Fieldsports Britain - Crunch Week for Pigeonshooting

The UK government may or may not restrict pigeonshooting and other pest control this week. It all depends what we, the shooters, tell them. There are three ways to get your message across to the bureaucrats:

Despite what the British government is trying to do to shooting, we are out learning new skills. I run a small pest control buisness and because of these revocations I can no longer remove nests/eggs or birds, mainly feral pigeon that are nesting in houses/flats, food stores , warehouses etc. I also cover nearly 8000 acres of arable and livestock aswell as numerous smaller clients and we all need a quick solution to this mess. I've contacted natural england and defra regarding my applications but haven't heard anything other than automated responses, whilst i appreciate my case is just 1 of thousands, but has anyone actually had an individual licence issued yet? Or is it just a smokescreen, the hole things a joke

I have done the BASC survey. I enjoy shooting at my local Hft club, being out in the countryside, i don’t enjoy shooting pigeons, it’s necessity.

Enjoyable 'edition' as usual,.I especially enjoyed the section on Andrew Venables' firearms training . There are some good ideas and tips in this one. I note that at this point you have some seven thousand views on this video, and 233 thumbs up ( or down ) and then only 50 comments. I would urge folks to join in and show a little more support to ( and for ) the work that Charlie, David et al put into this sport of ours.

I wouldn't say that I enjoy pigeon shooting. I enjoy being in the countryside and if the farmers are kind enough to allow me to spend time in their fields, it's only fair that I repay that kindness by doing some pest control for them.

Releasing a deer back into a built up area! That's what was planned for that MJ that found it's way into the shopping centre. We had similar in a local multi storey car park. RSPCA captured it for release, but this was captured in a city centre.

To my fellow hunters across the pond, stay strong. Illogicality hidden behind “ethicality” is the reason for what is happening. Those who are too ignorant or weak to understand the concept of wildlife management and all its’ implications have created a lot of issues for the future of field sports in your fine country. The truth always manages to make itself apparent, and in this case it’s no different. Just continue to stand behind the truth and this mess will be over soon.

12:59 the trigger on the t-bolt is terrible! I know I have one! And if you are going for a precise prone shot you shouldn't wrap your hand around the grip like that, you put it to the side. That stops you pulling the rifle left or right when you take the shot.

emailed natural england about my personal licence application, after i had heard nothing for over 4 weeks, got fobbed off with we are having more personnel brought in, to deal with all the applications. we are prioritising applications by post, thus meaning that online application will be last.

Not helpful to select information from the new licence to suit your agenda, or to misreport to your viewers who might use you as their only update on the general licence. As i’m sure you well know the licence says to only undertake lethal control of birds during their peak breeding season IF LETHAL CONTROL AT OTHER TIMES OR USE OF OTHER LICENCED METHODS WOULD NOT PROVIDE A SATISFACTORY SOLUTION. Perhaps further fuelling uncertainty for those of us that hope to continue to control these pests species isnt the best method.

Also for those that may be worried about what to do with any woodpigeons they shoot under the new licence. The new licence GL31 also states that ‘woodpigeons killed or taken under the licence may be eaten and in accordance with goverment policy may be sold for human consumption’

A very interesting video, its just a pity that WMS are shooting over other peoples land without the correct permissions. Better check the next time you are shooting there if you want to keep a firearms license.

I shoot I love it I could not be with out it I understand the importance off shooting pest birds but the videos hat show piles off bird or numbers spoke make me cringe dew to people getting the wrong idea honestly just time down true shooters and hunters know the score !!!!!

Laws based on feelings are never good. But I have never understood how city dwellers whose livelihoods are not impacted get to decide laws and "morality" for farmers and hunters. It will cause a food shortage and be used to demand the UK crawl back to the EU overlords.

I have never felt comfortable killing any bird in the breeding season. Not that concerned with crow family but pigeons I feel are a sporting bird and deserve a close season. I hear all the nonsense about crop damage but to be honest decoying birds to field is not a very efficient way to keep them off the crop

I have said before and fail to understand why Mr Packham is not demonstrating outside halal and kosher slaughterhouses. Why you may ask. Law and legal enforcement. It is illegal to sell to non muslims or non jewish people meat from animals which have not been pre-stunned prior to slaughter. Halal meat is sold through many takeaways on the high street, indian restaurants like the one in Holsworthy Devon. There was an exemption put in place in 1933 which allowed the slaughter of animals without stunning for these religions but makes it clear that the meat from these animals is for the consumption, only of those people. Even our attorney general Geoffrey Cox QC MP agrees there is a point in law here but fails to enforce it. So some groups are left alone to break the law without penalty and other bonified organisation are bullied and because they are English they bow down and abide. And to all you hollier than thou out there from vegetarians to vegans, we all in the persuit of food kill numerous living things. When a field is ploughed for fresh vegetables, when a field is harvested, when we drive, when we walk, when we plant flowers in our garden. Its how this world works. Blue tits, wrens all hunt and kill and eat their prey alive. So to protect our crops and obtain some nice natural meat in the process must benefit all. Unless you want more chemicals and a hike in veg price?
