The best time to start training in martial arts or combat sports is a long time ago when you were very young. The second best time to start is right now.

Age is actually an interesting topic. Studies say that testosterone levels are droping the older you get after your primetime in the twenties. So many people and even doctors explain with this the loss of physical fitness and health. And here comes the interesting point: other studies showed that testosterone isn't droping in older people who maintain a fit and heathy lifestyle. It's our society, you're right. People get married, get kids, don't have much time left besides work and give no f*** about themselves anymore.

Same thing with metabolism. It’s “common knowledge “ that our metabolism slows with age. But more recent studies show this is false. Our metabolism seems to slow with age because we stop moving and lose muscle

I read somewhere that for every extra pound of fat that we carry we have a mile of extra capilaries to carry blood. If that's true I can see why obese people die of heart attacks. That's a lot extra work for a pump to do 24/7

I'll add a couple rules. 1) don't get hurt - biggest mistake the older athlete makes. You get hurt you can't recover and there goes your training. You see lots of BJJ guys with shoulder separations, busted ACLs, tendonitis, neck injuries, fused vertebrae. What's the point? Join a BJJ class of older people and play easy, catch and release. 2) be consistent. Don't worry about intensity, duration, but emphasize consistency, frequency and don't miss workouts even if they're mild. 3) beware of weekend warrior stuff. that's when people in pretty good shape get hurt. Good video from Mr D.

I would recommend swimming for everyone. If someone wanna do something for core strength, while having fun... Bouldering. Bouldering is a nice additional training for MA's It is more like playing in a sandbox with all the benefits. But for "slightly" obese persons it should just hiking like Ramsey said. Do not bother with walking, running sprinting. Just go out for a hike. Maybe 5km But do not snail around. Push it a "little" I am no athlete, but I have a pretty good speed while hiking. The brain acts so different during hiking. When I am alone with me in a forest hiking, I imagine me in superior positions in real life. In my thoughts I "AM" the Rocky or the Rambo. No one would tell me other. Do it!

My master called this The Second Prime. he said you can keep it going with proper training into your 60's. My dad has not stopped working a day in his life. he still does heavy yard work, and he lifts more weights than me. he's almost 70 and has HIV and has beaten skin cancer and lymphoma. When he gets up in the morning as long as he keeps moving he can work a full work day And when he stops he sleeps like Odin. He has 0 viral load and healthy. And this is a man who as far as I know has never seriously trained until he was told he had to beat cancer. He has just worked hard as an AC Technician and taken care of his family. imagine what someone who has trained their entire life.

I totally agree with you Ramsey - I too was faster and could run faster and get less tired. But I stop any kind of training for 15 years, suddenly I felt I am going down getting fat and weak, I thought its ageing - it is actually because I am not active at all, sitting all day. IT took me 6 month of nonstop training (judo/weight lifting) to find my strength I am stronger than I ever been tbh. And yes I have energy, but I have to rest to recover etc, but hey np tbh :)

I think a healthy mix of dedication/listening to your body helps here. I used to do a lot of martial arts as a kid/teenager. Then got more into lifting weights. I’m now 30 and since finishing in the armed forces have gone back to martial arts. Soo I turned my 4 day split into a 2 day split in terms of weights and I train martial arts 4 x a week. At the moment my feet are hurting developing tougher skin for Muay Thai, hands hurt from rolling. So the plan is to slowly add a 3rd session when I begin to get used to the pain/movements again.

May I endorse with an anecdote the idea you put forward at minute 16 about daily exercise? About a year ago I (age 65) started walking with a couple of friends for an hour around sunup. We take a different route every day so that we see different things, but once a week always go up watertower hill. The first 3 months we needed SO MANY EXCUSES for stopping as we gasped our way up the hill, but gradually that stopped and now we get to the watertower barely breathing hard. It is so motivating to have an objective measure of progress (plus friends)! Also, before I started this habit of daily exercise, I used to drive to the grocery even for a few items because it was too far to walk; hiking back with a bag of groceries sounded crazy. But now? I wear a pack, and up to 20 pounds of groceries on my back just makes me sweat a little bit in the home stretch. It gives me a feeling of joy to start the day with this accomplishment, it saves gas money, it re-connects me to the neighborhood I walk through, and it enables me to live more ably as I age. Thank you for this video!

Y'know, if you're not busy. I really like the point that most of our training is NOT like the Rocky montage and takes a shit ton of repetitions! I go through a few dozen kicks and combinations most every day and I'll throw 100 jabs each 5 different ways all in one go - and none of it looks cool. But dear god does it feel cool when I steamroll my opponent.

I've had a lot of problems with my faith in training, and a lot of it has been wrapped up in... pretty much split evenly between my age and my obesity. I do keep getting up and going back to it. But I do keep letting it fail and be interrupted, as well. It's like I've got half of what I need of it, the half that says never give up but somehow not the half that says never stop. I mean that's a bit of a language twist and you could easily call the other thing giving up but you get what I mean, right? Things like this can help, reminders that you can be not-young (36 in my case) and you can not only still go but peak above that in potential too. Really enjoying watching your videos, there's a lot of insight. Even stuff I know already, is easy to lose hold of without reinforcement.

well, ramsey, i think that after wathing this video i can now call you my coach. thank you :) i've tried to summarize your teachings and i've concluded that you were much less systematic on talking about "intensity" and "well-thought-out plan" principles than about the consistency principle have you already talked about those principles in another video? if not, could you explain what exactly you mean by "intensity" and "well-thought-out plan" the same methodical way you did when explained the "consistency principle"? fitness is an act of faith: principles for if you wanna be a physically fit * consistency: rule n.1) do something: something is better than nothing. "i gonna do this no matter what" rule n.2) do something that you enjoy: if you do not enjoy it, you'll not do it. "i love lifting wheights and because of that i train everyday" rule n.3) do something that you enjoy that works: nature loves efficiency, it gravitates toward the easy way; being big and strong, looking like a sprinter, looking like a bodybuilder, looking like a fitness model is not efficient. "if i want to look like a specif kind of athlete i need to train like that specif kind of athlete" * intensity - when we do the work we get the result - the reason we train in the gym is to instill new insticts, better instincts in our muscle memory - you do the work in the gym and you get the result: you train your muscle memory, you train your body to move without thinking because in a fight you don't think. you take a punch you stop thinking real fast, you start reacting, so you have to reprogram that reactions * well-thought-out plan - faith is believing in something that is true: if i exercise faith and i believe that i can do this by doing the work beforehand to build up to that point, it will happen * 5 principles that determine how we function: - how we move: you need to exercise - how we eat: what we eat has a direct, immediate effect on how we perform - how we breathe: breath and movement are intrinsecally conected; we will only move the way that we breathe - how we sleep: go to bed early, wake up early, get plenty sleep in that interval; make sure you sleeping space, your bed, is a dedicated place for sleeping - how we think: as a man think so he is; if you don't believe it's not gonna happen

It gives you the sense of mooving in 3 dimensions, up down spin roll in the air, and you ALLWAYS know exactly where you are how your body is positioned, where is the ground... i did it from start 10 to 14 years old, then helped me with combat sports, a lot, and following sports until today, i am 62 still training.

I was reading that people who do marathons actually recover lost cartilage in the knees. Personally I hate running and I've always landed really hard, so I've been trying to run closer to how Ali moves in the ring. It's helped me to be able to do it without destroying myself.(not that I do much anyways since I really hate doing it, which was part of the problem)

I was 40 years old, i was and i still lazy, but something i quite enjoy is walking, i also include climbing stair rather than riding the lift. If my jointures (and bad leg) hurt me more, i do half or a quarter, it helps, one of my goal is to be the less out of breath during ''normal" excercice. For overweight persons, i also strongly advice to nautical activities, swimming, aguagym or aquabike.

Very true, in my profession (IT sector) it's very common to see people in quite suboptimal health state, or people in their middle age who use their family as an excuse for not making time for exercise!

You should definitely continue to record fruitful monologues again, good sir. These are the finest catalysts for me to achieve a balanced insight on martial arts as a whole nowadays. It would be a pleasure to listen fresh recordings again. Applauded!

I started Martial Arts with JKD and Kali then moved to Muay Thai. I was 20 I am now 32. My training has changed now that I am older. I train smarter not harder and I can not understate the importance of good nutrition and a good nights sleep.

I used to play football and basketball when I was from early to late teen. I also used to do lot of stupid physical shit (like jump down from high wall) like most kids at my time. My joints now are half ruined (I think my past activity played a major role in it). People, please choose your physical activity carefully.

A rather amusing story about my dad was at his pool hall, there was a guy who was roughly my age, and he finished military boot camp (he's a marine reserve). My dad was able to out-perform him in pull-ups, push-ups, and running. My dad was 60 at the time, and he looks like a skinny computer nerd. Also, he was able to do a push-up on his thumbs. Of course he admitted that those quick competitions were simple, but he could not do so every day like the other guy did.

I am 76. Boxing gym and weight gym. A 83 year old body builder is in my gym. So, I change routines. Boxing and related exercises. Since the crisis lockdown I added training gear at my house. Then weight gym and heavy work. My gyms are open now. Another day walk, jog, sprints at my very nice park. (There is a video of 100 year old man running and sprinting). Also, there are hills around my town. So sometimes a good climb. Anyway, change routines. Work out for a sport you like. Watch these videos.

I do stupid stuff, like weed whack my entire front and back lawns, but it provides a bit of endurance and your arms a strength work out. I'd be fascinated to know what movements the Taijichuan person used, if they were different than usual, or was he just well conditioned and reacted in a superior way.

that's funny. I had slight knee inflexibility. After running, my knees got flexible and lost any pain, swiped away any knocks I got on knees from judo.

Yeah, in my first day of training, I made the mistake of going too intense. That caused quite a few shoulder injuries down the line. So, yeah, start light, stay consistent, and progressively overload overtime! 😃

I was in a bar many years ago. A punk started in on a much older man sitting at a table. One of the people I was with stopped me from interfering in the dispute. The younger man was standing in front of the table and the older gentleman asked the younger man if he wanted to limp for the rest of his life. The younger man looked down and saw a beer mug right in front of his knee. Lesson learned, experience makes for a efficient warrior

I like swimming for exercise. Uses quite a bit of the body, very easy on the joints, and you can easily exhaust yourself... Plus swimming is enjoyable.

Hey Mr. DEWEY. I know you respect the Sabbath day but is Sunday the last day of the week? If So Monday is the first day correct? I'm only asking because the original sabbath was on Saturday, but it's been changed to sunday due to catholic power. If u don't believe me that's fine but I figured this would be something interesting you could look into.
