@@RedmondsCorner In Scandinavia -> DK. I need a figure skating specialist, due to the lack of someone like you around these parts. Or I didn't look well enough? It's not a household sport though. I had my lower Master/Drop pick shaved off at a seasonal and recreational hockey outdoor rentals for fun and families. Out of curiosity. Do you do online paid online guidance? I would like to know if my skates/blades are fitted me well. Or know anyone around my part of the world that you can recommend? Anything would be great.

@@RedmondsCorner Thank you for your generosity. I have decided to rent skates at my club where I practice. At the moment I need to save up money for new boots from Edea, and blades from either JW or MK. Due to my own blades were already mal-shaved. My offer still stands though, for your guidance. Once I have the proper equipment. I do have questions about boot screws placement and much more!

Hi Matt, I'm a fan of your channel. It's hard to find an experienced tech like yourself. I understand you helped a lot of elite / high level skaters. Just wondering if you have mid level skaters come in for help? This video is particularly interesting and helpful. I believe many skaters have issues with blade mounting and not realize it. I myself have little pronation on the left foot and my tech adjusts the blade slightly off center. As you help mid level skaters with similar issues like this, it will greatly appreciated if you can post videos. Or if you would post videos for aspiring skaters just got into boot- blade combo on what to look for, how to mount properly, sharpening properly, how to make adjustments after temp mount, etc. Great advice and knowledge for skaters and technicians alike. Thank you so much!!

I actually work with more mid level skaters than high. Much more of them out there! I will absolutely do a mid level video in the future. The pronation issue could be the mount or something as simple as an arch support. The type of skate also plays a factor. Mid level up to doubles I like the Jackson Debut paired with a Matrix Legacy. I actually have a skater doing double axle and triple everything in that boot and at $449 is much easier on the wallet then if you go with an Ice Fly or Aura. Thank you for the kind words. Look for a mid level video coming soon!

Thank you so much for this video! Tomorrow I will get my Ice Fly Edea with Coronation Ace only with the adjustable screws (since the rink is far from the tech guy I have to go test them moving the blade myself) 😢 Would I be able to attend a 1hs class with only the adjustable screws? Or should I just cancel them until I get all screws placed in? 😢

Matt, FYI the screw type for Edea boots are called high-low thread screws. These are specialty screws for soft materials.

I had exactly the same problem with blade mounted off center, I thought it was new boot.. ended up with painful navicular bone abscess and spent 4 weeks in recovery. Also hockey store ruined my blade when sharpening.

Last year, I was able to stabilise my spins really well. Since changing boots, no matter how hard I try, nothing’s working. After inspecting my boots for a 1000th time, I realise on my left boot, it’s not holding my foot in the right direction. Because its narrow at the tip (despite it being ‘wide’), my foot is positioned more so towards the left. It’s exhausting and devastating for me because I’ve been having to erase years of progress and start from scratch. Would you recommend that my blade is remounted pointing out? Inside at the heel, outside at the toe box.

Hey just wondering if the skate has leather soles you would have to fill those holes if they are off center when moving the blade? If they’re not too off would you just rescrew the nail into the same hole? I have the same issue and don’t know how to fix it we also don’t have skate techs here. Thanks!

That was awesome. Can I send you pics of my boots and blades? Ice Fly Gold Seal. I ordered from a roller skating store in Italy during lockdown and they mounted with all the holes and really messed up the sharpening. 😞

To find center on Edeas you need to actually measure the whole outer diameter of the boot with calipers at it's widest point, and divide that number by half. You don't just eyeball it like in this video. On my 285 and 290 pairs they measured about 108mm, so it would be 54mm for the center, then make a line based on that, I guess ideally with a laser level or something. But you want that center point figured out, as on both my pairs true center was actually 4-5mm towards the outside edge of the seam stitching. I did find this video helpful though, as it got the gears turning and I contacted the last tech who retired who mounted my old blades and found out this info, and also found the info matched a technical bulletin from SkatesUS about mounting roller frames to Edea with the same advice, down to the part where true center can often be 4-5mm outside of the stitching. With foot pain, too, on my newest pair of Edeas where initially I had the mount done by another tech before DIYing it, it is interesting. I don't think I have any pronation or supination issues, but the tech I had mount based on wrong math using the sole of the skate mounted the blades very inward, and I had a lot of pain from that. With the blades being truly centered and mounted towards the outside like my first pair, no pain again. Interestingly on my box of MK Professional blades they said to mount around the second toe as the ideal spot, which I found weird advice. However, I have a Greek foot, so the second toe is longer than the big toe, and I'm guessing puts more force out in jumps/etc compared to most people. So I think mounting at the third toe and also coincidentally more true to center matches the Greek foot well, so it might be something to consider.

My left foot blade is mounted a little too inside I think… I’ve noticed I’m having a hard time not scraping the toe pick anytime I do anything with my left inside edge whether it’s spinning, slaloms, etc… I do pronate a bit but maybe centering it might be best? The right foot blade is more centered and I have no problems with the right foot 🤷‍♀️

Definitely need to experiment and move it more outside. Some skaters/coaches/techs try to offset pronation by moving the blade inwards but I like to try to fix the problem from the inside of the boot. More often than not an insole will bring your foot back to neutral. No need to move the blade off center.

I just wish the ice hockey industry made boots where you can adjust the blade position. I supinate with most boots yet after going to 5 top end skate shops, no-one has a simple solution. I tell one of them I need the blades slightly further to the outside and he tells me it's an ankle strength issue. Each ankle can hold my entire weight when I deliberately supinate so I have no strength issue, but I just can't get this through to some of them. They seem to have this one boot is right for everyone mentality. Strange thing is, the blades on most ice hockey skates seem to be biased more towards the inside, and the blade holders clearly have more width on the outer side, thus putting the blade towards the inner side. Perhaps this is because a lot more people pronate, rather than supinate like me. I'm in Australia and my experience has been most of the shop attendants are just hockey players who work there. I wish there was more technical understanding here, like what you have.

Easy fix. Either fix the supination from the inside of the boot or take the rivets out of one side and put a wedge in there.
@Mancavedweller1

@@RedmondsCorner Thanks very much for the reply and the information. However, shimming is not so straight forward, as you have different widths and also different heights on the front and rear parts of the blade holder. When tilting along one side of the front part of the blade holder, the rear part (i.e. on both sides) wants to lift away from the heel somewhat. If this is not allowed the blade holder will be twisted. So I need to find someone who is knowledgeable enough to do this properly. Alternatively I might get hold of some rivet dies and do the job myself (got some engineering capabilities and machinery so I'd make the rivet tool myself). After my experience with the "pro shops" here, I basically don't know who to go to. Wish your shop was here LOL.

@@Mancavedweller1 Yes. Not very straightforward but when we need to do this my team will experiment with different heights to find the right one that works.
