I did this aptitude test for the Navy back in 1968, its still basically the same , at Biggin Hill (RAF side) there was about 400 of us . At the end of the 3 days full of testing, only 4 of us passed as fit for flying training. I was one of them and yes the tests were quite difficult , mainly you needed good hand eye coordination and able to absorb information at the same time. I didnt join the Navy but went on to be a commercial pilot anyway.

Multitasking while piloting isn't that hard. Do one thing at a time beginning with the most critical task. If you become task saturated, eject and tell the accident review board there was a funny odor in the cockpit.

Aviate, navigate, communicate. That's usually the order, but it's a lot harder in the air when a bunch of information is being thrown at you at once. Just the aviate part when doing an instrument approach is hard enough in busy airspace if, for example, ATC gives you an approach procedure you need to do for the airport. You need to pull out the right approach plate while maintaining SA on the traffic around you, listen for traffic calls from ATC, acknowledge any radio traffic being directed at you and so on, and then fly the correct profile. And if there's a reason you have to abort, you need to know what you're doing or anticipate what you might be told to do at least (what are local course rules, what will ATC likely tell you to do based on traffic/weather, etc. and then be prepared to have ATC tell you to do something totally different). Instructors will always say, "don't get behind the plane", or something like that. But that's hard to do when you're trying to read your instruments to make sure you're at the right spot, speed, altitude, etc. per the approach plate and then making sure you're not going to run into anybody, while making sure you're listening to and talking to the people you need to all at the same time.

okisoba Aviate is bad enough whilst under g, with a missile coming at you, and avoiding flying into a hill. Aviate, defend, navigate, attack, communicate, keep breathing in and out, dont get caught is more like it in anything dangerous beyond training. The aviate bit has to become instinctive to multi-task at that level.

The idea of the test is to train the pilots in the least amount of time and investment. In reality however, poorer test performers just require more training and I’ve found that if pilot training is augmented with 2 hours of robust computer simulation for every 1 hour of cockpit time, a superior pilot performance is achieved....especially in combat tactics. Spacial orientation training in robust computer simulators helps reduce the Duffus Factor that poorer initial test scores indicate a student may be prone to. For example, properly executing a defensive maneuver as a wingman when under attack and protecting the leader then converting the defensive maneuver into an offensive attack and take out the attackers. There are several data points in that maneuver that can be trained into a student either in the air at a cost of $100-X or in a robust computer simulation cockpit augmenting air time, at a cost of about $10-X. And the longer and broader the training syllabus in situational awareness on the ground, the better the performance in the air during multi-tasking. The best aircraft and cockpits are designed to be flown by idiots flying by the seat of their pants and forgiving of mistakes. Probably that’s why I’m still around...Sempre Fi.

fighter pilots are not selected on multi-tasking only. That is why she said she should apply and do all the other tests. They test how much stress you can handle, your ability to predict movement, how calm you handly things, how you prioritize, your memory capacity and such. Maybe she is average in this area, superb in two others and handles stress really well. Then she would probably be chosen because few people are above average in all areas. You want a good mix

TheKiwibird- Nearly everyone can fly-given enough time, but the military want the best, therefore they have strict criteria as to how much time is allowed for each phase of learning. This means that they don't want a good mix. They want people who are above average across the board.

There is on YT a quite lengthy video about the training for the RAF, starting with interviews for selection and all the way through to assignment to a squadron. It is from the 1990s IIRC. Interesting to note that of those who passed selection, those who appeared the least likely to succeed actually did rather well and vice versa! Obviously the initial selection process is rather a blunt instrument which can weed out only the grossly unsuitable, and all these tests end up as fairly meaningless.

When the RAAF switched to this system instead of testing on actual training aircraft (ct/4) the fail rate in training dropped significantly. Anyone can fly a fighter jet, its more about finding the people who learn the fastest, which is what these tests are about.

Gotta laugh! This entire built world and all in it has, in the main been created by men, multitasking like crazy over centuries! This myth of women and multitasking has been created only since the advent of feminism as a propaganda tool for their cause! Like men, not all are good at it, but some are. As for flying, and with 30 years experience and thousands of hours, it all comes quite naturally to most, in the air with training. As stated in the video, it is about doing what needs done right now and knowing what needs to be done next but can be left for the moment. IOW priorities.
