Say Heah Crocket, Congrats on your popularity in our bush craft community. I recently experimented with some Military Tactical Knives to see for myself how they fair in the bush and I was pleasantly surprised how the Ka-Bar U.S.M.C. and my Vintage Military Issue MK-1. Infact I'm surprised why more guys don't use it for bush craft, it really preformed nicely and it complimented using it with the bigger U.S.M.C. Then I made a 5 tool set that can easily fair great fir a longer extended bush craft trip or you don't have to take all 5 into the bush at one time, but the knives passed with flying colors and the set didn't cost a arm and a leg. I took my Recon Tanto and my Seal Pup Elite added a BK-14 with scales and used it as my neck knife. .I also added a Estwing Double Bit Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw, again a very functional set in the bush. Even though I process wood with the double bit hatchet which became my Fav's hatchet in the bush over my Estwing Sportsman Hatchet. I have other ones like my G B ' s and Hultafors Bruks. and one I had customised into a very good House Axe. Anyhow I baton with the Recon Tanto to make kindling because it's longer and has a flat spine. The Seal Pup Elite does shine as a camp knife and does all the chorus necessary with a knife that size..What ever S.O.G. did by sprinkling some Cryo Dust on it, they did a good job with the AUS8a. stainless which I find the Recon Tanto similar to the Seal Pup Elite. Great video. and I can see why you rank so high. Thanx, Bro.

That looks like good times man! I really need to get me some snowshoes so I can get up in the mountains in the winter. I really like my SOG NW Ranger. I haven't tried out the Seal Pup Elite, but it looks to be a solid choice. Cold weather always makes for a good test. I love the looks of the Seal Pup. How are the ergos compared to The NW Ranger?
@Cr0cket2010 жыл бұрын
Both have good ergos. Main difference is the handle material. NWR is more of a rubbery feel and the seal pup is GRN (a harder plastic feel but it has decent traction to it). Just filmed a video comparing the two knives. Will likely upload that one next. Seems to be some interest in comparing the two from a good handful of people.

The one feature about the Pup y'all mentioned was the top thumb choil. If I had my way if I was designing the blade, I would not have made the difference between where the tang ends and the blade begins so disparate. Also, only have jimping on the upslope of the thumb choil. I don't see the practicality of the full-length jimping (or the "rasp"). I know, totally different knife now, right? That's why I'm such a highly successful knifemaker. :(

Great video Cr0cket20. The knife looks to test ok but not one I would use often. It seems like it's an outdoors knife but wants to look like a combat tactical blade. My experience is that it's fine for a collector who likes a deadly looking blade but not practical enough for regular outdoor use. On another note BenchMade Griptilion you reviewed it and I bought it it's my favorite edc utility blade thanks for the recommend
@jaja-nw2ft Жыл бұрын
not only for collectors. this is good blade for those who go overseas, or for other military purposes. not every knife guy is interested to make a wood works in the forest

Oh, and I also have a S.O.G. Trident 2.0 which I checked out, the steel also is good and the same as the Seal Pup Elite and the knife is very sharp, I even think it's a little sharper than the Seal Pup Elite. I teamed it with my Copy of a Brush Issue Khukuri it's my Himalayan Imports M-43, I also use my Cold Steel SISU with this set. Coffee on the open fire and a baked potato never taste as good. I enjoy it alot more than just going to Micky Dee's for coffee and fries, and the scenery is much, much nicer..Yeah, I know that smell, Yesh, I know excactly what you mean.
@paulie4x17 жыл бұрын
Say Heah CrOKet, I'm still using my Makeshift Set, But I teamed my Seal Pup Elite TiNi with my Condor Wilderness Tool, I carry both Seal Pup Elite and the Wilderness Tool side by side cross draw. and my Folding Saw and my Gerber Multi Tool on the other side with my piece of mind also holstered on the other side, I usually just take my Haversack with my other C's. I like the compact tool's and as you know that their pretty good performers at least I think so. I always like my bush craft knives a little longer, and my SealPup Elite TiNi is a perfect size for me, I like the distal tapper blade that makes the Seal Pup Elite pretty strong If I go on a scout with possible overnighter, Yeah, I might leave my Wilderness tool and take my Recon Tanto and my Estwing Double Bit Hatchet, I like using my Corona with the tear drop handle shape that I attach on a paracord bracellet works great. the Haversack carries my water bottle, and a small tarp plus other things to keep me warm, Yeah, I would really recommand the Seal Pup Elite as a camp/bushraft knife to everyone, beginners and even seasoned users, I know they will like it. ,, .

Say Heah CrOcket, I just got my Druit 240 in my hand and I don't have to use others Steel Will's, If you don't get one "You snnoze you loose", seriously little buddy, It's ALL that and then some. I was going to get the larger model but I have a nice 6" blade in my Puma Bowie2 that I match with one of my Weidmannshiel Knife that s about the same size as my Mora Clipper but in stag and just a tich thicker, But hand made in 440c. They have a smaller size too in the Druit's, But regardless texting you I just made up my mind to buy a stable of Steel Will's their that good. ,, .

Crocket tip strength testing..... stick .... pry .... pry a little harder ...pause, yeah that would probably do it! lol. I actually really liked that test because it could simulate digging for insects and rooting. I don't own this one but I've been impressed with SOG's AUS8. I think I like it better than Cold Steel's version as it just seems to stay sharper, longer. So, now that you've had some time with it, do you have a favorite between it and the NW Ranger?

For me I think the Seal Pup Elite is a perfect blade length, and I proved that to myself, you see I have a good bushcraft knife collection in my stable, I have John Bradley "Best Camp Knife" excellent tempered 52100, a Rod Garcia Skookum in 3V, Benchmark 162 Bushcrafter in S30V, Cold Steel Sisu in San Mai 3, Blind Horse Bushcrafter in 0-1, Ka-Bar BK-16, BK17, in CroVan I noticed the four inches were a tich too short, and my Ka-bars were better for me, so I got the S.O.G Seal Pup Elite, and that got me to admit a 4 1/2"-3/4" blade is a perfect size knife for me, I hate to plug my Busse Son of Badger, as my favorite knife for bushcraft, but it is, Saber Grind in INFI with a 4 3/4" blade, to me is the most perfect knife.
@Cr0cket2010 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on that size. I narrowed the perfect knife size (for me and an outdoors knife) to 4-6". I found that the 4" while not bad, just leaves a little bit to be desired. I like that 5" blade length or +/- just a bit. Seems to be big enough to do most tasks with some knowledge but not too big to carry all that steel around a mountain side.

so what do you think about the AUS-8 steel in comparison to 1095?
@22bjonah8 жыл бұрын
+Jules MacFarlane 1095 > aus-8 all day. the only real advantage of aus-8 over 1095 is that it's stainless, but that being said it's not very rust resistant. So at least for me 1095 > aus-8

It's not likely you will ever have to survive for any length of time in the wilderness, that said there might come a time when you have to spend the night out there cold and wet, knowing what to do in that kind of situation would could very well make the difference. Instead of chopping wood with a knife actually go camping and get good at that.PS. I just bought a SOG seal pup 1 today, sounds like it could be a reliable knife.

@GhettoRanger015 жыл бұрын
Why do you beat the shit out of your knives? Do you know what a hatchet or a machete is for? Also a bic type lighter is second to none for lighting fires or signaling in the dark.
@Cr0cket205 жыл бұрын
Beating the "shit" out of a knife is a matter of opinion. Also, going rougher on a blade than I normally would provides greater data for review purposes. While I love the axes I have, I am more inclined to take my knives on long backpacking trips because of the significant weight difference. It's good to understand in that case what a knife can and can't do. Especially flushed out in controlled environments as opposed to a backpacking trip. Yes a bic lighter will often light a fire in seconds. But if it's lost, you're out of fuel, it gets dropped in the snow...it's good to understand and most importantly practice with other methods.
@GhettoRanger015 жыл бұрын
@@Cr0cket20 You spend a lot of time lost in the wilderness, do you? Personally, I prefer to either go home or to a tent and eat and drink a few beers as apposed to hacking around with a knife in the woods all night, I understand that you and those like you fantasize about being stranded in the woods and surviving off of trapped rodents and spearing fish but then reality sets in.......
@Cr0cket205 жыл бұрын
No we just have a different expectation of what to get outdoors. I like to rough it and increase my skills and knowledge base. You like something different. Nothing wrong with either.
@GhettoRanger015 жыл бұрын
@@Cr0cket20 Actually, I have spent time in the wlderness many times, never had to chop wood with a knife, didn't have a flashlight when I was in the Big Horn Mts in wyoming, a Bic lighter served me very well, my feet got wet, cold, was facing frostbite but the lighter came through and I built a fire to warm my feet and dry my socks. I had a Case XX kodiak knife and there's no way I was chopping with it.
