The measurements of the knife are made to perfection, from what I was told it was made for a American Elite military group. There are videos on KZfaq that show durability tests and that's pretty much the, "end-all be-all" for my, almost a $100 worth of a knife. This KZfaqr has not shown the durability test, so may KZfaq have mercy on his soul...

You need to go to wal mart in the kitchen knife section they have $0.99 knives that is perfect for your needs. Your NOT an outdoorsman stay behind your keyboad. The only gripe i have about this knife after 7+ years is the bottom of the handle dose need more grip but i solved that problem on my own many years ago. Ive used this for basic jobs like cutting tomatoes to back packing and using as a dive knife its never failed me

I think it would be a superb defensive tool. Not so much a woodcraft blade. I used to have the SOG SEAL Pup but did not like the serrations so I gave it to my kid. It was light, fast and nimble.

To be honest, I really don't trust SOG's 7Cr17MoV steels, I would rather choose the AUS8, as it is tougher in my OP. Good video :) Mayor Fuglycool

Bad review of a great tactical/military type knife. To those who know how to use this knife for its intended purpose, it is an awesome knife. A less knowledgeable person who is not that experienced with knives might not know or realize the capabilities of this knife or even how to wield it. The Seal Pup is an excellent combat tool.

I hate to state the obvious here.. but you're reviewing a combat knife as if it were a camp or survival knife. It's neither. It's an anti-personnel last line of defense combat knife.. and in that aspect, it's a pretty damn good knife.

When CALoco and Demon Rats disarm us, I still have a 1/2 dozen hammers, axes & Machete is my brother-in-law. Rwanda’s are pretty effective with Machetes. 1 million in 4 months; I understand the Hutu used cheap $5 Machetes. Thank Good think they didn’t have combat knives.

This is a great knife, virtually indestructible, you can hammer it into a tree and stand on it... It might not be the greatest knife to cut an apple, but guess what, it's not really made for cutting apples, and yet it does a pretty decent job at it. This knife can handle almost all the rougher work you throw at it. SOG has one of the best heat treatments of AUS-8 steel and the combination with the thick edge makes it a very strong tool. Grind it to a convex edge and it's even stronger. I love this knife. If I can only take one knife on a survival trip, it's going to be this one... For a (excellent) tactical knife, it does a really great job at bushcraft / survival too....

Is that plastic (kydex?) sheath the correct one for this particular knife? The comparable sheath for mine is shaped exactly to the blade inside and not the symmetrical 'dagger' shape of yours. There's also a cut-out on the cutting edge side of my sheath so it can be used for slicing paracord without removing the knife. On top of all that, it's got to a four-way positionable 'quick-release' belt attachment. It also came with another sheath made of strong nylon (with a plastic insert) whereby it covers the knife from front to back and fastens with one of those male/female squeezy clip things and all manner of straps and studs for a variety of fixing options (perhaps for attaching to a back-pack?). It says on the blade of my example "2005 Special Edition" so perhaps that's the reason for the different accessories. Still the same actual knife of course.

How does this knife do in terms of rust? I mean it's a "SEAL" knife. So that means it can go in the ocean? Will it rust?
@nickallen83332 жыл бұрын
No, I’ve swam in the ocean a lot with this knife when I lived in Florida and it never did but I can honestly say that I could never get a good edge on it and only carried it when i swam incase I had to stab something.

Yup i too was unpleasantly surprised by how my seal pup did not cut very well. The marketing of this knife doesn't go much beyond "the choice of navy seals." Still, i liked the looks of the knife enough to hold onto it. Good review

First in for most I think my SOG Seal Pup is an older model. It’s made from AUS 8 steel and came with a nylon sheath with a liner.I’ve used it for skinning game I take it when I go fishing I’ve skinned squirrels and rabbits with this knife. My hands have never slipped when the knife is wet or bloody and has retained a good edge.Quite frankly I like and have enjoyed this knife! It just seems to do everything well not great but good enough. I now live in Florida where it is very humid and-this’s knife shows no signs of Rust so far. The best thing is it only cost me $50 when I purchased it. At yes Walmart. It has a new home now I give this knife to my 17 year old daughter after a good cleaning up! Hopefully she’ll enjoy it as much as I have.😎

Where did you purchase the knife from? I noticed on SOG's website they're now selling Seal Pups made from CHINA instead of TAIWAN. I've been looking for the legit TAIWAN version, so if anyone can help it'd be much appreciated.

I'm not sure. They may have moved production on later versions or something. Maybe someone else can weigh in here.

Richard Martinez SOG makes a $6x.xx seal pup knife that's more tacticool marketing than useful that's made in China, their $12x.xx seal pup ELITES are still made in Taiwan. I have and regularly use the latter (partially serrated), great general purpose overall knife. I still have the box too after a year, says Taiwan :)

I recently got mine from Amazon. Seal Pup, Taiwan, nylon sheath. I got it for a self-defense knife. I am 77 years old, permanently disabled. It came sharp enough for self defense and I will only use it for self defense. I have limited mobility. Funny thing, it came in factory packaging, no shipping box or envelope. it arrived in perfect condition.

@bermo6110 ай бұрын
Seems a little nitpicky. People buy this knife because they want a knife with its classic looks in a more usable size for camp chores. The blade profile was designed for combat but I am guessing most will not use it for that. If I wanted a great food prep knife, I would bring one from my kitchen but that would hardly be good at batoning. This is a survival blade. The handle while not as comfortable as Kraton, is a lot more durable. And the price point of this knife is excellent. If you can live without the tini coating, the knife is about $50. Not bad in this day and age for a knife that will likely last a lifetime.

Basically, not a very good review. The reviewer didn't have any instruments to measure anything, just made guesses. Missed the overall purpose of the knife, although he States it, he then goes and talks about other uses for the knife such as slicing an apple. The purpose is not to be a slicer. This is a combat knife and survival. It's meant to be used hard. Another point the reviewer missed is that the ridges on the back are functional, acting as a very rough grinding surface. The knife is designed to plunge and do maximum damage to another person. It's also designed for the military personnel, who must sometimes use it for a variety of tactical and survival purposes. It's a bruiser. And AUS 8 blade material is a fine selection because it optimizes multiple areas such as corrosion resistance, blade retention, toughness and price simultaneously. Basically the reviewer is certainly not a materials engineer or really any kind of a person with extensive combat experience with proven qualifications to intelligently comment. Just another KZfaq video by a novice that provides marginal value in my estimation. Another perspective and perhaps you learn a little something about the knife from the reviewer, that's about all I found this review useful for.
@lucasiothefourth73973 ай бұрын
Loved the review. Don't mind the butthurt ones in the comment section that made the mistake of buying a sog to begin with so let them have their lil say 😂. Yes as a knife collector if you want a fighting knife just get the much higher quality ka-bar or the srk for either a tad bit more or much less if gone the srk route and both are much more durable than this thing. We were all new to the knife scene once and god i remmeber when i used to argue my gerber Bear Grylls ultimate knife was the best thing ever.
@lucasiothefourth73973 ай бұрын
I'll expect an apology from you all to this man after you's try out a bk7 (half fighter half bushcraft/survival) or bk14 (more buschcraft but equally as capable for all) and realise how much superior even the cheapest best options are.
@jhock91715 жыл бұрын
I have one of the original Japanese models, and though the construction quality is a bit superior (to be expected) to the later Taiwan productions, I have to agree that overall as a tactical knife, it seems a little more style over substance in its design. I respect it for being worthy enough of earning its own NSN, but outside of its corrosion-resistance, I'd much rather have an SRK or Campanion or even a Nimravus in a scenario where I need a fighting knife.
@canadafree2087 Жыл бұрын
Don't know if you'll see this 4 years later. The SRK was first issued to SEALS then the SOG was issued to the SEALS later.

Crazy that you can buy a Mora or Hultafors for $15 and they will have better steel, better handles and an overall smarter design. I tend to stay away from American fixed blades. Cheap steels and materials sold at a premium price. Bark River being the exception, of course.
