Fighting for Their Cat

The plaintiff, a mother and son, became homeless after getting evicted. They asked the defendant to take care of their cat until they found a new place to live, but they claim the defendant refuses to return the pet. They’re suing for emotional distress. The defendant argues the plaintiffs checked on the cat only twice over the course of four years. She thinks she is entitled to keep the cat. The defendant is countersuing for pet care costs.

What is wrong with JM today? His interrogation is rather harsh. He's being real simple, acting like shelters are not dangerous. Many homeless people prefer the streets rather than the shelters for quite a few reasons. Some homeless people have issues, like not making the best decisions. The difference between them and some of us is that we have more protective factors. JM is acting like these people did something personally to him. WHY? Edit: JM, the plaintiff wasn't talking slick to you, he obviously has some challenges.

This is one of those episodes where you can clearly see that Mathis is out of touch. Those shelters are a dangerous place and constantly full. There are many people that chose to sleep outside instead of the shelters. And it's funny how he was about to go in on the pastor until he realized it was an acquaintance. One that has a Mega church with homeless members that has to depend on other members for a few dollars and nights rest. If the pastor is that busy and the church is that big shouldn't they have a department or ministry to help the members? Why do they have to go directly to him? And we still have yet to see the problem. Smh
@marsbarsxo
@marsbarsxo 9 ай бұрын
While his ruling was correct I agree he's out of touch with this point. I had a God brother who, before coming to stay with us, would rather be on the streets or even in jail than in a shelter. As a teen/young adult he would commit petty crimes just to have somewhere safer to sleep for a few nights. Besides the fact that they're dangerous they also have ridiculous rules and will kick you out sometimes for no reason, even without your belongings. Also hate that he always wants to say turn to the church, those mega churches bring in millions of dollars and a lot of times don't care to help the congregation.
@jadasenior7958
@jadasenior7958 9 ай бұрын
I was thinking the exact same. I work with non profits and shelters and they can be very dangerous. To say it’s better than the streets just shows how out of touch lol. As well as the church point some churches help but many don’t have the resources to help

@@camiluv84well, it’s not abandonment if they tried to get the cat and the defendant denied them. The shelters u have to deal with thievery, rape, bullying and corrupt shelter staff. The plantiffs seem...off, the son especially seemed hostile from the beginning. Not sure if they're just mentally not all there or there's drugs involved, maybe that's why they couldn't get a place of their own. Four years is too long to leave an animal with someone. I just watched a Judge Judy case similar to this and her ruling was the same. Pets are considered property in the law, and if you abandon your property for years there's no reasonable expectation that you'd get it back. Hopefully the plantiffs are doing better now.

The courtroom deals in law not feelings, and that's a good thing cuz your logic is unreasonable. You cannot abondon anything in life and expect to just "get it back" because you finally ready. They gave no contact about that cat for 2 years and no financial care except $200 dollars. And the way they talk, they'll be on the streets again. So the cat is in the right place.

Judge Mathis was absolutely correct in his ruling and Judge Judy would have ruled same way. Pets are property in the eyes of the law. You don't leave your cat for 4 years and only visit twice, not sending $$ monthly for feeding, vet care, but now want it back, nope! It doesn't work that way.

Unfortunately I laughed when the plaintiff started crying saying he was homeless. When Greg asked how long. He said 3 days. Me and Greg were thinking he was going to say at least a month. I think mom and son have some mental challenges. Which makes me sad. It's tough finding a job like that. I hope they have been diagnosed with something. So they can apply for SSDI. That will help them with free medical insurance and around 700 bucks into their account every month. I know healthy people who have taken advantage of the system when they don't need it. And people like the plaintiffs. Who really need that check are left out.

Plaintiffs were either addicts or became addicts during their time kn the streets. I say this as a black man. Ol boy was running game the moment they started talking trying to add more days than they initially were homeless and just the way they went around things as a whole. They also left out some pretty damning information like WHY they were kicked out which was...not paying the rent due to a,b,c etc. Also they never stated what theyre occupations were that allowed them to pay rent or how they lost it? Just were very vague. And for those who say that the lady shouldve returned the cat thats abit ludicrous. 4 years, lady spent 4 YEARS of her time caring and loving that cat. Shoot I'd have found it odd that shed be willing after 4 years.

I feel bad for the plaintiffs however they clearly abandoned their cat. If they stopped payment due to the landlord not fixing things why didn't they have funds for a new place or a hotel? Although they clearly abandoned their cat the defendant should give it back and they should pay her for food and pet care fees. Honestly the defendant seemed hell bent on keeping the cat since she was never available for a visit.

Judge Mathis should know that YES Shelters can be more dangerous than the streets. They often fill up fast and don't allow just anyone inside. Poverty is a Horrible thing...
