How to load a muzzleloader with shot

Fieldsports Nation member Joe Wood is a muzzleloading enthusiast. He owns a reproduction C18th Brown Bess flintlock musket, which he likes to use for hunting rabbits and pigeons near his home in the Lincolnshire Wolds. Here he explains how he loads the gun with black powder and lead shot, enabling him to use the musket like a shotgun.

I did all my squirrel hunting this past fall with my flintlock Pedersoli Indian Trade musket, which is a .62 smoothbore. With 70 grains of FFG powder and 1 oz. of #7 1/2 shot it performed very well.

Have been shooting black powder muzzle loaders for fifty years, I still cringe when I watch and hear the over shot card being THUMPED down on top of the shot! When you do that, the soft shot gets miss shapped and can ruin the pattern, as does TOO many overshot cards, because they can put a hole in your pattern.

Buckn ball was used much also, some adventurers and scouts in America liked a double barrel gun, 1 barrwl smooth,other was Rifled, then it was one who fought many indians there,he had a Drilling, 2x smooth bore,1x rifled. That one must been interesting to use ,but much to care for .

Do you require a special licence for blackpowder/muzzle loaders? My father shot a lot of these back in his day, and I'd definately like a chance to, is this covered by fac or shotgun certificate as its smooth bore single shot?

For anyone else wondering, I did a quick bit of research, it seems you need FAC and to be part of a registered rifle club/range, if anyone can confirm?

@@FLOOPC need an explosives license (for the black-powder), SGC if its smoothbore/FAC if its Rifled.

The soldiers trained this enough so that they could fire around 4 shots per minute, and while retreating behind the line to reload their next shot, another guy would be firing in their place. So it was actually quite a constant firing until the gunpowder smoke (also from artillery) blocked all vision. Then the cavalry and pikemen would charge with pistols and melee and all went into total chaos, until they regrouped from a signal. The best way to deal with a rifleman (or pikeman) unit was for grenadiers to ride a horse near enough and throw a hand grenade in the middle of it.
