Always wondered about this! And why are we already trying to move onto the 6th generation, when the 5th one is barely started!

Yeah pretty much the same reason that the 4.5 generation exists. Most countries have drastically decreased military spending. The exceptions being Russia, US and China.

F-22's are now OLD. Been around since 1997. You either innovate or go the way of the dinosaurs. You do not stay safe getting left behind the enemy.

of all the 6th gen fighters you missed the Tempest, primarily developed by the UK along with the swedish, italians and now japanese. Companies working on it will be BAE, Rolls Royce, SAAB, Leonardo and Mitsubishi. With SAAB immense reputation with their swedish fighters, UK and its post world war 2 reenlightenment in aero engineering, leonardo and bae with their world leading electronics and avionics and mitsubishi and rolls royce with impeccable understanding in engineering design. I think tempest could be one of the most noteworthy of the 6th gen fighters.Watch out NGAD

I'm pretty sure the F-18 Hornet had circular intakes while the F/A-18 Super Hornet has more geometrically shaped intakes. Also im very unsure about this but the F-18 may be land based and the F/A-18 is carrier based.

6th Gen Platforms will also field 2 less wings. The rear vert stabs will be angled, much like the YF23.

Korea, India, Japan and Turkey all are making a 5th gen fighter. Also SU-57 is a 5th gen fighter

My easy general breakdown: Gen 1 = Straight wings Gen 2 = Swept wings Gen 3 = Area-ruled fuselage Gen 4 = Fly by wire Gen 5 = Stealth

I'd agree somewhat with 1, 2 and 5 but not 3 and 4.

I hereby propose a 7th gen fighter jet by having the capability of targeting and destroying objects in Earth’s orbit with their weaponry. Being able to fly in space and atmosphere might be a plane of 8th gen.

4th. There's currently no EU 5th gen fighter. (Unless you consider the F-35)

Sad F117 noises…. Made before the 2000s, did stealth before it was cool Designated as F though its designed for attack Not a part of the teen series or the two digit club and instead is stuck with the F111 which is also awkward

in my opinion the F14 was were better then the F15 or F16 because every pilot ive asked always said there favorite jet was the tomcat over the rest

That's only anecdotal evidence. So can't go just by preference. You gotta go by raw data.

Tomcats are arguably better than F16's. The F15 out performed the F14 in every way apart from being able to land on a carrier.
