@GriziDaWiz
@GriziDaWiz 4 жыл бұрын
Bouncy I find epee to be the more exciting to watch, the type of fighting you are thinking of is probably only fantasy of twirling blades and cutting heads off with one swing while parrying five swords in the same swing, if you aren’t thinking of this then I am sorry but too many people think what they see in fantasy is how it was really done and say fencing isn’t real sword fighting but a pro fencer could kill a pro ‘hema’ fighter all the same.
@adandyguyinspace5783

OsibGaming HEMA isn’t fantasy, it’s down and dirty sword fighting. And I’ve done HEMA before too and I agree with the school of thought that Olympic fencing isn’t real sword fighting, ergo, it doesn’t have the look of a medieval weapons fight like HEMA does. This is also like saying that Olympic TaeKwonDo isn’t real TKD because it takes away 98% of the techniques in authentic TKD. And before you say anything, I’m a 1st Dan in non-Olympic TKD
@GriziDaWiz
@GriziDaWiz 4 жыл бұрын
Incubus I’m not saying HEMA is fantasy I’m saying people probably think that sword fighting is what they see in the movies and games, I know HEMA is real sword fighting but so is fencing, it is just because we are not allowed to hurt each other we have no way of telling who hit first reliably since we use the buttons so that means yes it could be a light scrape that would realistically do nothing but that’s the trade off, I suggest you watch epee if you want more of a duel and yes I do agree that hitting each other at the same time a bunch is not sword fighting realistically but it’s their game.

Do any of you people have any idea how sabre works? Its not "real" swordfighting. Its not meant to look appealing to those who don't understand it. Its a sport of incredible strength and speed, both mentally and physically. There are rules in sabre, specifically the right of way rules who determine who get the point (always favors the attacker). Its a sport, just like how boxers don't really try to kill each other, fencers fence to play the game, not to look flashy or land killing blows.
@willhaney96
@willhaney96 5 жыл бұрын
Boxing is a sport in witch you attempt to disable your opponent while protecting your self over a period of time. Fencing is a suicidal leap at your opponent in the attempt to hit them first with next to no regard to what will happen to your self in the next 0.1th of a second.

Time and time again, I am amazed on how people react when something (whether it be a sport or movie or anything else that people have a preconception about) doesn't meet their "standards". "Oh fencing's not realistic... dafaq their blades doing, they are so whippy?, why are they in straight lines, why not circular arenas?, why are they not defending, they would die in a real fight" And worst of all- "this requires no skill" Every sport has rules, and if you don't understand them, I suggest you learn them or move on rather than posting on a KZfaq comment thread about how this doesn't fulfill your preconceptions. Would like to make something clear also, This isn't Historical(classical) Fencing, just like how Archery evolved, so did Fencing. Fencing is a Modern sport, not historical. When I say Historical Fencing, I mean Fencing designed to kill and was used in warfare a centuries ago. If you want to watch Historical Fencing, well first off you can't (because people who were historical fencers in the truest sense of the word are all dead), you can watch the next closest thing with things like HEMA or things like Historical Fencing in plays, both of which are quite interesting to watch. Last note, please don't compare two sports up together and say one is better than the other. That is just blatant disrespect to both sports and people who state that are completely arrogant and narrow minded.

@dudeofvalor9294
@dudeofvalor9294 8 жыл бұрын
+tontalo With Sabre and Foil you have the rule 'right of way' or 'priority' essentially the same thing. Now priority is established by the person that extends their sword arm first. As Sabre is a slashing and stabbing weapon, you have a wide variety of attacks which are very hard to deal with. On top of that the target area is from your head to your waist and includes your arm (this is normally were a horseman with a sabre would strike when fighting on horseback against someone else). So you see, if both fencers do not charge at one another then one who extends their sword arm and then moves down the piste establishes Priority (right of way) and is more likely to score a touch. So in an duel, you have a few choices to make. Do I attack? If so were am I striking? If not do I look to parry or evade their attack? This is just three questions that then lead onto so many more. For every question there is an answer and for every answer there is a question. Never say fencing does not require skill, you are totally wrong. What you should do is try it, against someone that is good and see how hard it is.
@MathStringInputOutpu
@MathStringInputOutpu 8 жыл бұрын
+tontalo why defence when you can attack? offence is the best defence. and there is defence. sometimes it shows one hits the others blade before makes an attack. that is called parry reposte, which is essentially defended attack and strike back.

+John Loal People have every right to call this stupid, there is no such thing as sanctity of sport. Sabre is stupid, hoops and clubs in rhythmic gymnastics are stupid, synchronised swimming is stupid, the winter biathlon (skiskyting) is stupid. Do they require immense amounts of skill and years of training? Yes, absolutely, but it doesn't make them any less niche and pointless. Besides, other sports like skateboarding require similar dedication, are FAR more entertaining to watch but for some reason are not Olympic sports.

It is true that sabre is not realistic but if you know the game then you can appreciate what the fencers are doing. Sabre is not for everyone. In my opinion, while none of them are really that realistic, saber is the most realistic. When someone cuts at you with a sword, you need to put something up to defend yourself, so right of way makes sense. Yeah it sometimes ends up with people just trying to hit the other person’s sword to get back right of way, but it is better than nothing. Also only being able to attack the upper body makes sense as any part of the body is good to hit, but trying to hit the legs is very risky and not very rewarding (compared to the head or torso), so it would make sense to discourage it.

@matthewpham9525
@matthewpham9525 4 жыл бұрын
Jesse Collins It’s pretty easily the least realistic. Foil has right of way, but it has a method of determining whether or not a hit has sufficient killing power. Saber has no such rule, a brush to the lame with the side of the forte is treated the same as a decapitation. The saber itself somewhat unrealistic, being lighter than real ones.
@jessecollins3652
@jessecollins3652 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Pham What is foils measurement for killing power? A foil is far, far lighter than a small sword. Also saber doesn’t have pistol grips.
@matthewpham9525
@matthewpham9525 4 жыл бұрын
Jesse Collins The 4.9 Newton’s required to depress the tip is analogous to skin penetration. Smallsword weights vary greatly, many of which fall into foil weight. Sabers do as well, but it is exceedingly rare to find one as light as an Olympic saber. As for pistol grips, there have been historical grips that have the same function as pistol grips. Foils can be mounted on a French grip anyway.

I can remember first stepping inside my brother’s fencing studio and the first thing that went through my mind was “Haha beekeepers lol” but then I actually started to fence and yes, I do admit we look a bit silly but going out there and having someone charge at you full speed with a sword takes guts. This sport is super fun and even my brother, who has asthma, can fence and loves it. Saber was never aiming to be a replica of real sword fighting and thus it does look a bit different. I know we look funny and “it’s not real sword fighting” but that doesn’t mean that these people aren’t incredibly talented at what they do.

Yes, that is how it looks. In saber there almost no skill required to actually hit your opponent, but the timing, speed of footwork, and feel for distance must be perfect. There is no room for error, or you get hit. I guess you actually have to fence to appreciate the skill required, but believe me, there is a huge amount of it here.

I'm a HEMA man, but this is actually quite entertaining. It's not "real swordsmanship," but it IS difficult, exacting, and I can see the discipline, athleticism, and skill needed to do it. Also, I love the passion of the Koreans.
@TinyGiantBird
@TinyGiantBird 9 жыл бұрын
Correct, actually. In sport fencing, the three disciplines are called basically everything but swords, and mostly referred to as "weapons". The reason being is because the root of the word "sword" eventually means "to wound". This is not the objective of sport fencing, so naturally it would be inappropriate to refer to it as "swordsmanship". Nevertheless that stops no-one from using that word.

@president camacho Isn't hema focused on self defence though? I'd say a martial art that focuses on keeping you alive as opposed to scoring points by pretending you're invincible takes more skill to both defend yourself while also trying to wound or kill your opponent.

To all the historical fencing and HEMA fans, including me, I know you don't like this and that's ok, but still these athletes worked their lives for this sport, so let us have some respect for that. I know, this is not sword fighting, because this is not a combat simulation, they don't even use real models of sabres like we do in HEMA, but that's because this sport is simply a different thing, so don't just rant about it and have some respect.

Hey love this I do fencing but I always dreamed of doing HEMA I always thought fencers and HEMA could live in peace because most of us do both haha but they are very different but similar its strange but both are incredibly challenging and both should be respected there isn’t any HEMA places near me so I am booking a private session for a treat (:
@midshipman8654
@midshipman8654 Жыл бұрын
yah, but it was a combat simulation originally. all the little things that make it the way it is today are there expressly because people gamed the rules of the older days to the point where it became largely unrecognizable. and is it any better really because of it? now its harder to follow for a layman, the fighters barrely have to parry or repost, and it doesnt simulate fencing much. I dont know if these elevate the sport in any substantial way. I can respect the fighters themselves while also very much being critical about the actual rules.

If you've never fenced, don't comment on the sport. That would be like complete newcomers to chess commenting on whether chess is actually like real combat strategy: Of course it's not. And secondly, if people think it's all about speed, go look at some of the touches kim gets in the first matchup. He didn't just stumble backwards and get a lucky touch. He planned and baited everything out. These guys are inhuman both physically and mentally at this sport.

The thing is that there is the problem: That to a casual observer who can't appreciate the finer details sport fencing just looks like two people who are both dead, since the first thought most people have who know nothing of it is: "what difference does it make if someone had RoW or struck faster, they both just got struck?". The main exception is parry specialists, like the hungarian medalist, these are guys who can be appreciated by casual observers because they tend to get very obviously clear hits that look visually impressive on the replay.

The other comments like this requires no skill .it does require skill its just not the skill used in a real sword fight but nonetheless it require skill. I just don't get why we all can't get along wether we come either from hema,sport fencing or somewhere in the middle
