New materials are revolutionising rifles. The same carbon technology that's creating amazing new bicycles, tennis rackets and fishing rods has come to guns. Tim gathers together seven examples, from Browning, Blaser, Sako, Sauer, Mauser and Dane & Co, gives them all the once-over and looks at increasing his carbon footprint. We are also reporting form the Isle of Wight, where birds kill 200 lambs this season on a single farm - and now Natural England wants to release 60 sea eagles there. In his Smokin' Targets series, Ben Husthwaite has a simple tip for clay shooters: use your core not your hands when trying to get on to the target. Plus there's News and Hunting KZfaq in this week's #FieldsportsBritain.

I work on a farm on an island in northern Norway. We have about 500 lambs out in the fields and woodlands all summer. We are also surrounded by hundreds of sea eagles. In the seven years I've worked here, there haven't been a single sea eagle attack that we know of. They will of course scavenge already dead animals and are certainly strong enough to fly of with a dead lamb they might come across but it is extremely rare that they actually attack. I have heard stories about some eagles becoming specialised on killing lambs but those are few and far between they say. I wouldn't be too concerned about the release program but it will be interesting to see if the eagles behave differently there. Best of luck.

Surely if a carbon barrel "dissipates" heat better than a steel barrel it will be hotter rather than cooler? The touch test shows insulating properties.

I can remember when rifles were made of a material called "wood"!They also had black barrels. There was also a pointy thing near the muzzle and that was called a "front sight". About two thirds down the barrel was a u-shaped thing called a "rear sight" Those were the days, such nostalgia!

Great stuff tonight, a 45 minute bumper show. Although we all hear about the negative impact and get regular updates and Tweets about the immediate damage the GL debacle is having on farmers and their livestock is shocking. The avocet chicks being gone by lunchtime to blackhead gulls may or should have registered with the RSPB and its members but probably not enough for sense to prevail. On to Smokin' Barrels, great as always and reinforcing where we should swing from and use of the core will be studiously worked on and ingrained on the clays all summer until the first covey of the season bursts of the hedge in front of me, I panic and flail around with my arms again. As for Tim, his enthusiasm for everything is infectious and I have to say, having shot the K95 in 308, I have to have one. Can't justify it, won't be as practical as the R8 but there is something intangible that is so good and pretty and tactile, nothing else matters. Well, apart from the fact my wife would notice the significant depletion in our bank account. Great show and thanks again.

Cool rifles! Really like the look of the hooligan rifle! Sad about the lambs and the sheep though, my dad was a sheep farmer/sherperd when i was growing up so, but we never had any problems with eagles or other birds.

I think running carbon is all down to your size n strength and what's important is kick,, light is higher kick and heavy is more steady, more on point in my opinion.

It would be great if organised fieldsports would understand that ecosystems need their predators to remain healthy. That's not controversial. There may be costs associated with it, and that's just the cost of doing business.

Never mind extolling the virtues of carbon, get the basics right and set a good example to any novice viewers! Chambering a round in the "hooligan " rifle (12 minutes in) with the barrel pointing skywards would get you sent packing off most ranges!

With the lack of support for the farmers and their lively hood by the the politicians and bureaucrats and also the animal activists adding fuel to the fire, just watch their reactions when the price of lamb goes through the roof and their constitutes and supporters start asking why is the price of lamb so expensive, do something about it , the politicians and the bureaucrats will be dancing and singing to a different tune then!

As both a hunter and conservationist the country is going mad with stupidity, gernal license needs to be back to control the numbers of all pest species there numbers expand hugely year by year due to the lost native big predators that would have kept them at lower levels so we need to fill the void, as farming expands it enables these heavy breeders like crows and pigeons to expand, sea eagles is a toss up in my view they are a stunning bird of prey amazing bird but they act as one of few natural controllers of pigeons crows, the attack on lambs tbh by product of them, its finding the right balance for them to expand and grow just like they did with the red kites etc but in the right habitat not just random places they feel to let them in the wild, all going nuts all these morons need to be replaced with a well regulated and reliable data collecting body without a biased agenda

From somebody who works with carbon fibre for a living the quality of the workmanship of the browning is laughable. Visible cut lines, massive weave distortion and pinpricks in the finish. Not a good advertisement I’m afriad.
