I have an antique Muzzleloading Shotgun circa 1840 or 1850. Took it out shooting over the weekend and wanted to show how to load one. It takes a few different supplies, but is not that difficult and a lot of fun.

I carry a bandolier full of pre-loaded plastic tubes in a size that holds .410 shotgun shells. I do the right barrel first thing also. "If I load this thing Right then I'll have one barrel Left" is how I remember it. I just use one "Nitro Card" over the powder and then the shot, followed by a split (with my thumbnail) nitro card on top. This is just to speed things up when hunting doves. I've heard that a cushion wad sometimes gets some of the shot stuck in it and reduces the effectiveness of your pattern. Probably doesn't matter much as I've broken quite a few clays and dropped my share of doves. There's a guy by the internet name of "Sky Chief" who swears by using a thick lubed cushion wad on top of the load. All kinds of arguments on that! Just be careful and have fun. You sure get some looks at the shooting range! Thanks for the post.

That’s an interesting period correct wrist repair. I always loved seeing how they would repair firearms back in the day. Probably someone’s horse rolled on it.
@murphyfirearmstraining36302 жыл бұрын
The repair looks to be very old. I've had folks tell me it reduces the value of the gun, but I really like it. It is very well done.
@Bouzoukiellas2 жыл бұрын
@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 it does that is true because it is further from its original “mint” state. However, I’ve always found them to be extremely interesting and I know a lot of other people do as well. It would be cool if there was a private collection of antique firearms that have been repaired as such. Very cool piece.

Very informative. A tip - if you want to protect your nipple keep a tire valve cap over the nipple to prevent the hammer from falling directly on it.

What a well presented video on ML perecussion shotgun loading, well done. I've been competing and hunting with muzzleloaders for fifty years. What you are doing is just fine🙂. A wee tweek would be, cut the fibre wad in half and and then put another nitro card on top. The reason for this is, the lubrication could make some of the shot stick to it. Plus, the top over shot card is better if it is thin (as you said) but glossy too, it stops shot sticking to that as well.

Honestly being from Virginia and an avid hunter and being also into history/history of firearms and black powder it's never occurred to me that there were muzzle loaded shot guns before. I just saw it mentioned on the VWR website and came to check it out... now I want one something fierce 😅

They are hard to find, unless you buy a new one from pedersoli. And those are high dollar but very nice. If you enjoy Muzzleloading and shotguns, you will not regret it.

Thanks for your video and explanation on this. I have an old mule ear .40 cal rifle / 15 ga shotgun over under that belonged to my great great grandfather and I’m getting everything ready to shoot the shotgun barrel. Have already shot the rifle and worked good. Thanks again. Big help.

Equal amounts of powder and shot is called a square load and is a starting point only. Some guns will shoot it fine but in looking for a pattern that works for you or me try many different loads. Every shotgun is different. Not a bad video though.
@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. It is meant as a starting point for the beginner for sure. Hopefully it helps get more folks interested in Muzzleloading Shotgun.

I take it. It does not matter if you're left-handed or right. Handed with precaution, cause either way, you hold it. The gun's gonna have a cap in front of your face I have a percussion rifle. I have yet to shoot because I am afraid of the flash And you probably could just use paper for wanting. It might not be as accurate but it could be cheaper
@murphyfirearmstraining36305 ай бұрын
There is not enough flash from a percussion gun to ever bother your face. The biggest issue with a percussion gun is occasionally the spark will get your arm if you are wearing short sleeves. It's not bad and you get used to it. That's the biggest issue I have had with a double percussion gun.

@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Unfortunately, because of any anti-gun Doctor I am limited to muzzle loading, but then again, some muzzle loaders are more powerful than modern guns. Depending on what can you pick

I'm a old poorboy myself. I'm planning on making me a muzzle loading shotgun with 1" DOM tubing inserted inside of a 1" black iron pipe with a breach plug welded in the back and drill and tap for a 209 nipple. And build my own stock (40+ years carpentering I think I can handle the stock ) and only load light to medium loads.
@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Жыл бұрын
If you have the skill to build it, it sounds like a fun project. Just be careful with the first few shots. a 1" pipe would be like 4 or 5 gauge depending on the ID. They do make wads for that size. It would be fun to shoot!!
@williamcastleberry7338 Жыл бұрын
@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 The inside is perfect 3/4 ID , that's a 12 gauge if I'm not mistaken. The 1" dom tubing has a wall thickness .095 and the 1" black iron pipe is SCH 40 (ball park 5/32) The barrel wall will be somewhere around a heavy 1/4" thick
@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Жыл бұрын
@@williamcastleberry7338 3/4 would be 11 gauge. My gun in this video is 11 gauge. 12 is 0.729. If you used 12 gauge wads you would get some powder blow by. With that thick of a wall and black powder, you would be plenty safe. Sounds like a fun project.
@luciuschappell46483 жыл бұрын
Any idea what velocities you're getting with your powder to shot ratio? Would it be any different with buckshot?
@murphyfirearmstraining36303 жыл бұрын
I would like to chrono this load one day, but there are charts in my black powder manuals that are really good estimates. Should be about 1165 fps. Theoretically buckshot would go a touch faster because there would be less weight in the same size scoop because of the air gaps between the large pellets.

Good clear instructions but having had a friend injured recently by an unintended discharge from an un primed rifle the sight of the hand over the muzzle when pushing the ram rod home made my skin crawl.
@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Жыл бұрын
Was he shooting a lot and a hot ember ignited the powder? I would love to know more. When I shoot at more than a snails pace, I swab between rounds. That ensures no hot spots in the barrel.
@HaurakiVet Жыл бұрын
@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 That seems the likely cause. Most of us do swab between shots but it is generally the rule on the ranges that I use that the hand is never used to apply pressure directly over the muzzle. In the case of some patent breeches even swabbing is no guarantee of a safe load. This is the first accident of this type I have first hand experience of in over 40 years of BP shooting but I'm aware that there have been instances where a spark has set off the powder and the result, due to keeping the hand around rather than over the muzzle has only resulted in burns and a rather shaken shooter.

I'm taking a NRA course here in about a month from "basic" through to "instructor". Our instructor sent us this video. WOW!!! Now I'm hooked!!! Yes there's a lot to do with a LOT of "moving parts", but MAN this looks like fun!!!!! The only question I have is you mentioned a delay when firing. How much of a delay are you talking about?
@murphyfirearmstraining36309 ай бұрын
With a clean and functional gun it is a fraction of a second, but if you are used to modern shotguns you will notice it. It is enough that if you don't follow through you will miss a moving target.

How well does the over shot card hold after the recoil from the first shot ? I'm planning on shooting one and was going to use the cushion wad as a over shot wad till you cleared this up. Also I plan on using plastic shot cups to keep the shot tighter together, I read this on some black powder forum sounds like a good idea, any thoughts on that . Thanks for the video .
@murphyfirearmstraining3630 Жыл бұрын
I have used plastic wads, but they don't do as well in my gun because it is an 11 gauge. If it was a 12, I would use plastic wads all the time. They will get you a tighter pattern for sure. The overshot cards in my experience do a great job keeping everything packed tight and I have had no issues with recoil loosening the shot column in the 2nd barrel.

@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 I have everything needed for a 20 gauge that I got about two months ago, and just purchased a twelve gauge last week so as soon as I get some weather that matches my days off I'll be trying the 20 gauge, glad I viewed your video, the only shot I have now is .00 buck, will be getting some 6 shot as soon as my friend runs another batch. My 20 is a Pedersoli and the 12 is a CVA and I just found some negative thing on the CVA hoping that mine was produced in 1985 from what I can find on the serial number I think it's in the clear.

3 drams (what I am shooting in this video) is 82 grains of black powder. That is a very low load. I wouldn't hunt with anything lower. Otherwise you might not develop enough velocity to be lethal.

Dear comrade, how much ammunition do you recommend for pigeon hunting?
@murphyfirearmstraining36302 жыл бұрын
Depends on your skill and how many you think you will get. For dove season in the US, the average hunter fires 3 - 5 shots per bird. I always take more than I need. The worst thing is to run out of ammunition before you are done hunting.
