@Maitre Mark that's what they call footsies in a fighting game move in and out of range to bait an attack... atack whiffs(miss), then punish(counter attack)
@mamertvonn4 жыл бұрын
@Marrowbones I'm talking about movement, not edge preparation. 2D fighting game have a very linear blocking system. Always Block low and block high by reacting to a 0.4s overhead. Parrying are clearly more complicated since their 3 types of parry But in terms of movement... watch a SFV or maybe just SF4 tournament, just one match there are different phases in a game >Neutral (when everyone is far away and out combo range) >Up close(when players are near each other... exchanging attacks and turns depending on the person who has priority in his attack) Now watch closely in the Neutral situations, it may look similar The only diference is the unrealistic power to shoot out fireballs. Commonly used for space control

@Marrowbones Video games (particular esports) take years of practice to get good at too, like most skill based endeavors, so it's not like they are dismissing the complexities and practice that go into this sport when they indicate that it reminds them of such. There is absolutely no need to get irritable over it. Also, fencing is practiced by people of various skill levels and ages, and that's not a bad thing.

@@jonathane6859 don't watch fencing then, you won't find that here. Fencing is a sport, not a sword fight. You'd be looking for rapier fencing, a HEMA art which emphasizes not getting hit over hitting your opponent first. They also use sport versions of swords, literally just blunted swords with the same weight and tension. You'll find more of that there, and you will especially find what you were looking for in Polish sabre, where clashing of the sabres is very common.

If there is one thing I learned from this, it's that maintaining the distance (Bodoczi did so by making his stance somewhat more leaned back) greatly helps win the fight by opening counters.
@otakuleveledup84584 жыл бұрын
The problem with leaning too much it limits your movement if you miscalculate their reach too much. We don’t do it that much as the benefits of moving slightly outweigh the negatives but it is not hard to do and almost instinctive for beginners so I can see why it was done for many centuries. Movement is key but in HEMA if you want to be historical do both but remember there is a reason why it died out so do it in conjunction with movement in comp (please note, swords were not used that much until duelling became popular in the renaissance before spears and bows were go to picks unless it’s a duel or showing wealth so we took a long time to learn to use it well for UNARMED DUELS it maybe different in different contexts)

Okay I tried watching foil and then sabre, and this is definitely the best as a spectator sport. There's actual back and forth action in this, in foil and sabre each round was over in literally less than two seconds. The only way you could even tell who won was by their mask flashing.
@ryanforget86566 жыл бұрын
Jacob Hoss HEMA is WAY more interesting than normal fencing. you should watch it.
@OceanHedgehog6 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. Epee basically has no rules - whoever gets the first touch gets the point, and if both hit, both get the point. As a result, epee fencers are trained to avoid getting hit, either by parries or by footwork, hence there's more back and forth. In Foil and Saber, there are rules about "right of way", so as long as it's your "turn" to attack, and your attack is successful, you don't care about being hit.

Sorry, I forgot to mention this in my first comment, but Jung is rarely in control of this bout. Bodoczi controls both the tempo and distance throughout most of it. Jung makes up for the distance at times, but tempo he only did on I think two touches. It's hard to win a match, no matter what hand you fence with, if you don't take control of it.

French grip in my opinion in epee isn’t good
@matteovignolo70554 жыл бұрын
@Henlo I'm 170cm and used both pistol and french grip. In my experience there isn't a better of the two. Just the one that suits better your fighting style. When I was with the pistol it was more of a traditional type of fencing (mostly counter-parrying and calculated attacks). The French grip for short people is in my opinion for more advanced fencers. The french grip will give you a bit more reach but not nearly enough when fighting against taller guys. When using the french grip my master taught me a very unconditional type of fighting. At the end of the day however, the better fencer is the one that can prepare his/her attacks better aka winning the mind game. Little tip for counterparrying here I don't see it being used nearly as often as it should be, make sure your opponent attacks you exactly when you want him to attack. This can be achieved by suddenly changing your tempo and leaping forward just enough to make the opponent think he can touch you but far enough so that you have the time to parry the attack.

@kertaspaper94 In a nutshell: FOil and Sabre have limited target area (body, head), and you have to deal with an incoming strike before returning your own strike (Called Right of Way). Foil is point only strikes, and sabre allows edge strikes (slashing). Epee dispenses with all of this and is first person to touch the other with the point of their weapon wins the point.

I've been looking over fencing matches and a bit of strategy over the last couple of days in an attempt to glean some useful information I can transplant to a different game and fortunately I believe it's working. Understanding tempo and feints, you can tell what a player is likely to do based on the speed at which they're acting and the type of actions taken. For example, the Japanese fencer was moving at a high tempo in the beginning of the match and was beating the blade. You could tell immediately that his intention was to draw out nervousness in his opponent, and place him in a defensive mindset. You could also tell the German player was maintaining composure and waiting for opportunities to strike himself. This culminated in a kind of waiting game where both players are anticipating the next strike, and you can feel the tension rising to its climax while the players exhaust themselves of all patience. So they dance and dance until the time to strike "is about as good as any." Then they strike. It doesn't ALWAYS play out this same way but when these conditions are met you can see it coming from a mile away. And as far as this match goes, it happened more often than not. Granted I'm not a fencer. Before yesterday I hadn't known anything about fencing at all. And so what I'm getting at may or may not be obvious to those familiar with the sport itself. But that isn't of interest to me as I'm just observing from a perspective of human nature. Trying to see what can be anticipated in a game I know nothing about to figure out new ways of anticipating in a game I know much more about.
@rb-55824 жыл бұрын
Very good observation

flameace50 It is far from boring if you are participating. It's actually pretty nerve-wracking. I go to a club that teaches all 3 weapons and sport saber is my least favorite. It feels like whippy sword-tag. The types of touches you are allowed to get with a sport saber wouldn't do jack with a real blade, plus a real blade would be significantly heavier and impossible to move like sport sabers do.

Both blades are the same length the closest target is your opponent's wrist, so height, is really no advantage.
@logosao885 жыл бұрын
@@kentgardner8836 In theory yes, but the wrist/forearm is a small target (and moving). Jung would love to have picked away at Bodoczi's wrist/forearm. But how often did Bodoczi adjust distance suddenly as Jung was closing in order to make his epee point travel up the arm (to the shoulder) of Jung? It's easier for a taller fencer to angulate over a smaller fencers arm. I wish it wasn't but it is. I'm almost 5'10"; and I struggle mightily with taller epeeists who fence similarly to Bodoczi (even though they are much less skilled overall).
@matteovignolo70555 жыл бұрын
Logos AO stay very far away (a reach that he thinks he can hit you, but he barely can’t) and induce him to attack you from that distance, whenever YOU want to be attacked. It must be your choice when he decides to attack (you can do this for example by changing your rhythm. Start very slow and suddenly make a quick movement while still maintaining that distance I said before). Be ready to parry (if you are good enough, do it without going back) 2nd strategy: since these guys don’t give you the blade, show them that you are still trying to hit their blade for a couple of times (obviously you won’t hit the blade but that doesn’t matter). Repeat this so that you induce him to think that you want to hit his blade before attacking and then all of a sudden hit him in the knee. (Because his sword is close to the knee he won’t notice the change and will still think you are trying to hit his blade 3rd: I assume you are shorter than your opponent. Lure him into attacking you and then crouch down while keeping your sword straight (no need to move backward or forward while you crouch, just make sure you do this really really fast. 9/10 he will attack you to the body and this way, he will not find a target to hit. (When you crouch, you need to get really really small to minimise the chances of him hitting you) I hope this techniques will help you a bit. I have more of you are interest but then you’ll need to give me more details about your strengths

Wayyy more entertaining than Foil Fencing. You can see how the blades clash off one another and it actually matters when they connect! But still not quite as interesting as most HEMA Matches. Their stances are still too open, and their bouncing is very indicative of techniques made in an environment where getting hit doesn’t matter. Granted, getting hit doesn’t matter in HEMA Either, but the techniques taught were used in real duels, where being hit with a sword meant *being hit by a freakin sword*
