be wonderful if the whole production got filmed for wide viewing. Beautiful.

Fabelhaft! I just saw Fiddler last week, in the round no less, at Hale Center Theater in Sandy, UT. It was a marvelous production. This looks like it was a great time too!

1960's-1970's: No one wants to speak Yiddish anymore, Fiddler becomes a smash hit in Hebrew. 2020: Golde and family sing Sabbath Prayer in (probably) their mother tongue, Yiddish - on Zoom.

Goshhhh I only just learned about this production of Fiddler, would've loved to have gotten to see it in Yiddish (wish I could fully understand it though, only bits and pieces)! Really hoping it got a proshot filmed, would love to see it someday!

I have just come across this..and it is an absolute joy to listen to! ... I speak German ..and having listened to my mother speaking her 'Low German' , and also having experience of living on the Dutch border for a coupe of years (I spoke German, they spoke Dutch and we understood one another!)...I was thrilled by how much of this beautiful rendition I was able to understand. Of course, now I want to watch the whole production!!!

Did they change the lyrics? The cast recording doesn’t have Tevye say “traditsye” going into the song

Do you call this Yiddishkeit sad .. come to New York and see what Yiddishkeit means
@malang73 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like German language..
@titanrodickable Жыл бұрын
Of course it does. Yiddish is closely related. Think of it as a version of German with a bunch of Hebrew words mixed in along with a slightly Slavic element. This is/was the lingua franca of Eastern European Jewish civilization right up to the Holocaust.
