After all the parents that i've known from people's stories and their lives been told, I have noticed that most of these parents don't have much care for a next generation' future and they expect them to be advanced and smarter like robots, they never see us as a human being with likes and dislikes. Turns out most of these adults who have children of their own are just selfish and ignorant, which is worse.

I honestly don’t understand because I like drawing and my parents are always like focus on school and stuff so I usually don’t have time for drawing

I've been blessed with parents who love and encourage my creative passions and weird ways of thinking. Even with school (I grew up homeschooled by the way), my mom's choices in my curriculums have been made to work with my creative thinking. It makes me feel bad that kids would ever be discouraged from that creativity. :(

Grace Deocaris I can't speak for all parents, as some really don't support their kids unless they aim for generic stuff, but mine were aiming to help. Sometime you genuinely cant make a living with art. If you do, you either have to make it big or have multiply jobs. Being that I come from a poor background, when I first mentioned my artistic passions my parents told me to go for stem instead. Some parents fear that you won't be successful because of the stigma behind being an artist. Sometimes its a fear of you working your ass off and never getting results. Its a scary gamble, and for my parents their discouragement was mainly about stability of my future. However, they did try to be nice about it, saying it could be a hobby or stress relief, but shook their heads on it as a job. I tried to do both, school AND draw. Hell, I drew on a lot of my class notes, and any scrap paper I found. School, getting a degree, I did my best in those, but I wasnt going to let go of my dreams. I did what they wanted, but catered my learning to my passion to see how to use it for business; I'm going in for a degree that will help me hone my art, I take electives for public speaking/com tech so I can work on how to address people professionally or talk to clients, and I'm trying to learn more about how to handle money. I get stressed and I have anxiety, and my parents will probably never fully know to what extent either of those go to, but I know what I want to do. My parents are still unsure, but they feel a little more at ease knowing I'm taking this seriously. I'm not in a stem job, I'm doing my thing, and they still try to tell me to go for stem, but I value the reason why they rejected the concept. I would have never worked my ass off this hard or in this way if it wasnt for them. I know it's not the same for some parents, as mentioned, there are some genuinely shitty parents. But sometimes its important to consider that some may not be rejecting the passion itself, but just dont understand how you could turn that into a business, and perhaps never will. What is important is knowing that they want you to be able have a stable income and to hold yourself independently when they arent there anymore. And while it may not be the best form of encouragement, it's their show of support. Sorry for the rant. I just have some parents who rejected my passion, never have the time to sit down and understand, but worked hard to make sure their kids would push out of poverty. They currently arent not doing so well these days, and it just made me kinda emotional reading this. While it sucks to not have that straightforward support, I genuinely think some parents are just trying to look out for you, but may not be doing it in the best way, or entirely understand how much it hurts you when they say these things. Have your passions, but work hard. Cant be a passion if it ain't burning with intensity, so make it shine so bright that your parents can't help but acknowledge that its there to stay.

I believe you're gonna be a great animator, and I've seen people who became pro even without any college, it's just sheer will and patience, and one day you're just gonna show your mom your paycheck or/and patreon page and say "And who doesn't make money now???"

Kid, really, no offence, I understand what you are feeling, cuz I am personally sick of learning programming in university and also wish to become an animator, but life isn't that easy on dreams, really. Cuz really, I don't see an annoying, not supporting woman in your mom. She just tries to protect you from lots of trash the world will offer you when you grow up, and, believe me or not, money solves lots of them. We all talk so easy about money until we need them to survive. I am not telling you right now to give up on your dreams, no, you are the captain of your ship, but aswell don't underrate those people who really wants to help you to have a stable life in this world, even if they don't know how to do it right. Good luck with everything x)

She cares, but she's going about it in a very bad way. The only good point she could have made is that, due to how tough the art/entertainment market can be, you may end up needing a job outside art to support you until art can become your main gig. However, you can get a bachelor's in art and get lots of different jobs. It's the bachelor's degree that will matter most, not the area of study as much. What that says to employers is that you were smart and disciplined enough to finish college, which counts for a lot!

Bestie what do we have the same parents???? Lol jkjk, but seriously, I 100% feel you pal. When I told my parents a couple of years ago I think I want to be an artist, they had the exact same view. And though I get that they want to protect me, all that it’s done is pretty much completely discourage me from doing art and put a lot of doubt in myself, along with making me not want to do the one career path I actually would have want to go through. Now at this point I think all I can be is an accountant :/:/:/. But yeah, you’re definitely not alone in this👌

I’m sorry. Parents are sucky like that sometimes :/ Honestly grades don’t matter in the long run… it’s not like your employer in however many years is gonna ask you about that math grade in grade 6 or any other grades for that matter.

People always say to draw realism but a very common path artists take is to go into animation and character design, and no big animation and production companies focus on realism because they market to kids, plus, seeing a realism cartoon would be off putting

Don’t listen to them, having a job you don’t enjoy sounds like it would be awful. Do what you like to do, as long as you’re financially stable, I don’t see a problem.

If you're a grown adult and can support yourself independently, I don't see why you shouldn't just go for it. Whatever it is you want to do. You don't have to live by your parents' ideas for your career. You may want to start using that degree you worked hard to get for a start, unles your interests have changed.

Same, my mom is always talking to her friends about how I want to go into animation and design, and bragging about the techniques I use and how i'm constantly studying art, reading these comments seriously make me feel so bad, so many people are being taken away from huge opportunities. It makes me feel lucky. I hope more parents understand to respect their kids' career path decisions.
