Number one in the cocaine market, earning more than 53 billion Euros a year, the 'Ndrangheta is the most powerful branch of the Italian mafia. Their members are enrolled young into this huge organization, seen as a family to whom you owe loyalty.
From extortion to drug dealing, the Ndrangheta is involved in many businesses around the world. Heavily armed, the organization has a stranglehold on the Calabrian economy.
We meet the rare and brave few that are fighting against the organisation and accompany the police on the raid of a port and the arrest of a ’Godfather’. A look at the Mafia which has a stranglehold on Southern Italy.
This documentary was first released in 2015.

The difference between organized crime in Italy and gangs in US is that Ndrangheta use violence only if strictly necessary. Its reputation and the use of threat are enough... Enterpreneurs, politicians and normal people fear Ndranghetisti. In US drug related crime and violence are higher than in Italy because there are fragmenting criminal gangs. In Italy organized crime do not want exposure to extensive media coverage: Ndrangheta clans are characterised by deep blood relations and this characteristic made the organisation virtually impenetrable (collaboration with Police is strongly limited). Then do not forget the strong collusion with local politicians and the fact it is no longer just a violent gang running local rackets and smuggling drugs, but it has mastered complex financial operations worldwide.

There was a coke smuggling operation in the UK which successfully imported tons of coke into the UK from the South America cartels using a unique method.. what they did is hid the coke inside massive lead blocks. Lead being virtually impossible to scan, the hollowed insides were hard to detect by scanning or sniffer dogs. The weight matched perfectly and the lead was so thick it was hard to drill without specialised equipment. The operation managed to get about 3 or 4 imports through, before UK Customs inspectors decided to drill into some of the lead blocks and discovered many kg of coke inside The operation was so big and well organised it was later discovered that some Customs officials and even very senior police officers were being paid off by the smugglers, as initially the guy responsible got away with it and carried on to do more shipments. Due to corrupting the UK justice system and police, he fled to the Netherlands created a new identity and buried his money in his backyard but due to UK intelligence, serious crime police and Netherlands police and European Interpol all working closely, he was captured and the drugs money dug up by the police and seized.

15 years is the max? What a joke.
@ClaudeMagicbox
@ClaudeMagicbox Жыл бұрын
15 years is the max simply for "Associazione mafiosa" or "connection with a mafia organization". On top of that you get specific years for the crimes you commit within that associative framework. For instance if you are a drug currier that simply moves stashes on your plumber's van (example) from the port to a stash house you get 6 for possession and intent to distribute, 8 to 12 for international trafficking because the drugs came from abroad + up to 15 because you do in association with a mafia organization. It's "up to 15 years" just for knowing and/or frequenting the wrong people even if you commit a minor crime like theft of a car... you risk 5 (aggravated burglary) + up to 15 if the Prosecutor can prove you did it on the order of "your friends" who incidentally are part of a mafia clan. We are the only country in the world that has such a harsh specific sentencing just for knowing somebody or going to his/her wedding party buddy...if you had this in the US you would not have the entrie world's mafia organziations infesting the whole country like they do. 🤗 Let alone that for this reason most of the mafiosi on the long run pile up so many felonies that they all end up with multiple life sentences (notice the cops with those piles of papers before the raid? Those are the number of felonies that have are about to be contested to the guys they'll capture later... basically a stack of warrants for each one 😅)

@@ClaudeMagicbox The Mafia is a shell of it's former self here in the states thanks to one law known as "RICO" Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. It's nearly but not completely eliminated them as a source of crime. You have so many little clans to deal with as well as corruption in Rome (Andreotti is a prime example) you need a law like this more than ever.
