Just to give you guys the characters: 谷 That’s master gǔ‘s surname. 谷师傅, as you would say in Chinese. Master Gu actually did come out with a reflection on his performance, so I will translate it soon. Also, for those of you wondering why Xu didn’t take on the Master himself, Xu needs surgery to fix one of his arms, so Xu cannot really exert too much force right now. In fact, I forgot to translate this, but part of the reason Xu was able to get the Master to show up was he put up some money. He basically told Master Gu: if you can beat a student of mine, you get 100,000 RMB of money. So Xu basically put up the money he was saving for his arm surgery to get the Master to show up. Also, I have a followup video coming soon. The more I look at both Master Gu's social media, the more I see fascinating content to explain and analyze. Stay tuned!

Xu's rhetoric was about science and investigating martial arts using the scientific method, which helps backstop his stance against general negative response from the government. By claiming he's advancing the country's understanding of martial arts, it's harder to criticize him for going against traditional institutions.

Nah, its not a prize fight, for money, or some massive amount of honour involved, he went easy at first as he didnt want to fall to a lucky punch, he went harder after seeing he was winning easily and the guy was already dazed, he had the literal opposite motivation to what you saw, and to me its obvious. I think there is a lot of confirmation bias in how people see events like this, but watch again, the Tai Chi guy is dizzy from early on, has lost his balance, the thing tai chi guy should excel at.

I’ll choose anyone who has been in a street fight over someone who’s practiced the non-practical martial arts for years. A person who’s never been punched in the face before are usually in shock mode, and are either in fight or flight response, or don’t have the mental strength to continue. And this is from a jab. If someone was rocked from a punch, forget it. It’s 100% mental and emotional after that. The feeling is you don’t know if you’re gonna survive or not. In reality, people do. It’s just the mental challenge of feeling your brain vibrating is scary.

It’s the fact that nobody learns taiji’s actual combat anymore because so many people are obsessed with theory and fantasy other than actual combat and lose, I’m a practitioner of Wudang wushu or Wudang taiji and Wudang Quan, and I know it works but I don’t fight like people think it is used. I use it with common sense. Every martial art has there strength and weakness. That is why we must mix styles together and create our own mma. People mistake mma as specific style but in reality it is a idea of multiple styles, that is why Bruce Lee’s philosophy Jeet Kune do is the father of MMA because it was the first idea of mixing styles

@tom3413 for real, KZfaq is full of cringy comments or videos about street fights and how you can never prepare for one. Then what follows is pseudo expert conversations about nothing but romantic ideas of what a street fight is lmao. Also always at least one guy who makes a ‘no one can defeat my gun’ comment. About football players I do think they can make decent fighters though. I played rugby only a couple of trainings and that gave me an edge against my non fighting trained friends. Jon jones even said that he’s lucky his football pro brother never joined the ufc or it would have been over for him. I’m Not saying there aren’t football players that overestimate their abilities but they have potential imo. There’s a lot of people who overestimate themselves. Have seen footage of soldiers poorly fighting civilians on the street in their day off. False confidence is everywhere. On the other hand potential is everywhere as well. Have seen footage of cricket players fighting really well on the streets in self defense.

great to hear xu has become more diplomatic. this is the correct approach. when the facts are on your side, the fastest resolution is patiently and methodically working through the issues. younger people trying to navigate these conflicts tend to look for a quick solution, while also failing to realise they're not very good at negotiation. they also tend to be unnecessarily defensive, which manifests as aggression and fake confidence. xu has realised that he's holding all the cards, and it's a lot more fun to be nice to people

I find it funny that when arguing with a lot of these types of people they will say mma, kickboxing, BJJ, etc. are "just sports" and that if there were no rules their TMA would dominate. But when you actually see these challenge matches, they are the ones that request the most restrictive rule set possible! Lol. Because they inherently realize that getting rid of rules would help the so-called sport fighter more than it would help them.

Why is there never any evidence of the lineage, the schools where they teach, the credentials, videos of demonstrations etc?

I'm a Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut guy, that was already fighting prior to learning kung fu. My father and older brother were black and brown belts in karate. So i grew up on knowing martial arts as early as i can walk. So, when I first joined my teachers school, i knew how to fight and they were shocked because i was in there sparring them on the first day. But, looking like this older guy, you can see he never had a real fight in his life and he's only going on the notion that tai chi works, theoretically. but you can see, this guy has no guard, doesn't know how to move around, not dodging or evading. if you're going to take your martial art into the fighting realms, one, you need to know how to fight first. two, make sure your basic punches, blocks and kicks are up to par. three, SPAR. Spar light, spar heavy, and spar often. This is why i make my own students do and is the reason why we did well on our very first ever match in the Muay Thai community.

They should go gloveless, as the gloves give an advantage to the boxer for both blocking, and hand protection; it would likely still go down the same way, but it would show technique vs technique more readily. The self defense version of boxing is bare knuckle, and requires different techniques so you don't break your hands, which happens to a lot of boxers outside of the ring.

People are clowning but guys...This Tai Chi master showed great compassion and restraint by not using his internal Chi powers which would have permanently injured or even killed his young less wise opponent. It was clear from the beginning that the master realized that an exhibition fight, clearly for no reason other than ego gratification, was not a place to truly unleash his power on a defenseless and foolish young man. Instead he wisely and bravely chose to take a beating himself rather than cause irreparable harm to a weaker man. He also knows that if western people ever saw the true power of internal MA that they would begin demanding to be taught these dangerous techniques and that well, we in the west just aren't ready for it. Better to let them mock what they aren't ready to understand than to unleash a bunch of barbarians trained in the art of chi on an already suffering world.

Tai chi is an aerobic exercise…. It has nothing to do with fighting - it doesnt matter how good his ‘form’ is… the body mechanics are fundamentally flawed and will always end up losing to any conventional western fighting style… boxing and wrestling are true MA, everything else was MA fantasy with no context - For reference the boxer wasnt very good either… he was squared up 80% of the time, bad footwork, fell over himself and smothered his work - but the tai chi guy is so helpless… ive trained 12 year olds who could probably smoke this guy, honestly ive trained 15 year olds that will take out any guy trying to do tai chi - even with the correct ‘form’ - absolutely smashed.

I think what has been lost is the practical application of these arts. they have turned it into a dance and have forgotten how to apply the pieces in a fight, and have lost timing all together. I hope more masters explore this. relearn it. this master was brave and dedicated to getting in there and explore and be willing to find out what he doesn't know, what doesn't work. now go back and rethink it. play with it, adjust, and try again.
