"With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything's far away. Everything's a copy, of a copy, of a copy." As someone with insomnia that line always stuck with me. It's weirdly accurate.

0:08 how tf did they portray the visual perception of the insomniac so accurately in this shot? It's subtle, but those true insomniacs who have been severely sleep deprived will resonate with that shot. The dissociation, the weird fucked up depth perception, the flat and fake appearance of one's surroundings, like being in a constant dream-like state mixed with a drunken stupor. This scene, and this whole movie, is a masterpiece.

@@wifegrant your comment brought me back here, and I just feel it's important to state that my insomnia has greatly improved since I wrote this post, and I'd suffered for years with it. So don't give up. To anyone reading this, your insomnia can go into remission as mine has. I'm still not a great sleeper and I'm prone to disregulated routines, but if you really work at it you can get much better. When my mental health gets bad I end up going without sleep for months, but as long as I take care of myself I can achieve _some_ semblance of normalcy with my sleep.

In the last 3 weeks, I’ve experienced REM sleep for roughly 14 hours. People start to seem almost distorted, giving them an “uncanny valley” effect. The "Fight Club" movie, directed by David Fincher and released in 1999, features a memorable scene that deals with insomnia. The film is based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel of the same name and stars Edward Norton as the narrator and Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden. The scene you're referring to is one of the early moments in the film where the narrator's insomnia is depicted. In this scene, the narrator, whose name is never revealed in the movie, is portrayed as an insomniac living a mundane and unfulfilling life. He's exhausted, suffering from chronic insomnia, and trying various methods to cure it. He visits support groups for various ailments to help him sleep, but he remains unable to find any relief. The visual and auditory elements in this scene are crucial in conveying the character's state of mind. The camera work and editing create a sense of disorientation and restlessness, mirroring the protagonist's mental state. The sound design also emphasizes his insomnia, with an unsettling score and ambient noises that add to the discomfort. Edward Norton's performance is noteworthy in this scene, as he effectively conveys the character's desperation and frustration. His monologue about the emptiness of consumer culture and his longing for meaning in life sets the tone for the film's exploration of existential themes. As the film progresses, the protagonist's insomnia and his encounters with Tyler Durden lead him down a darker and more chaotic path, ultimately culminating in the creation of the underground fight club, which becomes a symbol of rebellion against modern society. The insomnia scene in "Fight Club" is a pivotal moment that sets the stage for the film's exploration of masculinity, consumerism, and existential crisis. It's a haunting and visually striking scene that leaves a lasting impression on viewers.

I like the bit where he goes through his flat showing the names of the products therein. I think that reality is like that, as I think Mach and Buddhism said. We are presented with our sensations and we extract and isolate "things" from within that continuous flow which we then name. The artisanal glasses with tiny bubbles, and the copy of a copy of a copy, is based upon Jean Baudrillard's "For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign." Something I noticed is that at 1:46, when he's talking about waking up in strange places, the doctor dismisses this by saying "You need to lighten up". Thinking a bit about it, it's a bit of a strange response to someone having spots in their memory (especially when that sentence alone could have warranted further examination). Then I realized that the narrator is looking straight at the camera while saying this - he's not looking at the doctor until 1:55, which makes me wonder something. The narrator doesn't look off in other directions when talking to people, he's always looked straight at people when they talk, but Tyler has a tendency to look somewhere else when talking. Mentioning that he has narcolepsy could give Tyler away - if the narrator got medication for himself then he could suppress Tyler without him even knowing he was there. Because of this, I believe that the narrator is NOT saying this line to the doctor, but that Tyler gains control for a second to say another line to make the narrator's issue seem less intense - then gives back control in that split second.

everytime i come back here. there is a deep cycle going on in my life. aswell as change. shifting and unshifting. human beings are so flawless , priceless, unique, their limited, primal minds cant even comprehend the amount of detail, & precision that goes into withholding their existence, & the order of reality. shiny object syndrome, and monkey mind thinking and feeling, they cant open their minds beyond the binary, the dual. but the yin yang is one circle, you cant have wholeness/harmony without light & darkness, yet (to no fault of their own) they seek to make everything "light" not realizing if they let go of that effort they would realize a higher light. this is just the flow/channeling of the infinite. yes nothing is in your control, yes everything is in your control, both those statements can be true at the same time, tho they defy logic. you must be open to accepting that their are higher intelligences then logic/thought, but they must be felt. You are attention /or energy. concentrated into a form(body) yet their is the formless (water) which has no form, meaning it can change and become anything. it is not bound by anything. it simply adjusts itself effortlessly into the needs of the present moment. your mind is like water , or it can be rigid, if you are not open to change, to flow.

TL;DR "The narrator" dubbed "Jack" by fans played by Edward Norton, whom the perspective of the movie was filmed from was Tyler Durden's alter ego. Tyler creates Jack when he was 6 years old to deal with the loss of his father. Jack was the sound of reason to a totally lost boy and eventually a man (Tyler). Jack had the personality "it will all payoff shortly". Tyler was someone who was fed up with life and eventually decided to take drastic measures and take back control. Tyler thought throughout most of his life that being Jack would make him happy and believed Jack would have a happy ending.

I'm dealing with insomnia all of a sudden, kind of in the middle of a breakdown lol I sleep three or two hours a night, cannot bring myself to sleep I just pass out and then have to be awake for work lol I'm not even groggy the next day like in Fight Club, I have to be 100% focused for work, so I just kind of nod off for split seconds every few hours lol

This scene has been helping me cope for that last few days. Night shift insomnia is so painful. The only way i can force myself to sleep is to get drunk, but i know it's very short term and i shouldn't do it. I'm so scared, i can't figure out how I'll get back to normal. What if I'm always this way??
