at 2:49. I did not think about this much when I was a kid but between Tzital and Motal I think Motal was the smartest one of the two. he knew the rule of the game (if you get my drift) he knew he had to prove to Tevia that he can financially support his daughter which is why he wanted to wait until he got his new sewing machine to ask Tevia for his daughter's hand. Tzital also had a point. I can see both sides of the argument. Tzital was afraid that if her father agreed on a husband for her before Motal asked her father for her hand it would be too late.

Though not Jewish, I cannot help but pay homage to the beautiful prayer scene. It shows the sacred tradition of the Sabbath, its timeless call to gather around the table, light candles, pray, sing, and share a meal in a spirit of fellowship and worship. It shows the centrality of family to the Sabbath, just as the Sabbath sits at the centre of the Ten Commandments, with glory to God foremost and encompassing of all. As part of the prayers, the husband blesses his wife, the parents bless their children, and the family, together, bless the God of the Universe. It is so pure and lovely, as conveyed here, a sanctified, ancient observance given by God to His chosen people and preserved through time as no other.

My favorite scene in the movie. Starting with the typical jabbering of a husband and wife, showing the humanity of Tevye and his wife, Golde. And, the timidity of a suitor of the oldest daughter in asking for her hand in marriage. Then, as the family quickly collects at the table, a lone oboe sets the tone of the gathering. The song, sung exclusively by the parents, is a beautiful expression of the mother and father for the children's good fortune, a meaningful and solemn blessing of the Sabbath tradition. As a father of daughters, one of whom is already married, my heart cannot contain my emotion when Tevye's sings, "May He send you husbands who will care for you." God, I pray that You will grant my daughters those kinds of husbands, there are so very few of these kind and nurturing men in our current day and time. And, finally, the climax slowing building in volume, showing the entire village celebrating together. This is more than mere sentimentality, it is cinematic depth of feeling matched by few.

Ooo! I love that quote so much! "Even a poor tailor is entitled to some happiness"...especially when he repeats it later on in the story...

Priceless , as I grew up this was a constant theme , the changing of traditions , letting go , holding on , and going forward.

When Motel quotes Tzeitel's own words later on, Tevye comments "He's beginning to talk like a man!" I love that.

I pray God does keep everyone of you safe during these crazy times...This is just moving to see family so close. Americans we barely take time now to even talk to our children or spend time. We have become too busy wrapped up in frivolous matters.

Forgive me.....this coming from an imposing Gentile. This movie has such an important place in my heart. Irregardless of it's Jewish ties....it imposes reality upon my heart. Is it so different from us all? The common themes within and without seem to tug on all the heartstrings of all of us.We aren't really different at all, is what I believe. I'm Teyve, I can so relate......God bless you all, I feel this Fiddler on the Roof within me............Just another Gentile under God

This makes you think about how parents (it seems to me) don't bless their children like this anymore. May God return the hearts of the parents to their children and the hearts of the children to their parents once again so that the generation of the righteous maybe secure once more in Jesus name.
@FuzzyFace737 жыл бұрын
This is based on the traditional blessing that religious Jews give to their children on Sabbath evenings
@eromedaniel27 жыл бұрын
Yes. But I did not mean the traditional blessing that Jews give. I was talking about the spirit of just blessing your children in general. I am of African descent and from a Christian family. Family members blessed us as I grew up and my dad still does that today.

Grace H My parents neither protected nor defended me. They gave me no blessings. We had no communal life dedicated to a binding power greater than ourselves. We are now mostly out of touch.
@eromedaniel27 жыл бұрын
Dear Snuggles, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you are a Christian and if not, I hope that you will discover the power of Jesus to find rest for yourself and to be restored with your family. Here is a blessing from the Bible that I love: "May the Lord bless you and guard you. May the Lord make His face shed light upon you and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up your face and give you peace." Bible, book of Numbers 6:23-27 I hope you will experience this :-)

Grace H Thank you very much Grace. Yes, I'm a Christian, but I started late in life, so the words are not ingrained. That's a beautiful verse and blessing, though.

A lot of Christian homes need family sabbath. Each part is a prayer for every role and member of the home.

It's not the religion that stirs the heart. Religion is simply the vehicle. It's the fact that these parents wish the very best for their daughters, that they love them and want them to be happy.
