Luke is a newb. He's going to have bad form. Vader is a cripple using fake limbs. He's going to have bad form. And we don't know how heavy lightsabers are and how they react to eachother, plus the Force is involved. Vader is toying with Luke. It's ALL understandable.

With a movie from the 80s, saying everything bad is supposed to be that bad deliberately would probably give the movie too much credit. But look fighting in a flailing style and Vader casually blocking with little effort probably is deliberate. It just makes perfect sense for the characters in that scene. I think this is a case in which the best that they could do just happens to be good enough for what the scene calls for. The question is if they could have done much better if they had wanted to. Which based on the next fight in Return of the Jedi I think they might not.

Whenever I go up against one of the instructors, I'm very focused doing a proper stance, looking to attack but also ready to jump back at a moment's notice. @Thecommander248
@Thecommander248 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think Vader is telegrapging so much at the end not because he is serious or because he is toying with Luke. I think Vader is doing it to force Luke to block, scare him, and to finish off what is left of Luke's stamina and endurance. He doesn't want to kill Luke, but Vader has plenty of strength left and Luke whittles away to nothing by the end. Vader is trying to break Luke mentally and physically, so I think this works very well.

Keep in mind, especially towards the last part of the fight, Vader draws his strength from strong emotions like anger and hatred. That last part in the weird tail rudder thing always looked to me like Vader is just trying to wear Luke down, it's less about finesse and more about brute force, similar to what Luke does at the end of RotJ. Also, I realize this might be giving the screenwriters too much credit, but one possible explanation for some of Vader's mistakes, is that he managed to more or less judge Luke's skill and physical capability and he allows himself to do stuff like this because he knows Luke won't be able to exploit the advantage properly. That would explain why it's mostly happening during the middle and later part of the fight, Vader starts with small, calculated movements, toys with Luke, then as soon as he does the wide baseball bat power swing, he realizes Luke isn't good enough to actually notice when he has the advantage and use it, so he takes calculated risk, betting on intimidation and wearing down his opponent, rather than actually having a proper sword fight. Or I am just rationalizing it because I've been a Vader fanboy since the first time I've seen that text crawl xD

I really love how it took about 5 seconds from Luke landing that strike on Vader's shoulder until Vader cuts Luke's arm off and ends the fight. I think that, more than anything else in this fight, really shows how much Vader was toying with Luke. It seems like Luke genuinely pissed him off and he wasn't having any more of it, so he finished it in three moves, which he clearly could have done from the start if he wanted to. It really lands just how powerful and intimidating Vader is imo.

Most people don't understand that Bob Anderson not only choreographed this fight, he also *was* Darth Vader for this fight. Same goes for the throne room fight in RoTJ. IIRC they also had to be tricky with the camera work to make some of the scenes work, as well as Bob had to wear partial stilts to keep up the established height difference between Luke and Vader. Imagine having to do this fight while being in a clunky suit, while wearing a mask that limits your vision and breathing, while also wearing stilts. It's a miracle the fight scene turned out as good as it did, and is testament to just how good the team was that worked on these movies.

"All too easy." You can _hear_ the smile. One of my favorite things about Vader is how his most potent weapon isn't the Force or his combat skills, it's _intimidation._ His mere presence makes makes his underlings practically soil themselves when he shows up, and the only time he _doesn't_ dominate the room is when the Emperor himself is there too. This entire fight was pretty much Vader toying with Luke, establishing his dominance and demonstrating just how wide the gulf between them was, and basically putting the fear of God in him.
@VinVonVoom

This is also one of my favourite things about him, among many other things. Weirdly enough though, I always found Dooku more intimidating. Maybe it's because of Vader’s sheer star power to the point of parody but I always felt Dooku intimidated his opponents in a more compelling way. He feels like a real person with a ridiculous amount of skill that will destroy you at will. His physical presence is so much more refined and casual. What's funny is that in both of these in which they're at their most intimidating they're essentially sparring against their opponents.

Also: towards the end of the fight. Vader knows that Luke is no threat and just is tiring him to exhaustion. Thought the weight of the light saber doesn't add force he is still exerting himself through force use, etc. Vader knows Luke can't swing the blade fast enough and is not skilled enough to stop a "True Vader Strike". So he telegraph's it.

The main thing we have to remember about this fight, is that Vader isn't trying to kill Luke so he can turn him to the dark side, but Luke is trying to kill Vader to avenge Obi wan, aunt, and uncle so it makes sense why Vader wouldn't take advantage Luke's openings. Luke's openings and mistakes (eg not taking advantage of the saber lock) make sense because Luke isnt skilled at sword play. Luke was basically hoping he could face Vader and win, but went to save his friends even if he died trying. You can also tell that Luke is terrified the entire time. "Why did he turn his lightsabre off?" Because they glow, and hum, and he's being stealthy. Vader turned his off for the same reason. Also, that part where you suggest that Vader has the extension to remove Luke's limbs, he actually doesn't, it's just the perspective that makes it look like he does. At the part where Vader surprises Luke, and he starts telegraphing his swings big, that's the part where Vader's getting mad. That's why his swings get very crude, because he's mad, and he's letting his emotions get the better of him. Luke gets his hit in because of that. But it also has the effect of causing an already panicked Luke to start getting desperate. "Is this a legitimate instance where armour does its job?" Yes. Vader's armour is comprised of a multi-layered cortosis weave, able to deflect even lightsabre strikes, but not forever. One strike, yes. If Luke had take another swing or two at the same spot, Vader would be missing an arm. Again. Also, you'll notice that he hits an actual armour pad, but there are places on his armour that are not so well protected. Stormtrooper armour is much cheaper, and able to protect against small arms fire, but not so much against military-grade weapons. This is because the Empire prefer to mass produce as cheaply as possible, relying on numbers more than tech, and they don't expect to be facing a full-scale military resistance. The rebellion being as well equipped as it was was not something the Empire was prepared for, or even accepted, because that's what hubris does.

@@brigandineofdragons373 in the lore (not Disney fanfic lore btw) they are entirely disposable. Their armour is intended to intimidate more than be functional, because the Empire 'had no equal' to challenge it, or so the Empire thought. @@brigandineofdragons373 I really don't know why people have so much issue with stormtroopers. If you look at what soldiers have done with projectile weapons throughout history, it takes a surprisingly large amount of ammunition for a single hit. For example in the American Civil War, it took somewhere between 75 and 90 fired rounds for a single hit. In the World Wars with higher rates of fire and the use of suppressive fire, that number goes up even more. If you do a search online for stormtrooper hit percentage, it's actually a relatively high 5-10% in most movies, going as high as over 30% in Episode III (due to the amount of point-blank backstab shots).

The cute thing about this fight is that any perceived error can be laid at the feet of characterisation and character motivation. As Shad mentions many times, Luke is a novice who doesn't really know what he's doing. His lack of skill with the blade is understandable and obvious from the moment he over-commits and Vader simply pushes him off balance. But despite Luke's many mistakes, Vader isn't capitalising on them because he doesn't want to kill him, so it's equally understandable that he isn't taking advantage of Luke's failings to cut him down. Again this is clearly shown from the beginning where Vader is nonchalantly fighting one-handed and just accepting Luke's attacks without really returning them. There's this strange dynamic where Luke is trying to kill Vader, but lacks the skill and experience, and Vader has the ability to kill Luke, but doesn't intend to. It's a recruitment drive, not a duel. Of course Luke continues to resist, so Vader ramps up his attacks throughout the fight. It only gets really dangerous when Luke manages to score a hit on Vader's armour, which causes Vader to stop messing around with this kid. Literally five seconds later Vader takes his hand and his weapon to bring the fight to a close. The choreography isn't just about two guys swinging at each other. It serves a higher purpose. It tells a story. For that reason it's my number 1 choice for Star Wars Lightsaber Duels. The one thing I did double-take on though was 27:46 where Shad said they didn't have anyone who knew functional swordsmanship. Er ... they had Bob Anderson, an Olympic Fencer and Olympic coach who spent his life studying the blade. He was perhaps the most respected sword choreographer in movie history. He doubled for Vader during this fight. The guy was responsible for choreography in films like Lord of the Rings, Highlander, Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean and many more, but also used the blade competitively and taught others to do so. It's hard to think of who they could have used who was more qualified in functional swordsmanship.

Fencing isn't functional swordsmanship.
@Rekaert
@Rekaert 6 күн бұрын
@@xingyuzhou1891 There's a grain of truth in that, but it's mostly incorrect. Put a sword in the hand of a trained fencer and one in the hand of someone who hasn't trained, and the outcome is not really in doubt. You'd soon find out who has 'functional swordsmanship' skills. Whip a duelliest out of the 1500's who's been fighting for his life and put him against the fencer, we may have a very different outcome, but that's not simply a matter of skill and knowledge, but also experience, or how 'battle-hardened' one fighter is. It's no secret that battle-hardened troops perform better than thoroughly trained recruits, yet they've both had the same training. The difference is one has been fighting for his life, the other has not. Similarly, put a modern HEMA guy against a knight from the 1400's who has seen battle, and it's probably going to be a bad day for the hobbyist. We can recognise that real duels to the death aren't happening as much as they were in the 1500's or 1600's, making it harder to recruit such a person for movie fight choreography, whilst recognising that fencing in the modern day has a hell of a lot of transferable skills to a real duel, incorporating functional skills. Technique, footwork, strategies, tactical mindset, athleticism, speed, coordination, blade-feedback, attack angles and distancing are all invaluable in a duel, and a well trained fencer will be great at all of them. That said, Bob Anderson wasn't just an Olympic fencer, and he wasn't just a fencing training and fight choreographer. He was a man who had studied the sword all his life. He had studied not just the sport of fencing, but how sword play actually worked in real scenarios, as he had a real passion for historical sword play. This was before HEMA came along. The man had a thorough knowledge of the blade, but he also knew what looked good on screen, and how to adapt functional technique in a way that was cinematic for an audience who may not understand the subtleties of what they were watching. Like I say, it's hard to think of someone better qualified, frankly.

5:23 Mace Windu says it best in _Attack of the Clones._ "We're keepers of the peace, not soldiers." Blasters make a lot more sense from a military standpoint, but you can't use a blaster to deflect fire off a diplomatic official, and pulling out a blaster in the middle of a failing negotiation doesn't have the same psychological impact of hearing VRRRMMM as a shaft of plasma ignites from seemingly nowhere. Lightsabers were intended by the Jedi to be used as tools of focus, symbols of office and then, finally, as weapons of last resort.

@@inlikeflynn7238 A great question! For Sith (before Rule of Two, at least), it may be a matter of pride, like the way a more snobbish medieval knight might avoid using weapons of the "common rabble". Lightsabers could've been a social tool or status symbol. After the Rule of Two, it's notable that most Sith *didn't* use lightsabers that often. However, they would of course do so when fighting Jedi, as blaster bolts would likely just be deflected right back at them. Then, of course, there's the fact that so many Sith are former Jedi, and the lightsaber is just what they're good at by this point.

There's so much Luke can do there but he freezes in his decision making, and pays the price for it. really sells the final duel in 6 where he simply jumps out of the disarm altogether, as if he's done nothing but replay his loss over and over in his head looking for better ways to counter it.

Vader overdoes it and nearly loses an arm, yes, but that's the point where he thinks "Enough is enough" and takes the hand to end the fight. Basically, at worst, Vader got cocky. @@jonathancampbell5231 Another possible explanation is that by the end of the fight Luke is clearly exhausted and since Vader is very strong, he might be afraid that exhausted Luke won't be able to hold a blow even if he blocks it. In the old now non-canon canon, lightsabers are magenetically constrained spinning plasma, and when they bind, they are tied together at that point so you can't slide like you can two pieces of metal. Also, the spinning gives off a lot a of centripetal force, so there actually is an "edge," supposedly one of the reasons an amateur can't just pick one up and use it since it will try to bend out of their hands when they attempt a strike.

I know of a movie from the mid-80's that deserves a look - Ladyhawke. It is about a knight and a lady who are cursed to take the forms of animals - she a hawk by day, and he a wolf by night - which of course complicates things for a pair of lovers.... even more so because they'd been cursed by a jealous Bishop (movie's 35 years old, I can spoil who the BBEG is in it), who desires the lady, and wants the knight dead. The pair eventually enlist the aid of a pickpocket, who had escaped from an escape-proof prison, in order to get their revenge upon the Bishop. Now, there's more than a few fight scenes, and while it's rough by today's standards, there's still plenty of good scenes. In an early fight, our hero gets his sword stuck in a mook's body (as the knight had once been their captain, only for the current captain to shove said mook onto the hero's sword for daring to call him "Captain"). Our hero, instead of wasting precious time trying to pull his sword out of the body, uses a number of punches, elbow blows, and throwing folks around - shoving one of them into a door that is - grabbing and throwing horseshoes, and then grabbing a good-sized piece of burning wood to use like a club, all in order to clear enough space for him to be able to get his sword, give a bit of respect to the dead mook, and then clear away. Towards the end, our hero, and the corrupt captain, engage in hand-to-hand (sword) combat on horseback, in a church! and when one falls off their horse, they take off and throw their helmet at the other, before resorting to just grabbing the guy off of their horse. Overall, it's a decent movie for the time. Of course, one should pay a moment of respect for Rutger Hauer, who passed away last year, a veteran of many movies and TV shows, having played a lot of anti-heroes and villains, for playing the Knight in Black Armor in this movie, plus some of the others who have since gone onto the Big Theater in the Sky.

@ANTOINE RAFAEL R. MAXIMO Before Disney started in on Star Wars Beskar steel wasn't a thing. Also, Vader didn't deflect blaster bolts, he absorbed the energy. You can see it in the scene where the bolt hits his gloved hand and does not deflect away. This is clearly stated in the book I, Jedi by Michael Stackpole which is a book about Corran Horn who is a main character in Stackpole's Rogue Squadrom series based five years after RotJ and Horn is the main protagonist and discovers during the liberation of Coruscant that he is descended from Correllian Jedi, and I, Jedi kind of retroactively inserts him into the Jedi Academy trilogy which is Luke's first attempt at training Jedi on Yavin. So... I'm calling a Disney foul on "Beskar steel" in Vader's armor. I can't remember which book it was in but I believe Vader's armor is described as having filaments of a very rare and energy repellent fiber of some sort layered into the several layers that comprised his armor. Shadows of the Empire comes to mind as one that might have described in a little more detail the specifics of Vader's armor. I'm not sure, but seeing as how that book took place between ESB and RotJ and heavily features Luke immediately after the fight it's probable that it's addressed there.

Honestly that whole post was done from memory except I wanted to verify I had the spelling of Stackpole correct I haven't read any of those books in about 15 years or so, but the X-Wing series (first 4 especially) and I, Jedi, along with Shadows all got read 2-3 times each back then. Those are some of the better EU or "Legend" books. Corran Horn was a really cool character. The Jedi Academy trilogy wasn't nearly as good but featured the main characters in the movies as main protagonists, whereas the X-wing' series didn't. It took maybe five minutes tops to type it up correctly. (Grammatically I mean.)

What's funny is Luke has legitimate Plot Armor! He's lightly trained but Vader needs him alive. This means any hole Vader could exploit to make a kill is off the table handicapping him. Yoda even tells Luke he is not ready and if he goes now he could die, but Luke feels he has no choice because Han and the others lives are in danger. It's like the Storm Trooper joke and missing. In the Original Trilogy Storm Troopers are shown to be competent shots and good at tactics and winning battles. When they miss like on the Death Star and Cloud City they're under direct orders to do so. Every missed shot and every death is part of the plan. On Hoth, Endor, and on Leia's ship they are exceptional marksmen. Feigning incompetence seems to be a popular imperial tactical. As for Vader over swinging in the end of the fight if you look at Luke you see he's covered in sweat, his fighting has gotten worse, his clothes are ripped. It appears Vader is more psychologically fighting with more strength, showing Luke that Vader can go all day physically but also his fighting has to be a bit more wild and telegraphed for Luke to be able to block. His intent is to intimidate Luke into surrendering. I think the point is Vader goes a bit to overboard with to much confidence and gets tagged in the shoulder for it. Also Mark Hamill talks about how since the prequels Lightsabers behave like flashlights but in the original trilogy they were told to act as if the blades were heavy or attracted to each other like light magnets. Finally as far as choreography goes I think they had a great deal of benefit that the lightsabers during filming were just sticks. This meant they could stay in measure and a missed block would only amount to a painful whack versus a dangerous strike by a dulled metal blade or tip of a real sword. For the lightsabers they are pretty safe as long as the strike isn't to Mark's eyes.

Han Solo: "Easy? You call that easy?" Princess Leia: "They're tracking us." Han Solo: "Not this ship, sister." On Besbin they are ordered to press Luke towards Vader, that means no lethal shots. Most of Luke’s bad form can be attributed to brashness and inexperience, and most of Vader’s bad form can be attributed to the fact that he is absolutely not taking Luke seriously. Actually because of a weird psychological phenomenon called the Dunning-Kruger Effect Luke is probably vastly overestimating his own knowledge base about lightsaber combat. It's not as extreme as the effect can be, but usually when you start out learning something new you vastly underestimate how much there is to learn about something. So Luke, eager to save his friends is probably over-valuing his own neophyte skills. So he might feel confident enough to face Vader, but that confidence is propped up by his own biases.

Good observation. Star Wars Theory has a good video explanation about why Anakin/Vader sometimes loses in fights even though he's suppose to be one of the better duelist in jedi history. Dark side rage heavily clouds your judgment. In the Mustafa fight, Anakin hated Kenobi so much that he wanted to use the same move Kenobi used to kill Darth Maul and Anakin got his legs cut off for it. You actually see him try the move on Kenobi twice during that fight. Another factor is Vader obviously never wanted to kill Luke. In most portrayals of Vader he dispatches even the most powerful opponents with ease. Even more telling is the fact that Vader could've just force choked the life out of him from across the room if he just wanted him dead.

A few points I want to make: 1. About the hit Luke managed on Vader, when you look back at the screen shot at 1:07:49 it looks like Vader was able to block Luke's saber with his own, so maybe Luke's hit was only a gaze, not a full on strike. 2. The second part of the fight Vader just abandoned all forms and postures because he knew how skilled (or unsklled) Luke was and how winded he already was so he just didn't care to be careful anymore and was just trying to scare the shit out of Luke, with all the hit on the walls and floors with flashy bangs. 3. Luke in this fight tried a lot of low strikes. When you think about it, it actually makes sense regarding Luke had been training with Yoda, and you know how tall Yoda was lol. Maybe it was just a habit.

I agree about Vader blocking Luke's saber. It looks as if he realized his mistake a little to late and just barely blocked in time. Plus I don't think his armor is what stopped Han's blaster fire earlier on, I think Han caught Vader off guard when he opened fire (Han shots first after all) and Vader just reacts by putting hands up Knowing that his cybernetics can handle some blaster bolts without harm to himself. The difference in those two moments is that Vader feels no pain when shot in his hands because they're mechanical, but when Luke strikes him he is noticeably in pain because his shoulder is still flesh.
